Abstract
This paper details the processes of project management, the effects on a company as well
as the issues experienced in the implementation of project management in organizations. Projects
can be defined as a group of set goals and targets that are assigned to a certain work team for
achievement within a certain period. Projects are not normal organization operation rather they
are set of operations which when combined achieve a specific task. The project management
processes discussed in this paper include project initiation, planning, execution, project
monitoring and control and finally project termination closing. The paper will report the research
issues affecting the implementation of projects and also come up with recommendations on how
to counter these. Also, it will address some of the key trends that are being experienced with
regards to project management as well as the ways through, which the same trends have
managed in shaping the industry.

Executive Summary
We analyze the key processes of managing projects to gain more knowledge of what
project management entails. In analyzing project management, we take a look at project
management in one of the culturally unique organizations, Zappos. We examine what project
management in this company is and how employees make it work. In discussing Zappos, we get
to look at a unique way of the project management adopted by the company. We analyze its
effects on the employees and how well they adapted to it.
Introduction
Project management is characterized by two components, temporality, and uniqueness.
Every project is unique since it does not take up the normal functionality of everyday operations.
Project management is designed for a specific task or goal that is different from the overall goal
of an organization but aligns with the company’s needs and requirements. Project management
operate under a timeline hence the tasks and goals set for a project team have to be achieved
within the set time limit for the project to be effective. Management of a project, therefore,
includes different operations, skills, and abilities being combined to operate smoothly towards
achieving a set goal (Turner, 2004). On the same note, a project manager should also be on the
look for all the necessary elements and additions that can be of great value to the project. This
entails that the manager should be in a position of conducting researches as a way of being
updated with the latest trends that are related to project management.
Overview and History of Project Management
Project management has five phases. The first project management phase is the initiation
process or the conception process. This process is where an idea for a project is born. When
someone comes up with an idea for a project they have to analyze whether the project is

beneficial to the organization and whether it is in line with the organization’s goals. This stage
involves vetting where a team decides whether the project is relevant, realistic and
accomplishable (Kerzner, 2017).
The planning process requires putting the project down in writing and outlining what
needs to be done. This phase of project management requires a team to discuss the project in
details and come up with a schedule, calculate a budget and determine all the resources they will
need o complete the project. In the executing phase tasks and resources are distributed to the
project team members as they are updated on all the necessary details concerning the project.
The monitoring and control phase involves comparing the work progress of a project to
the outlined plan to decide whether the project is on track. This helps in determining whether
adjustments need to be made in the schedule to keep the project on track. Other adjustments can
be made regarding resources necessary. Project managers at this phase must do whatever they
deem necessary to control the project and have it running accordingly. The closing of a project is
marked by the completion of the project tasks and approval of the work. There is a need for an
evaluation at this point to highlight the success of the project (Turner, 2008).
Pros and Cons
There are several advantages of project management including the fact that the executives
in an organization can give feedback throughout the project helping the project manager know
what to improve on and what is on the right track. Project management also leads to
cohesiveness since team members are required to work together to achieve a common goal.
Completion of projects promptly leads to increased efficiency since services are efficiently
delivered. This, in turn, affects the quality and quantity of products and services offered by an
organization (Kerzner, 2017).
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
6
Some of the disadvantages or project management is that the can be costly to effect
because a lot of resources and work has to be put in for effective and timely completion. The
micromanagement in project management can be a disadvantage as it doesn’t give room for
innovativeness and new ideas which in turn may lead to employee demotivation and
dissatisfaction. Group thinking in project management doesn’t promote individuality which leads
to members not developing individual ways of performing tasks. In the event of
miscommunication in one phase of the project, I may affect all the other phases leading to
project failure (Kerzner, 2017).
Case Study Review
Zappos is one of the organizations with a unique organizational culture hence exploring
their project management was ideal. We discuss one of Zappos software called Ask Zappos and
how this project was completed within 12 weeks. This project by Zappos adopted a method
called one-week sprints which involved completing project milestones weekly. This means that
tasks were divided into the set weeks and every week employees had to complete a task. The
importance of dividing tasks into phases is that it helps in monitoring the progress that has been
made up to a certain level. Also, it gives the team time to reflect on the far the project has
reached, and if there are any adjustments which are needed, they can be made as soon as possible
before the next stage is commenced. At the beginning of each week an initial meeting had to
occur, and within the week several scrum meetings would be held. Scrum meetings were done
for each member to discuss their progress and the challenges they are facing as well as what they
have achieved so far (Schwaber, 2004). The end of the week had to reflect a conclusive
achievement of each task.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
7
Projects require proper initial planning to work effectively. Without project management,
it is impossible for a project to be completed successfully; hence each phase of project
management is important. Zappos success in its project, Ask Zappos, was supported by a unique
project management model that fitted the organization. The method used was agile and promoted
urgency and innovation leading to a very successful project. Moreover, before the planning
phase is commenced, proper and detailed research must be conducted to ensure that the project
being undertaken will serve the intended purpose. This may take time and resources since if
rushed through, the information gathered may be corrupted and end up not serving the intended
purpose.
Trends in Project Management
Change is one of those things, which is always constant in the world that we live in
today. Therefore, to move forward with ease, human beings must be able to embrace change as
one of the essential elements of survival. Embracing change results in new ways of doing things,
which may prove to be more reliable than the traditional ways that most individuals may be used
to (Doppelt, 2017). A good project manager should have the ability to identify any area that
requires change and address the same promptly. However, despite the positive impact that
embracing new trends and change may have, most organizations choose to stick to traditional
ways of performing things as a way or retaining the safe mode that they have already established.
To keep up with the ever-changing competition, various organizations around the world
always do whatever it takes to stay updated with the emerging trends and the competitive nature
that keeps on evolving in many different ways. According to The Six Trends of Project
Management in 2017 | TaskReports (2018), some changes have occurred in the project
management sector that all stakeholders need to take a keen consideration of. Embracing change
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
8
is one of the ways through which organizations such as Zappos can be able to keep up with the
competitive environment that is always changing.
One of the trends that Zappos can adopt is the use of machine learning in project
management. With the use of machines, it can be easy to monitor the progress of a given project
and give a rough estimation of when the said project is likely to be completed. Most people who
are tasked with the duty of completing a project or given phases of a project may fail to meet the
recommended deadline according to the initial agreement. With the emergence of machines that
are equipped with the ability to learn, project managers can easily predict and be in apposition of
determining who is best fit to manage a project and the earliest date that it is likely to be
completed. This is done through the use of special algorithms, which are used to determine how
soon the completion date can be achieved. Through adopting this new trend, Zappos can among
other things guarantee the completion of projects on time, as well as identify the most reliable
crop of staff members to assign tasks that are of extreme importance.
The other emerging trend that Zappos can embrace is the use of customized project
management systems. With the discovery of new forms of technology, the task of building
unique software has been made easier and quicker (The Six Trends of Project Management in
2017 | Task Reports, 2018). With this new wave of technology, companies are provided with a
platform where they can closely monitor the progress of their project as well as improve the level
of efficiency while reducing the cost regarding labor that would have been hired to oversee the
project. Customizing of the projects will also make it easier for the managers to follow all that is
happening keenly and effect any necessary changes that may be required. By doing this, little
time is spent dwelling on the less important matters and instead, focused on the more appropriate
and fulfilling issues that will be of greater value to the project. By adopting this change, Zappos

can hit a new level of efficiency and productivity that the organization has never witnessed
before. Additionally, this trend will play a crucial role in propelling the organization above
others in the same industry.
