INSTRUCTIONS: You are to research an important American popular music artist from the 1990’s or later. This needs to be an established artist who has major hits (Top Ten Billboard), and/or Grammy nominations/wins, etc. This artist should be on such a level to have historical significance. Essay (700-800 words): Elements of the artist you need to write about are: A. What are the cultural elements at the core of the genre tradition? B. Who are the historical influences? Who are the artists who cultivated this music?C. What is the instrumentation? Is this common or uncommon?D. Research and write about at least two other artists who are predecessors to this artist? E. What has lead to the success of this artist?G. Who is the audience? Age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status?F. Has this artist influenced other artists? If so who and how?G. How does this music function socially?H. How is technology important to this artist? REQUIREMENTS: • The essay should be submitted through SAKAI as an attached word document.• Length between 700-800 words, doubled-spaced, using Times New Roman, Helvetica orArial font size 12.
