At the age of forty-one, I am returning to school and having to think of myself
as what my French textbook calls “a true debutant.” After paying my tuition, I
was issued a student ID, which allows me a discounted entry fee at movie
theaters, puppet shows, and Festyland, a far-flung amusement park that
advertises with billboards picturing a cartoon stegosaurus sitting in a canoe
and eating what appears to be a ham sandwich.
I’ve moved to Paris in order to learn the language. My school is the Alliance
Française, and on the first day of class, I arrived early, watching as the
returning students greeted one another in the school lobby. Vacations were
recounted, and questions were raised concerning mutual friends with names
like Kang and Vlatnya. Regardless of their nationalities, everyone spoke what
sounded to me like excellent French. Some accents were better than others,
but the students exhibited an ease and confidence I found intimidating. As an
added discomfort, they were all young, attractive, and well dressed, causing
me to feel not unlike Pa Kettle trapped backstage after a fashion show.
I remind myself that I am now a full-grown man. No one will ever again card
me for a drink or demand that I weave a floor mat out of newspapers. At my
age, a reasonable person should have completed his sentence in the prison of
the nervous and the insecure–isn’t that the great promise of adulthood? I can’t
help but think that, somewhere along the way, I made a wrong turn. My fears
have not vanished. Rather, they have seasoned and multiplied with age. I am
now twice as frightened as I was when, at the age of twenty, I allowed a failed
nursing student to inject me with a horse tranquilizer, and eight times more
anxious than I was the day my kindergarten teacher pried my fingers off my
mother’s ankle and led me screaming toward my desk. “You’ll get used to it,”
the woman had said.
I’m still waiting.
The first day of class was nerve-racking, because I knew I’d be expected to
perform. That’s the way they do it here–everyone into the language pool, sink
or swim. The teacher marched in, deeply tanned from a recent vacation, and
rattled off a series of administrative announcements. I’ve spent some time in
Normandy, and I took a monthlong French class last summer in New York.
I’m not completely in the dark, yet I understood only half of what this teacher
was saying.
“If you have not meismslsxp by this time, you should not be in this room. Has
everybody apzkiubjxow? Everyone? Good, we shall proceed.” She spread out
her lesson plan and sighed, saying, “All right, then, who knows the alphabet?”
It was startling, because a) I hadn’t been asked that question in a while, and b)
I realized, while laughing, that I myself did not know the alphabet. They’re the
same letters, but they’re pronounced differently.
“Ahh.” The teacher went to the board and sketched the letter a. “Do we have
anyone in the room whose first name commences with an ahh?”
Two Polish Annas raised their hands, and the teacher instructed them to
present themselves, giving their names, nationalities, occupations, and a list of
things they liked and disliked in this world. The first Anna hailed from an
industrial town outside of Warsaw and had front teeth the size of tombstones.
She worked as a seamstress, enjoyed quiet times with friends, and hated the
mosquito.
“Oh, really,” the teacher said. “How very interesting. I thought that everyone
loved the mosquito, but here, in front of all the world, you claim to detest him.
How is it that we’ve been blessed with someone as unique and original as you?
Tell us, please.”
The seamstress did not understand what was being said, but she knew that
this was an occasion for shame. Her rabbity mouth huffed for breath, and she
stared down at her lap as though the appropriate comeback were stitched
somewhere alongside the zipper of her slacks.
The second Anna learned from the first and claimed to love sunshine and
detest lies. It sounded like a translation of one of those Playmate of the Month
data sheets, the answers always written in the same loopy handwriting: “Turnons: Mom’s famous five-alarm chili! Turnoffs: Insincerity and guys who come
on too strong!!!”

Journal: Importance of Analysis
Who do you think your audience will be in your critical analysis essay? Describe this audience, and
explain how they would benefit from any insights produced from your analysis of your selected article.
I believe the audience of my critical analysis will be like the audience of David Sedaris, a student adult
who speaks fluently English but struggles with learning other certain cultures. Audience who read my
analysis will be influence to leave out their circle of comfort and explore other cultures, so that they can
understand the diversity in the world.
Why is analysis so important for your selected reading? How will it help your audience understand the
author’s goal in a clearer, more captivating way?
Analysis is important because every human being interpret or understand things differently. The author
David Sedaris, is very good with captivating or persuading the audience on learning other cultures. I
believe with my analysis, I will enforce a little more on how impactful it is to not quit on something you
are not familiar with. I would galvanize my audience to do something that is out of the box and pursue it
until it’s accomplished.
After re-reading your article and notes from Module 1, what do you believe is your goal in analyzing
your selected article? Will you provide additional context to help your audience understand the
importance of the author’s goal, or will you use your essay as an opportunity to persuade your audience
that the author’s goal is incorrect?
I believe my goal in analyzing my article is to agree alongside with the Author “David Sedaris”. I would
like to help support it or enhance it by giving my audience reasons on why they should not quit at
anything challenging in life. I would include some of his examples in the article that support my
persuasive attitude on defeating all odds. I would also include when the author finally understood his
teacher, which shows when you don’t give up, good things come with hard work, perseverance and
determination.
The author’s goal has changed after conducting an analytical reading because it has become
apparent that Sedaris used various elements of writing to communicate his message.
After conducting an active reading of the article, I have identified new key points that can be
used to support my claim. There are various instances where the author conveys a serious
message but in a humorous manner. For example, he says that after paying school fees, he
was given a student ID that he could use to receive discounts at the movie theaters, puppet
shows, and other places. In another instance, Sedaris says he was nervous and frightened
when he first entered the class. One wonders why a person aged forty-one should get nervous
even though it is their first experience. In other several occasions, Sedaris recounts his
personal experience a more humorous way.
My intended audience could be foreigners who are eager to learn a new language. These
people can either be teenagers or young adults but not children. Although this audience can
understand some of the facts and concepts presented in the essay, it can be problematic to
convince them to see the humor and sarcasm in the story. It is possible that some of them
might have undergone humiliation and problems while learning a new language. Therefore,
telling them the story might remind them of their previous negative experience rather than
being an informative session.
There are various goals that I wish to accomplish in my essay. One, I agree with the author
learning a new experience can be challenging. Humiliations may also hinder a person’s
ability to achieve their desires. Secondly, I will demonstrate that even though the author went
through a lot in his quest to learn French, he could not afford to miss a humorous narration.
There is proof to support my claim regarding the author’s use of humor in telling his story. I
can choose various scenarios where the author uses words or phrases that depict humor. I will
show why I consider such instances as evidence of humor in relation to the context of the
story. For instance, Sedaris says that he engaged in a conversation with another student, a sort
of conversation commonly overheard in a refugee camp. Comparing students to refugees
does not only show their suffering in class but also humorous.
Receiving a feedback regard my draft can be an important step in improving my argument.
Positive criticism can enhance my ideas and give suggestions on how to make my essay more
logical. Any feedback received can pinpoint some weakness associated with my writing, thus,
I can correct them. These suggestions can be integrated into my final project as I will keep
them in mind while writing the final essay. I believe my arguments can become strong,
logical, and well organized.
One of the revision strategies that can be substantial in my writing is peer evaluation. This
method of revision is efficient because a classmate can be able to identify mistakes that I
could not be able to see. They can give suggestions that could be helpful in improving the
essay. Feedbacks are essential in writing since they add value to the general organization of
the paper. Therefore, peer evaluation seems to be my most useful revision strategy.
As conflicts keep rising in the Middle East, there is one country amongst all of them has set a
mark. This country is Saudi Arabia. While other country powers have gone down, Saudi
Arabia has been modifying its strategies to make it more prosper and they also forged
alliances with other countries like Egypt, United States, and many others. Even though, their
king died recently and they had some revolts years ago, but they have not shown any sign of
weakness, and kept pushing forward in making themselves better. They are funding
government in Egypt and Jordan, fighting in Libya and promoting peace through their state
owned media outlets in Tunisia and other locations (Kirkpatrick D).
