Every year, Fortune magazine partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to
conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. This year 300+
firms participated in the survey. To pick the “100 Best Companies to Work For,”
Fortune used to use the following nine (9) standards to evaluate the companies:
Quality of management
Quality of products and services
Long-term investment value
Financial soundness
Responsibility to community and environment
Wise use of corporate assets
Global business knowledge
Ability to attract, develop, and retain talent
This year, Fortune and the Institute revised their methodology and now measure six
(6) components to evaluate the companies:
Leadership/Executive team effectiveness (number 1 above)
Maximizing human potential (number 9 above)
Financial growth
Value (numbers 4, 5, and 7 above)
Trust – the idea of people-focused programs and Great Place to Work
for All, in which employees report:
• high levels of trust
• credible and respectful leadership
• pride in the work
• camaraderie
The Institute also looks to see that employees consistently experience this great
workplace, regardless of who they are or what they do.
Each company is scored on the Institute’s analysis of:
anonymous employee responses to more than 50 survey questions
on its Trust Index Survey
company programs and practices, as measured by a Culture Audit

More than 315,000 employees provided feedback to determine the winners of the
2018 list. To be considered:
companies needed to have at least 1,000 employees
receive enough survey responses to achieve a 95% confidence level
with no more than a 5% margin of error
For the “final exam:”
1. Go to the following Web site to see Fortune’s 2018 list of “100 Best
Companies to Work For:” http://fortune.com/best-companies/list
? (Note: As you look through the list, click on some companies that are not
familiar to you and look through the company’s page for information on
such things as: company ranking for Best Company for Millennials to Work
For; company ranking for Best Bosses to Work For.)
2. From the list of the top 50 companies, choose a company (NOT Google,
Facebook, Wegmans), that interests you and review the related Fortune web
page and the company’s website.
3. Based on what you can learn from the Fortune Web page, the company’s Web
site, and the readings/discussions over the last few months, identify and
analyze why you think your company is the best company to work for based
on aspects of HRM practices (see the list of HRM practices below).
Content of material on which you will be graded:
? HRM practices/areas include: Culture, Recruitment, Training, Performance
Management, Employee Relations, Compensation, Benefits, and Diversity.
? Choose at least four (4) of the above HR areas and
Summarize the company’s practices
Relate the HRM practices to the company’s business strategy and
success (e.g., how is the practice implemented, used, incorporated,
developed, measured)
? References should be provided on the last page and follow APA or MLA format.
(APA format example: Coleman, (2005). “Diversity in Marymount Students: A
cross cultural perspective.” Journal of Cultural Management 22(3), 120-126.)
? You need to have at least five (5) references, of which three (3) should be from
written sources (no blogs), or contemporary business sources (e.g., Harvard
Business Review, Forbes, Money Magazine) written in the last two (2) years.

All articles/URLs must be turned in with the paper. You may scan or
photograph the articles.
Materials found on the company website count as one (1) reference (no
matter how many pages were used).
Interviewing a current/former employee or member of the HR team
may also be used in place of one (1) reference.
? Merely listing and/or copying items from your reference materials, especially
websites, will reduce your grade. You must analyze how the HRM elements
relate to the company’s strategy and success.
• That is, break the HR practices into their component parts to examine,
question, explore the information/ data
• so you can use/quote important information to build your paper and to
answer the “so, what?; why should I (Dr. Scanlon) care?”
? Given that this course examines HRM from the perspective of a manager who
wishes to effectively use his/her human resources and interact with HR
professionals rather than assuming you/the student wants to become an HR
professional, your paper must demonstrate that you have a working
knowledge of the HR practices you choose to write about not that you
are an HR specialist.
? The paper should be at least five (5) pages (1 page each for Intro/Conclusion
and 4 HR areas), but no longer than eight (8) pages.
• The length of the paper does not include your Reference page,
graphs, charts, attachments, or appendices.
