1.Describe the differences between small group communication and team communication.
(around 150 words)
Two interesting words may be derived from the word “communication.” These are “commune”
and “community.” As defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, to commune is to converse or
talk together with the possibility of profound intimacy. Community, on the other hand, is defined
by Merriam-Webster as a group of any size that shares something or some space in common.
As you explore communication in this course, these two words will be inherent to your study.
Consider the small groups currently in your life. For this course, you will be required to post on
the course blog as part of your grade. From the COM230 course homepage, click on Blog
located on the main navigation on the left. Select the blog entry Small Groups in My Life. You
will see the Add a Comment form. Enter a title in the Title entry blank. Then, in the Body textbox,
type up a list of your small groups and a brief description of how or why they are small
groups for you. You will come back to them to understand the differences between small group
communication and team communication.
In your textbook, communication is defined as “the process of acting on information” (p. 3).
Small group communication, however, is much more than acting on information. As noted in
Small group communication is communication among a small group of people who share a
common purpose, who feel a sense of belonging to the group, and who exert influence on one
another (p. 3)
Using this definition, it may be difficult to see how teams and small groups differ. In reality, all
teams are small groups, but not all small groups are teams. Teams have clearly defined goals,
roles, and rules for engagement to accomplish their purposes. Conversely, small groups do not
need to be as organized in their communication. Small groups have more generalized goals and
roles with evolving rules and methods to accomplish a purpose.
Review the small groups you wrote about in your blog. Given this new information about
small groups and teams, does your list include groups, teams, or both? Feel free to add
another comment to the blog to clarify if your groups are teams, small groups, or both! As you
will read further in Chapter 1, “Introducing Group and Team Principle and Practices,” and in
subsequent lessons, small groups and teams are not drastically different, but can require
contrasting communication approaches. Understanding the differences between the circles of
people in your life is important because it provides a context for you to take your communication
competence to a new level!
2. Lesson 1 Group Discussion Thread Assignment
The group discussion thread allows you to participate in asynchronous discussion with your
peers. The Discussions link is located on the left side of the course homepage. Click on the link
and select, “Lesson 1 Group Discussion.”
For this assignment, you will respond to a discussion prompt, respond to another student’s post,
and respond to a question asked you by another student (15 points total, 5 points for each
response). The purpose of this group discussion is to practice the nine core small group
communication competencies through discussion on a specific prompt.
In this assignment, you are required to:
1) Write a post using the discussion questions below. (200 words)
To begin, read the case study on page 28 of your textbook by Beebe and Masterson. In
your post, clearly provide your name and answer the following questions:
1. What are two of the key problems this group is having and why?
2. Based on the discussion of virtual groups and teams on pages 2125, what is one
activity the group could do to more effectively use the Internet or other technology to
make progress and why?
2) Respond to another students post by asking a follow-up question. (100 words)
Students initial post (Response to this one)
The Battle of Appomattox Group was having a combination of problems. As some of the
members of the group didn’t know the assignment they clearly lacked a clear goal. They also
lacked unified commitment as only two members worked on the assignment. The group was
crippled by their lack of a collaborative climate; their choice of email as their method of
communication was probably the worst of their options. A video conference would be the best
option as it allows for verbal and nonverbal communication; however, telephone conferences
would also have worked. The quick and effortless ability to communicate verbally is very
important in small groups and emails are easy to, and often get ignored.
3) Respond to a question asked of you by the instructor or another student. (150 words)
do not do it right now, please wait until I upload and remind you.
