As a student in UMUC’s MBA program, you have been acquiring
the knowledge and developing the skills to assume leadership
responsibilities in today’s complex, multinational, and
multicultural business environment. This requires you to have a
broad array of specialized knowledge as well as a deep
understanding of your own leadership proficiency and potential.
So far in your program you have had an opportunity to do the
following:
•
Identify gaps in some of the core knowledge areas. It will be
important to reduce or eliminate these gaps given your
chosen career aspirations.
•
Identify specific leadership skills that you wish to develop
further.
•
Create, monitor, share, and revise both long- and short-term
career goals.
•
Create and revise a Leadership Development Plan (LDP) that
captures the specific actions you choose to advance your
knowledge and skills, your goals and priorities, and your
major accomplishments during this academic journey.
These are things you will continue to work on in this course and
throughout the rest of this program.
In this course, your specific focus will be on making decisions
that are legal and ethical, determining the best legal and
organization structure for a business, and addressing legal,
ethical, and cultural issues involved in managing a global
business enterprise. In addition, you will assess your global
mindset by completing the Global Attitude Protocol (GAP)
questionnaire at the beginning of the course and then reflecting
upon your global awareness growth at the end of the course.
You will complete Steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 by the end of Week 1. You
will then complete the remaining steps at the end of the course.
Return to complete Step 5 in Week 10.
By completing this project, you will show that you can assess
and develop your personal leadership skills, enhance your
personal leadership portfolio, and further develop your personal
leadership brand. This project also reinforces the foundational
student competencies identified by UMUC’s Graduate School
including written communication and critical thinking.
Get started in Step 1: “Career Goals.”
When you submit your project, your work will be evaluated using
the competencies listed below. You can use the list below to
self-check your work before submission.
•
2.1: Identify and clearly explain the issue, question, or
problem under critical consideration.
•
2.2: Locate and access sufficient information to investigate
the issue or problem.
•
2.3: Evaluate the information in a logical and organized
manner to determine its value and relevance to the problem.
•
2.4: Consider and analyze information in context to the issue
or problem.
•
2.5: Develop well-reasoned ideas, conclusions or decisions,
checking them against relevant criteria and benchmarks.
•
5.3: Create, implement, and evaluate a personal leadership
development plan.
Step 1: Ethical Analysis
The ethical aspects of King’s situation seem complex, and you
realize that you need a structured way to think through the
various possibilities and their implications. You know that there
are many different schools of ethical thought and a variety of
frameworks or approaches for analyzing ethical problems, but
you decide that the best approach to this particular situation
is Badaracco’s Right vs. Right Framework.
Work through the Badaracco ethical analysis, considering the
various options for action and the winners and losers for each
option. What are your recommendations for the best ethical
course of action?
When you’ve finished analyzing the ethical aspects of this case,
continue to the next step, in which you’ll consider any legal
issues that could affect your decisions.
Step 2: Legal Analysis
In addition to the ethical aspects of King’s situation, there may
be legal implications that the human resources department
needs to account for before moving forward with any plan of
action. You realize that you need to review any relevant
information about fraud that might affect what could or should
be done about King, including employment at will.
Now that you’ve worked through possible legal implications and
arrived at a recommended course of action for Friendly Digits’s
HR department, it’s time to present your analyses,
recommendations, and action plan in a memo to Mindy Wu, the
director of HR.
Step 3: Write Your Memo
First, review how to write a memo. Once you have a sense of
memos in general, use your outline and research notes to
prepare your memo. Be sure to meet the following requirements:
•
Using the Badaracco framework and your legal analysis,
prepare a memo for HR.
•
Format your memo following the library’s example. You
must also include APA-formatted in-text citations and an
APA-formatted reference list (do not format the body of the
memo using APA style, just the reference list).
See references and citations for details.
•
Include a specific recommendation on what actions, if any,
HR should take based on your analysis and conclusions.
•
The memo should be no more than 10 pages (double
spaced, 12-point font; the reference list does not count
towards page limit).
•
Title your file using this protocol: yourlastname_King_date.
Step 4: Submit Your Memo
Submit your memo to the Embellished Résumé folder by the end
of Week 5.
Before you submit your assignment, review the competencies
below, which your instructor will use to evaluate your work. A
good practice would be to use each competency as a self-check
to confirm you have incorporated all of them in your work.
•
1.4: Tailor communications to the audience.
•
1.6: Follow conventions of Standard Written English.
•
2.5: Develop well-reasoned ideas, conclusions or decisions,
checking them against relevant criteria and benchmarks.
•
5.1: Develop constructive resolutions for ethical dilemmas
based on application of ethical theories, principles, and
models.
•
9.3: Apply the principles of employment law for ethical
practices and risk mitigation.

If you look into the deliverable for Project 3 and the instructions provided in
the project steps, you will glean that we are not going to be looking for an
opinion. We will be looking for a thoughtful and considered analysis and
conclusion of a very complicated situation, and the approach must be

grounded in a solid foundation of ethical theory/framework. You will recall because I know you were hanging on my every word – that we grade the
paper, not the student, and that evidence of learning encompasses both
comprehension and application.
We covered some of the basic ethical frameworks in last month’s residential (I
have attached the slide deck again just in case) and I would strongly suggest
you start to spend some quality time with the readings in Project Two step 7
(Ethical Decision Making) and Project Three Step 1 (Badaracco’s Right-v-Right
Framework). There is a temptation to take a little break in these weeks of the
course as it looks like just one easy paper has to be submitted. It is not that
easy of a paper.
The expectation is that you will be referencing them (and other sources) in
support of your analysis, assertions, and recommendations in the subject case
for the Project 3 paper. And of course the expectation is that your assignment
will be submitted when it is due. The Badaracco link contains both a video and
a transcript of a lecture; whether or not you watch the video (my Mac did not
“like” the flashplayer for some reason) you should read the transcript – several
times.
Since it is a lecture it is not a good skim-read candidate; I read it three times
since the course started, and I have used it before. We used this video lecture
in our corporate Leadership Development program – it is an excellent practical
foundation for ethical decision-making. Badaracco’s Big Wow that ethical
decisions are generally choices between right and right (no right and wrong) is
another way of expression my guidance that you are going to choose who gets
hurt.
