Giant Food Landover is an American supermarket chain with 169 stores located all around the United
States. Most Online reviews regarding Giant Food are good and pleasant. As people tend to enjoy
shopping there and love the products provided. In addition, people praise the produce section and the
seafood section. However, a yelp reviewer says that the seafood counter isn’t always open. New Grand
Mart is an international and Korean supermarket chain based in the DMV area. New Grand Mart’s
reviews are not the best, as most people might be discouraged be the outside appearance of the grocery
store. In addition, most reviewers claim the grocery stores prices are bit hight for the products provided at
the store. However, a large number of people praise New Grand Mart for providing foreign products that
are only available at New Grand Mart. Both stores have a targeted demographic that determines their
products which determines customer’s needs and desires.

It’s 9:30 in the morning of April 12th, and I’m parked outside of Giants Supermarket. There
seems to be quite few people inside the store, based on the number of cars. The majority of cars
in the parking lot were considered to be luxury cars, as they ranged from Chryslers to Rang
Rovers. The store seems to have seen better days, but the store’s location is quite exquisite and
convenient due to the many residential buildings in the area. Thus, the store was considerably
crowded and the store itself is considered to be very large and sizable. I started to wander around
the store to observe and then I proceeded to take note on the details that I found interesting.
Firstly, I started to focus on the store’s organizing system and I found it to be very accessible and
easy to understand. As there were signs informing customers about what each aisle possesses and
where to find certain items without asking an employee at the store. This is an efficient way to
save time and effort on the consumer’s behalf. These signs also included special offers and
discounts on produce and certain boxed item. This is also an efficient way to persuade consumers
to purchase an item or two and benefit the store financially. I also realized that Giant keeps their
seafood products at the back of the store to avoid the spreading of unpleasant smells. Secondly, I
started to observe the products themselves, as most of the products provided at Giants are
considered to be common in an American supermarket such as chips, dairy products, proteins,
and condiments. For example, chips like Pringles, Tostitos, and Cheetos are typically found in
American supermarket and would be considered unusual if they weren’t. Lastly, I reflected upon
step two of the common assignment and started to observe people’s ethnicity and race, as this
Giant is located in a very diverse area. First of all, I observed the people who were working at
that time, and the majority were either African American or middle-aged white people. As these
two races are the majority in this specific area code. However, the people who were grocery
shopping were equally diverse, as I couldn’t point out a specific race that was overwhelmingly

larger than another race. For instance, I observed different ethnicities at that time such as White,
African American, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern.
It’s about 10:55 on the morning of April 12th, I am parked outside of Grand Mart in Falls
Church, Virginia. Judging by the cars in the parking lot and the lack of people walking in, the
store seems to be fairly empty. Nevertheless, there was a couple of cars parked outside and they
were luxury cars but the were older models. From the outside the store seems have been there for
quite some time, as the store looks a bit old fashioned and timeworn. On the other hand, the
store’s locations is not as convenient as Giant’s location because the store is not surrounded by
residential buildings or houses, it is just off a Route-50 exit and that may be hard to find for
certain people. However, this particular Grand Mart is not the largest but compared to other
international supermarket chains it is one of the best and reasonable. I started to wander around
the store to observe and then I proceeded to take note on the details that I found interesting.
Firstly, the store’s organization was not bad but it could’ve been better because most of boxed
products were just piled up together in no specific order. On the other hand, every aisle had a
sign hanging from the ceiling to guide the shoppers to what they came to purchase. Secondly,
Grand Mart is an international supermarket. Thus, this explains the variety of foreign and
international products from all around the world. For example, products ranging from snacks to
meat and dairy products, as these particular products won’t be available at typical American
supermarket. Lastly, I reflected upon step two of the common assignment and started to observe
people’s ethnicity and race, as Falls Church is considered to be a very diverse area. The store
was very racially diverse but most of the shoppers were Latin American and most of the
employees were Asian American.
