Structural unemployment is the unemployment of workers due to advancements in
technology that replace workers that are not necessary for the business anymore. With new
technology that can replace these workers, there are often times great outcomes but leaves
these workers out of a job with useless skills. Throughout history, there have been
extraordinary advancements in technology which have replaced workers with robots, artificial
intelligence, and other mechanical devices which put humans out of paying jobs. Employers
turn to technology due to lower labor costs and more efficient production output.
Structural unemployment is often caused by advancement in technology which replaces
workers with robots, leaving them to retrain for new skills and positions.
These workers must get training in computer operations if they want to keep working in the
same industry. They learn how to manage the robots doing the work they used to do. (Amadeo)
Structural changes may cause temporary to long-term unemployment because of lack of skill
until they are able to retrain for new jobs. There may be creation of new jobs, but they will
most likely go to those who are more skilled and educated.
Artificial intelligence is enabling computers to think and act as humans do. Artificial intelligence
has become extremely widespread throughout the past 30 years.
From the 1990s to present day, millions of robots have taken over jobs in the United
States and we predict that the number will continue to increase. Because of the capability to
change these robots to perform any task makes it more efficient for companies to use, rather
than workers who need training and adjustment when given unfamiliar tasks.
Some examples of workers who have been replaced by machines or robots are cashiers,
bowling alley pin setters, toll collectors, factory workers, as well as cab drivers. The example of
self-driven cars has been fairly recent but has stirred some controversy due to safety reasons.
Although having a car that can drive itself may seem more efficient and less stressful than
driving a car yourself, this will put millions of cab drivers and truck drivers out of business, as
well as putting cab companies such as Uber and Lyft out of business. Mining giant Rio Tinto
already uses 45 240-ton driverless trucks to move iron ore in two Australian mines, saying it is
cheaper and safer than using human drivers. (Solon). Google, Uber, and Tesla have been testing
the driverless car, however, on March 23, 2018, Teslas Model X got into a fatal accident, killing
the driver; this is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board as to if it was
due to the cars autopilot function. This happened after another incident in Arizona involving a
self-driving Uber vehicle that was destroyed in the accident and killed a pedestrian nearby.
While there are many advantages of having robots, machines, and artificial intelligence
replacing humans for many occupations, safety must be the first priority to the businesses who
want to create these machines, as well as consider if it a necessity in our society and economy.
There are some jobs where humans are necessary for safety precautions such as operating a
vehicle in case of a machine malfunction. Businesses must put caution and extreme testing into
this technology before exposing it to the world. They should greatly consider if it is worth
putting workers out of jobs in replacement for these robots.
A question often asked is What will cause structural unemployment to decrease?
Some possibilities that may help drop structural unemployment is creating assistance for job
searches that are appropriate for the worker, programs which can train workers in specified
fields in which can help them search for other jobs, etc. By contrast, if unemployment is due to
lack of demand, the answer is to simply create more demand (Baker). However, retraining a
worker to work in a different industry is even more costly.
