First assignment: Synthesis essay
Explore the differences between the official form of government and the actual form of
government in power for a country of your choice ( choose any country) . The Synthesis
Paper will analyze opposing viewpoints on this topic. Both sides of the issue will be
examined.
Synthesis writing is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. In an academic
synthesis, you make explicit the relationships that you have inferred among separate sources.
Go beyond summary to make judgments – judgments based, of course, on critical reading of
the sources. Go beyond the critique of individual sources to determine the relationship
among them. 1100 words, APA format.
Second assignment: Position Essay
Take a position on what form of government is best for its citizens. Explain what criteria you
are using to determine the best form of government (e.g. ensuring rights, wellbeing, security,
greatest good for the greatest number, etc). Provide specific examples of historical and/or
current governments that match and explain how the citizens prosper because of this form of
government.
This paper will choose one side of the issue and analyze it with a specific focus using critical
thinking skills. The readings and research will be used as evidence to develop the position.
Position writing presents an arguable opinion about an issue. The goal of a position paper is
to convince the audience that an opinion is valid. Ideas need to be carefully examined in
choosing a topic, developing the argument, and organizing the paper. It is very important to
address all sides of the issue and present the position in a manner that is easy for the
audience to understand. Take one side of the argument. It is important to support the
argument with evidence to ensure the validity of the claims, as well as to address the
counterclaims. 1100 words, APA format.
First assignment: Research Paper
Propose a solution to a geopolitical injustice ( I want you to talk about the Conflict in Syria
and ISIS problem in Syria) . The solution can take one side of the issue or provide a
compromise. This paper should have three main parts:
•
•
•
Inherency: Demonstrate the need for a comprehensive reform. Explain the various
problems that are directly related to the geopolitical injustice to establish that the status
quo is a problem that merits addressing.
Plan: Present the solution you are proposing in detail. You will need to account for issues
of Actor (who should take action), Mandates (what the actor should do), Funding (how
much will the plan cost and how the actor will pay for it) and Enforcement (how the
actor will guarantee the mandates will actually happen).
Advantages: Treated as main points, explain the benefits of your proposed plan. A good
structure would be to describe the status quo before the plan, explain how the plan
would improve the status quo, and then enumerate and detail the good consequences of
the plan.
The purpose of the Research Paper is to develop an argument on your topic and to provide
persuasive support for your thesis using strong reasons and clear evidence through specific
examples. Sources examined and critiqued in the Annotated Bibliography should be
incorporated into your paper as you develop your formal, well-written, persuasive
argument. The Research Paper should follow formal grammatical conventions and style.
1850 words, APA format.
A research paper is an original argument where the student poses a research question,
gathers materials (designing interview questions, observing and taking notes, designing
questionnaires, critical analysis of readings and sources), focuses the research, shapes the
argument, and frames the materials in relation to the larger themes developed in the course.
Second assignment: Annotated Bibliography
This provides the research foundation for the research paper. The sources in your papers plus
some more make up the Annotated Bibliography. The purpose of the Annotated
Bibliography is to allow you to read carefully and critically, rather than simply to collect
information about your topic. This assignment is an instrument to help formulate a strong
argument based on a critique of each of your sources. Each annotation should include in one
paragraph:
•
a summary,
•
•
an evaluation of the text,
a reflection on its usefulness to your own research.
Your annotated bibliography should include a minimum of 8 sources. Credible sources
should be drawn from but not limited to: books, peer reviewed journals, periodicals, and
newspaper articles.
An Annotated Bibliography is a list of sources with annotations, listed in alphabetical order.
An annotation is a one or two paragraph summary and/or analysis of a source. This type of
bibliography will help guide the student’s research and prepare them for the research essay
with a critical evaluation of the sources.
Recommended length: 4 pages, double-spaced in 12pt font. APA format.
