Phase 2.0:
Frame Insights
BUS 480: Strategic Management and
Design Thinking for the Next Economy
Spring 2018
WHAT IS AN INSIGHT?
An insight is the act of “seeing into” a situation or
understanding the “inner nature” of what we observe.
It is our learning from an observation through our
interpretation by asking WHY?
An insight captures and encapsulates our POINT OF VIEW
(PoV)
The most useful insights are NON-OBVIOUS and SUPRISING!
Phase 2.0 Frame Insights
OBSERVATIONS TO INSIGHTS:
In this phase you will systematically think through all the observations from the interviews with
your study subject and extract valuable insights.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Gather observations and describe them (interview notes, photos, facts and other results
from your primary and secondary research)
In your team critique question and explore why these observations are happening.
Establish your PoV (your interpretation of observations). Document all “insights” and
choose the most reasonable ones. THIS SHOULD RESULT IN AT LEAST 8-10 INSIGHTS (if you
have fewer than 8, schedule follow-on interviews with your subject).
Describe each insight by writing a concise and objective statement for each one. These
should be written as general statements since they are higher-level learnings from specific
observations.
Organize your insights create a table or .xlxs spreadsheet that lists OBSERVATIONS in one
column and INSIGHTS in the next column. NOTE: one observation might lead to many
insights!
Discuss and refine by sharing your spreadsheet or table in team critique.
Insight Sorting
This method helps you identify relationships among your insights and cluster them to find useful
patterns. Steps #1 and #2 you’ll do on your own.
1. Gather your 2-3 sentence insight statements and write them on cards or post-its.
2. Create an initial cluster by looking for similarities and differences between your insight statements.
Think about the logic you’re using to create the clusters. NOTE: one logic might be how similar insights
are. Another logic could be the emotional content for example, hopes and fears, or activities.
3. Re-cluster until you reach a stable clustering pattern, one that you are comfortable in presenting to
your team. NOTE: a stable clustering is one that stands on logic that you can explain.
4. Define the clusters by giving them a short title based on their characteristics. For example: “Hopes
and Fears about finding a professional position.”
5. Share your final clusters with your team. Get feedback: Are your insight clusters comprehensive
enough to holistically address the project? Are there obvious gaps that need to be filled? Are the
clusters defined well enough to generate design principles?
Refine your Point of View
Refine your initial PoV. How has it become more clear and focused?
My user ___(Name and description)______ needs a way to ___(describe user’s needs)___ because (or circle one:
but…or surprisingly…) ______________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________.
(LIST YOUR INSIGHTS ABOVE)
How might the field change in the next year?
3 to 5 years?
Continue to conduct “environmental scanning” to speculate on how
conditions and trends might impact your user’s career field of choice in
the next 3 to 5 years. You won’t be able to forecast precisely, but you
can imagine the changes that might occur based on the trends and
conditions you know today.
What skills will be required in the next 3 to 5
years?
