Through Love, Hope, Loss,
and Pain, sheds Art
Feminism and Art in the 20th Century
With works by artist Frida Kahlo
Curator Kelly Honorato
After a tragic bus accident that left Frida,
broken and scarred at the young age of 18,
we begin a journey of love in 1929 for fellow
Mexican Communist Society member and muralist,
Diego Rivera.
This piece presents a self portrait when she married
Diego. She has herself as the main focal point of the
painting, and you will see her signature single brow in all of
her pieces. She is in a traditional fitted, white wedding
gown with the image ending just below the bustline, as to
express more of her feminine characteristics and curves that
Diego may have been so attracted to, she said this is how
Diego would remember her best. With a clock on a small
shelf, at head level and airplane flying up, out of the
window behind her, possibly to show her time spent with
Diego and how fast it went by.

In addition to a major turning point of her life, in the same year of her marriage, Frida
painted the bus image, right before the accident happened. It displays five adults. Three
women, two men, and a child looking out of an opening of the bus. With long wooden
benches and wooden floors, it clearly expresses the simplicity of the bus that could
not protect her and the other riders, from what happened the day that destroyed her
body but brought to life an exquisite artist she had no idea of the impact she would later
have on the world.
She often created the illusion of the social and
economic acceptance she yearned for by painting
herself standing usually, wearing long flowing dresses,
or fancy, floral head and hairpieces, as in this selfportrait. It is herself, with Diego in the middle of her
forehead, to exactly accentuate how much she thought
of Diego, in a loving and adoring way or even how
much he frustrated her, and wearing a floral crown
with a white floral frilled mane, the light colors could
have been in remembrance of her remarrying Diego in

Frida Kahlo, The Wounded Deer, 1943
After countless surgeries, miscarriages, hospitalizations, affairs of both parties, Kahlo began creating
darker images as her mind, body, heart, and soul deteriorated. One piece that raised talk in the streets,
is The Wounded Deer from 1946. It is an image of a female deer’s body, with the head of Frida in a
forest and a lake far off in the background , shot multiple times by arrows in multiple parts of the
deer’s body. Most likely to give the detailed amount of pain in all the parts of her body that was left
Frida started taking on bolder and more destructive approaches of her work, using harder and more
angry brush strokes and outlines of each object in the image, to justify how she felt at that exact
moment of making the painting. Her colors went from light, soft, elegant, and feminine cremes to
thick lines and darker shades, creating time, distance, and textures of the objects and the environment
she was in, such as the pain of surgeries, the darkness of being lonely, and long hallways of hospitals.
Frida often used forms of pyschoanalysis, where she used images of self experience, dreams, and
images of the mind, conscious and unconscious states. Also bringing Fauvism into her work, by using
using violent, darker colors and figurative expressions of her pain and suffering like a shot animal, in
order to express exactly what she felt.
Years later, with her health diminishing, she
actually made a portrait other than herself or still
life called Portrait of My Father from 1951.
The one that brought to life her artistic creativity.
The one that gave her hope after a long life of
excruciating and painful existence. She puts him in a
handsome suit with his camera behind him. I bring this into
the collection because he was the one man that had such
hope for Frida, always unconditional love for his daughters,
and the impact of losing him had on Kahlo, and the pain he
helped get her through, throughout her entire life. Frida
Simply adored her father.
Frida Kahlo, Portrait of My Father, 1951
The letter written below the portrait translates to
“I paint my father, Wilhem Kahlo, a German
artist of the photography profession. Generous
and intelligent, and brave because he suffered 70
years of epilepsy, but never stopped working and
fought against Hitler.

Frida Kahlo
Frida began working on this piece of her family tree in the 1940’s and just worked on it here and
there until she passed away in 1954. At the top left are her paternal grandparents and the top right
are her maternal grandparents, with her parents in the middle. At the bottom of the painting are her
two sisters, Matilde and Adriana, and her youngest sister, Cristina on left, the viewer’s right. It is
unexplained who the other three unfinished images are. Some believe it was to be Cristina’s
children, and some have said it to be Frida’s two half- sisters and the actual unidentifiable image to
be of who would have been her older brother, whom only lived for a few days after being born .
