Option 1 (Best for Art Majors, Fine Art Majors, Visual Art Education Majors).
Of the periods that we have covered (or will cover this semester), consider which is most influential to your
work as an artist (or which do you imagine could be the most influential to your future work). Be specific
about the period that you pick. In other words, don’t just pick “China” but choose “Ming Dynasty China,” etc.
Your task will be to research this period, and if specific artists are known from the period that you choose you
should focus on a specific artist. You will create a work of art that shows the influence of the style and artist
that you select. You will submit two separate written products along with your work of art:
1. Explain the work of the artist you chose. Focusing on two or three of his/her works of art, consider
media, style, form, context, and the concept behind the artist’s works as you explain his or her work.
Discuss how the artist’s work relates to that of his/her contemporaries. This portion of your written
product should be 3-4 pages long. At the end of the 3-4 page paper, you should include the images to
which you refer in the paper. Images are not included in the paper length. See the image page
guidelines below for more detail.
2. Your own explanation of the work of art that you produced explaining how it reflects the work of the
artist and period that you selected, how it reflects your own style, and how his/her work is influential
on your work as an artist. You should discuss a bit about your own choices of medium, style, and form
as you do this. This portion of your written product should be 2 pages long.
Option 2 (Best for Graphic Design and BFA Graphic Design students).
Imagine that you are working for a US company that is trying to expand its marketing abroad to one of the
countries or regions that we have studied this semester. You need to adapt their US ad campaign to fit and
appeal to this new culture. Design a magazine layout or poster for their ad campaign. As you do so, focus on
one specific period from the culture’s history. For example, if you are designing an ad for China, you might
choose “Ming Dynasty China;” you might also focus on a specific artist from your time period.
Pick the region and era of your choice and focus on a specific style or artist within that era’s history. Design a
poster or magazine layout and write the following:
1. Write a report for the client explaining the aesthetics of the culture that you chose and the themes
prevalent in art of that group. Focusing on two or three works of art from this artist/period, explain
characteristics of media, style, treatment of form as well as the context in which the works were
created and the concept behind them. If focusing on a single artist, be sure to explain his or her
relationship to the overall period. This portion of your written product should be 3-4 pages long. At
the end of the 3-4 page report, you should include the images to which you refer in the report. Images
are not included in the paper length. See the image page guidelines below for more detail.
2. Write a 2-page letter to your client explaining how you developed your poster or layout. What
elements from the region and era inspired it? How does your design reflect that region and era?
For both options: Provide specific examples of the period/artist. One of your images may be something
covered in class, but the others should be something that we have not covered in class. Also, be sure to cite
sources when necessary. You should not include quotes from any of the sources that you use. All parts of your
paper should be written in your own words. Use Chicago style citations (footnotes) as necessary to cite
original ideas and arguments from your sources.
Your paper should include the following:
1. Your 3-4 page write-up on the period/artist and your 2-page write-up about your own work.
2. Bibliography of all works consulted (aside from those only used for their images).
3. Appendix of Images.
4. NOTE—The, bibliography and images DO NOT count toward the page minimums for the two papers.
5. All papers will be submitted to the turnitin website for grading.
6. Very important—In each instance, your graded work will be the written product; the artwork will be
a minor portion of the grade.
Citation and Bibliography Guidelines
• All citations in the paper should follow the Chicago Manual of Style (footnotes).
• The bibliography should be formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
• The bibliography should include a minimum of 8 sources. At least 5 of these should be print sources (print
sources include articles found in JSTOR). Your textbook does not count toward the minimum number of
sources, though you should include it in the bibliography if it is used.
• While you may use some Internet sources for your information, they must be reliable sources (no
Wikipedia). For more on distinguishing reliable sources from unreliable sources, see this website from the
University of California, Berkley:
Image Page Guidelines
• Images that you refer to in your paper should be included at the end of the paper. These may be
black and white or color images. There may be up to two images on one page.
• Ordering the images: The images should be in the order that they appear in your paper and be
labeled Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.
• Captions: Each image should include a caption with the figure number followed by a brief caption
and a citation for the source of the image. (For example, Figure 1: Leonardo da Vinci, The Mona
Lisa, 1503-1505.
• When you refer to the images in the text of your paper, you should refer to them by their title and
put the figure number in parenthesis following the sentence in which you mentioned the figure.
Correct: Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa displays the fashion of the time by having shaved her
eyebrows (Figure 1). Incorrect: Figure 1 shows the fashion of the time through Mona Lisa’s shaved
eyebrows. Provide parenthetical references to figure numbers only as often as you need to in
order to prevent confusion. See pages 300-301 of Barnet for further instructions and examples.
Other Guidelines
• All portions of the written assignment must be typed. Use a standard font (Times New Roman, 12
point or something of equivalent size). It should be double-spaced and use 1-inch margins. The
final written product must be stapled.
• All written portions of this project must use standard English grammar, correct spelling, and be well
organized. I encourage you to seek assistance from the SVSU Writing Center.
• Very important–Spell check and proofread all written portions of your project. Use your computer
to help you, but print your papers and read them for errors before submitting them. Papers that
have not undergone a careful proofreading and spell-checking process may receive a “0” at the
discretion of the instructor.
• Also very important—Plagiarized papers will not be tolerated.
Starting Points for research: Aside from your textbook, I recommend the following resources as you are
starting your research:
1. Thematic Essays from the Metropolitan Museum of Art-
2. Grove Art Online—This may be accessed through the SVSU library. Click the tab labeled “databases,”
then select “art.”
Additional resources: Once you are further along with your research, I recommend the following for more
specific materials on your artist and period:
1. JSTOR—An online database of journal articles. Available under “databases” through the SVSU library.
2. Getty Research Institute database BHA—An online database of art history articles. You will need to
search for any articles that you find in this database through the SVSU library catalog. If the library
doesn’t own what you need, you may request it through Interlibrary Loan (see the link for this on the
library main page).
3. World Cat—A catalogue of books owned by libraries throughout the world. You may need to request
these through Mel-Cat or Interlibrary loan.
