Have you ever seen you see the formation of a big piece of work as a work of art? I did.
During the spring break, I went to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on the 151 3rd
street, San Francisco to see an exhibition Scaling Up by the artist Alexander Calder. This
exhibition attracted me because that exhibition provided the audience with a close-up
observation of the artists small works and I learned about the excellent opportunity for the
formation of large-scale works. Another reason I was interested in it is that the works look very
simple but sophisticated. Also, the vivid outline and the dynamic line of the sculpture gave me
visual enjoyment. The opening dates of this exhibition are from October 21, 2017 to August 19,
2018. And the opening hours of the museum are ten oclock to five oclock every day except
Wednesday. The ticket for adults between 19 to 24 years old is 19 dollars per person, and for
adults over 25 years old is 25 dollars per person.
The most attractive to me, of course, is because this exhibition gave the audience a great
opportunity to observe the process of large-scale molding works. I especially appreciate Calder
s idea for these works. He formed a large model with small parts and integrated this process into
his final work. As a fashion design student, I was really inspired by the idea that I can use the
design process of a piece of clothing as a design? I dont think this is a common design idea.
The second point that attracted me was the dynamic contours of his works. I had always
thought that standing sculptures were rigid and boring, but Calders work made my eyes light up.
Because I saw a flexible curve in his work, he combined a straight line with the outline of
flowing water, with a lovely round, but also a regular square. This also inspired me in particular
because I always like to use the regular straight lines in my design, I overlook the beauty of
The last reason why I like this exhibition is that his works look simple but complex
especially in color which really magic and interesting. In this series of exhibitions, he only used
the three primary colors of red, yellow and blue, and black and white. Although he used minimal
color, it made my visual enjoyment amazing. This reminds me of the final project of textile class
I was preparing recently. I always like to use advanced gray these colors, and I forget the
primary colors can also create an excellent visual effect.
In conclusion, I recommend that the design students go to the SFMOMA to see this
exhibition, Scaling Up. I think if you carefully read each of his works, you will undoubtedly gain
some different design ideas, not only the design of the sculpture but also a design concept that
can be used in various professional fields. This is really a great exhibition.
