Article Review: Adoptive Parent Hostility and Childrens Peer Behavior Problems
Elam, Harold, Neiderhiser, Reiss, Shaw, Natsuaki, & Leve, (2014) conducted a
comprehensive analysis of how parental hostility can impact a childs emotional, social and
academic development. The article uses adoption at birth design to control for passive genotypeenvironment correlation, directly examine evocative genotype-environment correlation (rGE)
and lastly examine the relationship between childrens peer behavior and family processes. The
paper explored the evocative effect of genetic influences that underlie low social motivation on
parent-child hostility and the resultant effect of parental hostility on the preschool childrens
disruptive peer behavior. The paper found a positive relationship between the mother low
behavioral motivation and Childs little social motivation along with their parents low behavioral
motivation is a predictor of childs social motivation. Furthermore, parent-child hostility is a
predictor of the childs future disruptive behavior.
The paper was chosen because it presents psychology as a science, unlike many other
psychology papers. In the first place, the researcher collects empirical data, use scientific tools
like path analysis and sampling to arrive at their conclusions. The article uses the two primary
methods of scientific inquiry which are experimentation and observation. All statistical analyses
and scientific procedures including modeling were employed in analyzing the empirical data.
Control variables were also used to ensure that prenatal influences did not affect the results.
