Running Head: GUN CONTROL LAWS

GUN CONTROL LAWS
2
Gun control has become a controversial issue following the rise in gun violence in the
country. In the U.S gun ownership per 100 people will be 88.8 guns. The gun control laws
have been seen to have several loopholes that culprits will take advantage of. The gun
culture can be derived from the past during the colonial period, the frontier days as well as
the laws under the Second Amendment.
One opposition that has faced the need for gun control law which will restrict the
ownership of the guns will be about the Second Amendment which protects the ownership of
a firearm since it gun ownership is based on the culture of America that was established in
the past. The view is impressive since it provides that law which restricts gun ownership will
be unconstitutional hence the rights which are listed in the American Constitution ought to be
protected. If I believed this view, I would mainly notice the American culture which is based
on gun ownership from the colonial and frontier period. The gun culture in America has
played a vital role in the making of the Second Amendment. The gun violence in the past
however even after the establishment of the Second Amendment was quite low. The idea
might be true if a violation of this right will lead to the infringement of other rights such as
the freedom of speech, maintaining of liberty and so on.
The second opposition relies on the fact that gun control laws will not serve as
deterrence when it comes to the prevention of crime but gun ownership will deter people
from committing a crime. The view is quite impressive since the main idea in this opposition
focuses on violent crimes’ rate dropping as gun ownership increases. If I believed the view, I
would notice a drop in the number of deaths which are experienced during shootings. The
idea will be true in cases where the criminals have no respect for the law hence criminals
owning guns will make it easier for them to commit crimes
GUN CONTROL LAWS

Another view which opposes mine will be the fact that gun control laws will violate
the right one has to self-defense which further affects a person’s safety. What is interesting
about this view is that gun ownership is associated with self-defense which is practiced when
a person encounters a violent criminal. What I would notice I believed this view is the fact
that people felt safer when they owned guns. A good percentage of women who owned guns
felt safe since an encounter with a violent criminal will lead them to protect themselves.
When a woman’s life is being threatened, she will use the gun she owns as a form of
protection. This idea will be valid provided the ownership of a gun is used solely for selfdefense. Shooting another who is not armed or is not violent will not be regarded as selfdefense. So the conditions for this idea to be right will have to be when a person is facing a
violent person who is armed.
`
In conclusion, gun laws may infringe or not infringe the rights that have been
mentioned in the Second Amendment. I agree that gun ownership has been derived from the
past, but in the 20th -21st century, the increase in the ownership of the guns has led to more
gun violence than what was seen in the past after the Second Amendment was pushed
through. Hence, for now, there is still a need for gun control laws which will restrict certain
persons from owning a firearm.
