EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT: INTERVIEW
* Interview a Researcher: Write a 3-4 page paper based on a 10-20 minute in-person semistructured interview with someone who conducts research on psychological constructs (e.g.,
psychology, social work, public health, nutrition, human development etc.) at GMU or any other
institution. The goal will be to learn about what types of tests and measures they use in their
research, why and how they chose those measures, and what considerations they take when
choosing measures to use in their research.
*It can take time to find an appropriate researcher to interview and also to schedule an interview.
It is therefore wise to begin working on this assignment as soon as possible. You can begin by
going through the list of psychology faculty at GMU and finding one that is conducting research
that interests you. You may also interview a graduate student who is conducting research. Then
you can send them an email explaining the purpose of the assignment with the goal of
coordinating a time to meet. Below is an example of an email you can send (you can edit the one
below or write your own from scratch).
Dear Professor X,
I am an undergraduate student at GMU majoring in psychology and I am currently taking a
course on psychological measurement and testing (Psyc320 taught by Dr. Hilah Kaufman). I
have the opportunity to earn extra credit by interviewing a researcher who studies psychological
constructs. The goal of the 10-20 minute interview is to learn more about what sorts of tests and
measures you use in your research, how/why you chose those measures, and what role tests and
measures play in your work. I will then write a short paper about our conversation. I would
greatly appreciate the opportunity to interview you for this project. Please let me know if you
would be interested and, if so, when would be a convenient time to meet.
Sincerely,
Jane Doe
*You can use the same questions below, edit them, or create your own. Take notes during the
interview, and then ideally write out additional notes following the interview while the
information is still fresh in your mind.
1. Name of researcher being interviewed, title
2. Institution/department where they work and how long they have worked there.
3. Please tell me about the general research you do, including specific projects. What constructs
do you study?
4. What specific tests/measure do you use in your research? If you use many, can you describe
one or two that you use most frequently or that you are particularly familiar with.
5. Why did you choose to use these measures? For example, is it due to cost, convenience,
psychometric soundness, easy of administration etc. ?
6. What advice do you have for future researchers looking for tests and measure to use in their
research?
7. When you are looking for new tests/measures, what resources/databases do you use?
*Your paper should:
I. Summarize your interview (you can include quotes). Include a brief synopsis of every
questions asked and the answer provided. Describe date, time, & location of interview.
II. Include at least a full paragraph on your overall thoughts about the experience of conducting
an interview (i.e., administering a test). For example: Was it easier or harder than you thought?
Did you take any steps to establish rapport? Were there any circumstances that made the
experience easy or difficult?
II. Conclude with an overall summary of this assignment and list at least 2-3 things that you
learned throughout the process.
