In today’s world, many people across the nation deal with stress on a daily basis as a part
of life. One of the most common physiological disorders which can be caused by stress in the
world is Anxiety; it has major effects on a person’s way of living and daily life. On the pro side
of anxiety, there are many good reasons to address the human body. Self-help requires not only
mental strength but will power. Many therapists are taking new approaches and treating with
self-help techniques rather than addictive medication. The negative side to seeing a doctor who
prescribes different type of physiological medicines opposed to self-helping yourself is the major
addiction downfall that can occur. There are two types of help: Self-Help techniques and
professional help provided by a doctor or therapist involving medication. The pro side
specifically is that only you know your own body, self-helping yourself can make you grow
stronger. The con side is medication that can possibly become addictive and make things worse,
Doctors give medication and sometimes more than needed. While medication can be helpful for
more serious disorders, it can often make you worse and the medication can be addictive; adults
and children should try self-help before medication via a professional because there could be
ways to help you first.
The Literature Review
To better understand the issue with ways to deal with anxiety, an overview of anxiety and
the detrimental effects it has on people must be presented. Further, this analysis will investigate
further detail on the two sides of anxiety treatments, beginning with the self-help side, which
favors seeking self-help as an initial step rather than rushing the intake of medication. Then the
position of those for medication intake prescribed by a licensed doctor will be presented and
addressed. To reiterate, this is the con side, arguing for medication to be the first step in anxiety
A Brief Description of Anxiety
Anxiety is a group of mental disorders dealing with feelings, worrying, and fear (Gokce,
2018). When someone deals with anxiety, they tend to struggle with it in future life events as
well as current ones, which can have a great negative impact on one’s life. The MNT Editorial
Team (2017) says “Anxiety disorders affect 40 million people in the United States (U.S.). It is
the most common group of mental illnesses in the country.” (Edenfield, 2008,4.) This shows how
common this disorder is and that just a small amount of stress can lead to anxiety. This means
that almost one in every ten people suffer from the effects of anxiety at any given time. Almost
everyone deals with anxiety sometime throughout their life. Considering how big of a problem
anxiety disorder is, there are many different methods of treatment present today that some people
agree with and some people do not. Falling into the category of treatments are self-help and
The Argument for Self-help Treatment of Anxiety
However, proponents of the self-help style of treatment to anxiety would not wish to set a
sort of ban on medication; on the contrary, they don’t want medication to be the go-to treatment,
but to be a last resort in extreme cases. The first step to treating anxiety should be through selfhelp. There are many different forms of self-help for anxiety treatment such as exercise and
mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs). MBIs can be in such forms as Mindfulness-based
Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) (Edenfield,
2012). These forms of self help can be more effective than medication and eliminate the
addictive nature of it. Opting for self-help rather than medication can also save individuals
money when treating anxiety. In many forms, self-help is completely free, and one can partake in
these activities as often or as little as wanted. Anxiety is present in all of humanity in all types of
circumstances. So, for those who don’t partake in consumption of medicine, or simply can’t
afford it, there is a free and healthier way to go about treating their anxiety issues.
The Case for Medication Consumption as A First Step
Psychology Research and Behavior Management, says “Antidepressants such as the
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective norepinephrine/noradrenaline
reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are generally regarded as first-line medications.” Li (2017) goes on
to talk about other medication that could possibly work and only mentions types of medication as
treatments to a disorder related to mass amounts of anxiety. Li and others with her opinion on
medication as the only real treatment don’t see self-help as a treatment. As she talks about failed
attempts and failed medication to help treat this disorder it gives rise to the question of self-help
rather than medication. After so many failed medications that don’t give positive outcomes to the
body and cause addictions and other harmful side effects, there is rising opinion for self-help
treatment as a more sought out method of resolving the issue of anxiety in so many individuals
around the globe. Addiction has become a major issue, is why self-help should be considered in
every person.
While doctors continue to discuss the pros and cons of different treatments to anxiety, the
public opinions also grow stronger on both sides concerning the health and treatment of people
across the globe. Because the method of treatment for anxiety can have such great affect on ones
health, it is becoming a growing topic that more and more people are seeking answers as to
which method to pursue. Those who are in agreement with self-help treatment push for (a) this to
be the main treatment and recommendation from licensed doctors rather than prescription of
medicine, which should be saved as a last resort in extreme cases, and (b) for self-help treatment
to be a deterrent to anxiety disorder in humanity. For those who are against self-help method of
treatment and for immediate medication consumption, they don’t intend on changing their mind
anytime soon. They feel that it is a disorder biologically and can’t be treated with self-help
because the only way to treat biological problems is with proper medication. Because of the basis
of their claim being that it is biological rather than emotional, it is hard to convince them that
self-help would have any affect at all on anxiety. This is the stark contrast between the self-help
supporters and the medication supporters for anxiety treatment. While medication can be helpful
for more serious disorders, adults and children should try self-help before medication via a
professional because there could be ways to help yourself first .Professional help in some cases
can make you worse, and medication can become addictive.
