Scenario: The email you drafted was successful and generated a great deal of interest; in fact, after
some skillful negotiation, you have secured a job at Tech Shield. As a result, you now enjoy a number
of friendships with some very interesting co-workers, one of whom is — of course — Milton. Welcome to
your new career at Tech Shield!
Tech Shield has recently outperformed the market considerably. As a result, it is interested in investing
significant capital into another business. There is, however, some debate as to what company it should
select. You have been asked to create a report evaluating a company for investment; the
executives will then use this report to make an informed decision on investment. With the exception of
those listed below, select any company you wish. Choose wisely: this will likely be the company you
work with for assignments three and four as well.
In selecting a company, consider the pros and cons of large vs. small companies and publicly-traded
vs. privately held. Large companies tend to have a great deal of information available, but it may not all
be useful information, and it is possible to become overwhelmed by the sheer size of the corporation.
Small companies may allow you a more personal connection, but it will require more work to find the
information you need (especially from objective sources). Similarly, it can be more difficult to find
information on privately-owned companies, particularly where financial information is concerned.
Businesses headquartered outside the US are acceptable for this assignment; keep in mind, though,
that reporting requirements often vary from country to country.
Evaluate your company as you see fit, using standards and criteria that business professionals would
consider reasonable. Consider drawing from your own training; while financial data is always a good
place to start, what would tell an accountant, a finance specialist, a marketing expert, a managerial
professional, etc. that a company was healthy? You are now that professional—how would you make
the call?
For a paper of this length, two to three categories would be appropriate. Consider all aspects you feel
relevant. While you are not restricted to this list, here are some suggested categories: business
strategies, quality concerns with the product(s), labor practices, business ethics, market share,
advertising strategies, Internet and cyber presence, product presence in the general marketplace,
financial standings, research and development, or growth. You are also welcome to develop your own
categories.
All essays should provide an ultimate and general evaluation of the company in question, but strong
essays will provide nuanced considerations of different categories and explain how those varied
individual evaluations connect to one another and support your overall position on investment.
Remember that no company is perfect, and counter-arguments that consider company weaknesses will
help make your paper more nuanced and well-rounded.
Note that you may select a company, only to find through your research that it would be a problematic
choice for investment. This happens from time to time. Consider exploring other positions on
investment: a solid yes, a qualified yes (invest with caution), a qualified no (not right now, but maybe
later on if certain things change), or a solid no. Avoid being tied to an initial position and trying to force
the data to fit—it doesn’t work. Instead, start with preliminary research on the company, draft an initial
hypothesis on investment, then stay flexible as you go into more in-depth research.
As a short report, this paper will require the following:

Note that while the citations and Works Cited page are in MLA format, the paper itself is not. The
short report should be presented in a business style. Consult chapter nine in Business Communication
for very useful suggestions on formatting for business, including appropriate use of page numbers.
Research conducted can include sources such as Mergent, Hoover’s, Factiva, and other resources
available at the Rivera Library. You can also use reputable sources found online or in print, as well as
governmental sources (for reported financial data, for example) and company reports.
Your final draft is due to SafeAssign on Tuesday, February 6th before lecture. Check with your TA to
see if they are requiring hard copies.
Excluded Companies: These companies, for various reasons, are not to be used for this course’s
papers. You are welcome, however, to select similar companies from the same industry.
