International Business Case Study
I work in a promotional product business. We supply all kinds of promotional giveaway products
to MLB, NHL and NBA. Ninety five percent of the products are made in China. Because the
infrastructure in china is so much more developed than any other country like Bangladesh or
Vietnam. There are a lot of issues we face doing business in another country. Culture, language
and factory working condition are the most common ones.
Since we are in the promotional business, we have very strict requiring on delivery and price.
Those game event are set and giveaway gift are posted online to promote the event and sell
ticket. We have to deliver the commerce to client on time. Those team has very low budget on
these product, we cannot afford buying them in those modern factories. Because the price is
high, we would not win the bid, however; the difficulty here is if we buy it in a lower standard
factory, we could win the job, the factory worker is working in the very poor condition.
This is a very practical case in today’s world. We are not a big business. We need to survive, in
the meantime we also need to make ethical decision. Right now, as our company is growing, we
have done a lot of our jobs in those small factories in China. I understand this not ethical at all.
Because we all should do our job to avoid having people working in subpar condition to limit
sweatshop. In this case, since we all have the responsibility to protect those labors, why those big
MLB company offer such low budget to force our smaller importers to make those cheap
products. I am in charge of negotiating price with factory, I feel like sometimes we are pushing
them to limit for us to make us tons of money. This is really not fair.
Our production time is normally 90 days, 30 days to get sample approved, 30 days for production
and 30 days to ship them here by ocean. We have to go ocean, because air shipping will make us
lose money. We only do air shipping if we cannot meet to delivery date. We have specific
process of making the product. One process went wrong, the whole project will be in trouble. We
are really in a business that none of the detail in the production can go wrong, otherwise we lose
money. I remember that one time, we are making 20,000 pcs bags for a MLB team, after the logo
approved, the factory already put them into production, the client added one sponsor logo. This is
not doable because once the production is on assembling line, they cannot go back to the
imprinting process. This put us in a very awkward position. The factory cannot add an extra logo
any more except they salvage all the bags they are working on and buy the material again to redo
them. This will cost even more money than the price we sell. Another option we have is giving
up on this factory and find another factory to make these bags. This will make us a cheater
because the factory will bare all the cost of the bags. We will probably lose our reputation as a
client to those oversee factory. At the end, we force the factory to stand half of the cost which is
not the worst, but we should have paid all the cost since we approved everything.
Even though we are a small company. Sometimes it is hard for us to make decision between a
huge cost or losing reputation. I still think ethic is the most important thing for a company no
matter big cooperation or small business. If we have approved and promised something we have
to keep our word, even this may cost our money. With ethic and reputation, we still have the
change to make the money back. If we lost our ethic, we will not have chance to make money
anymore.
