Smart Grid
I’m sure you’re asking yourself, what is a Smart Grid? And what makes it smart? Well to
answer those, you must first understand what a grid is.
A grid refers to an electric grid that delivers power to your home. An electric grid is
comprised of things like transformers, substations, and miles of network transmission lines.
These components help to deliver the power we consume on a daily basis. This is done so by
sending power to your household through the transmission lines. Every time you turn on a light
or start up the microwave your house is requesting power to run these devices. The grid
supplies that power.
What makes the grid smart? The difference between a grid and a smart grid is a grid
runs on a basic concept. Supply, supply, supply! A smart grid however operates more on the
two-way communication it has between the supplier and its consumer. This is done by the
sensing within the transmission lines. Because the smart grid senses the power communication
demands from a particular household it is able to respond much more effectively and
efficiently, thus making it a smart grid.
Smart Grids are the future for most of the world in terms of power consumption. Due to
the increasing demands of the 21st century, our current method of providing power is reaching
its limit. A Smart Grid can be beneficial for us in the long run, not just for knowing how much
power you consume but for other things as well. Such as improved security, restoration of
electricity after a power interruption, reduce peak demand, which will help lower electricity
rates and even rerouting electricity if equipment or outages take place.

There are however some bumps in Smart Grids future. One issue is that Smart Grids
require smart metering on appliances in your home, so that it can make the appropriate
calculations and adjust power demands accordingly. Having smart meters attached to devices
such as hair dryers, microwaves, washing machines and ovens makes them practically mini
radiation transmitters. Radiation won’t be emitted to the point of a nuclear reactor, but it will
be equivalent to the amount emitted from your cell phone. This worries many due to the
effects radiation causes. Another threat that Smart Grids will have to deal with is Cyber Attacks.
The more computerized Smart Grids become, they run the risks of being attacked or exploited.
Who’s to say that viruses won’t cripple entire cities, leaving blackouts and allowing wide spread
panic and crazed citizens to loot local stores? Most importantly Smart Grids require the
replacement of our current configuration of power; this will require billions of dollars and years
of work and fine tuning before we can truly see the benefits of Smart Grids. Most of that money
is coming from the Government. Hopefully that doesn’t mean that they will limit power
consumption or implement rules and regulations for consumers to follow.
Truth is, no one is exactly sure what to expect as Smart Grids come on line. Companies
like Google, Cisco and GE have already begun partnerships with energy companies to start
testing. We can only wait and stay as informed as possible to better understand the pros and
cons of Smart Grid technology. Until then we’ll just have to monitor our power consumption as
best we can and help buy some time to allow Smart Grid technology to get a jump start on the
ever demanding 21st century before we consume all available power.

Green Computing
Green computing is the environmentally responsible use of computers and related
resources. Such practices include the implementation of energy-efficient central processing
units (CPUs), servers and peripherals, as well as reduced resource consumption and proper
disposal of electronic waste (No author posted, 2007). Energy-efficient computers help reduce
the total cost of computer ownership since they use a lot less energy to run on a day to day
basis unlike archaic computers.
Energy-efficient server rooms are also sought after since they use a lot of energy than
ever before. Because the processors within the computer use less energy, the server room will
also cost less to keep cool. Server rooms must be kept at a precise temperature because the
equipment can fail if it gets too hot. Warranties also will be voided on equipment failure if the
server administrator does not keep the server room below certain temperatures.
Other good green computing methods that help reduce the total cost of ownership is
making personal computer easier to recycle. The components within the computer are
composed of many different materials. Some of the materials within the computer’s
components are known to be hazardous to people like beryllium, cadmium, lead, mercury,
brominated flame retardants, selenium, and polyvinyl chloride.
Many companies are in the
process of making new components without these hazardous components so it is cheaper to
recycle computers. Currently obsolete computers can actually cost the consumer money for it
to be recycled properly. A few manufacturers are aware of this and offer free recycling of
obsolete computers with the purchase of a computer from their company. There were

considered to be roughly 40 million computers obsolete in 2007. As this number grows, there
will be a need for equipment that will be more environmental friendly so recycling is not as
expensive.
I believe the combination of building greener computers and implementing programs to
change users’ behavior is needed so that computers will operate more environmentally
friendly. There are already many options for users’ to enable on their us er interface so their
computer is not running at maximum power when it is not needed. New programming and
psychological monitoring software can still greatly improve the computers energy usage.
Ultimately building greener computers will yield greater benefits in my opinion than
implementing new software. There is only so much software can do that will help save on
computing cost. As technology increases, I believe new ideas will continue to cut the power
consumption computers currently use. There has already been a huge difference in energy
consumption costs between computers built in 2005 versus computers built in 2008. I believe
this trend will continue and will yield greater benefits than implementing new programs that
change users’ behavior so they operate their computers in a more responsible manner.
After researching at the EPEAT Web site I have determined that there were a few
computer manufacturers that had some of the best green computing ratings. Toshiba had 159
models in several countries that all were of gold rating. This is the highest rating that is
achievable from this website currently. Some other green computing companies that had
similar standards were Apple, Asus, Getac, and Grace Global, Inc.
