Paper 3Character Analysis
Due Thursday, April 05
Using your work from your character analyses, you will write a 3-4 page paper that compares
and contrasts one character from each of two plays: Machinal and The Good Woman of Setzuan
OR Fences and The America Play. This paper should examine ways in which the characters
speak to each other across the plays, as well as forward a strong argument concerning the
function of character in each play.
You will likely need to select the elements of your character analyses that you find the most
compelling. Do NOT try to fit everything from the full character analysis into this paperdoing
so will lead you towards generalizations and lack of specificity. Narrowing your scope to a few
select elements will give your comparison/contrast focus and allow you to delve into your
argument with specificity and clarity.
Be sure you focus your paper around your thoughts, ideas, analysis, and interpretation of
character, rather than providing a general description or summary of a character. I am interested
in your thoughts and ideaswe have all read the plays; I want to see your argument about what
you have read.
Your paper should include specific examples from the text, including citations. This paper
should be 3-4 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with oneinch margins, paginated, and follow MLA guidelines.
Papers are due prior to the start of class on Thursday, April 05.
