Over the recent past, the aspect of collaboration in the nursing field has been gaining
popularity. Collaboration in the healthcare sector is paramount because it leads to quality
outcomes. intra professional collaboration (IPC) refers to the collaboration of professionals to
achieve better outcomes. This paper seeks to examine intra professional collaboration in an acute
care hospital where there is an integration of new medical record system.
Selected Clinical Setting
Upgrading the medical record system in an acute care hospital is paramount. This helps a
healthcare facility to make work effective among its employees. As such, it requires a good intra
professional collaboration (IPC) for the new system to achieve quality care in the hospital
setting. While the use of new medical record system such as EMR is imperative to a healthcare,
it brings with it challenges because the health professionals have to be trained to adjust to the use
of the new system (Meijer, de Groot, Blaauw-Westerlaken & Damoiseaux, 2016). As such, it
requires intra professional learning (IPL) that can be challenging because of the culture diversity
in the workplace and also with resistance from some health professionals.
Overall Plan
As a nurse educator in the acute care hospital, it is my responsibility to come up with a
plan on how to introduce and train the staff in the hospital on how to use the new medical record
system. To this end, I will have to employ good teaching strategies keeping in mind that the
health professionals in the hospital are many different generations, and cultures. As such, it will
be important to consider all discipline levels. I would initiate plan for nurse’s aides and
laboratory personal to train first because I think there would be less push back and the patient’s
treatment is implemented on imaging and laboratory results. Then nurses and radiology and last
physicians, this strategy would help in gaining trust at each level on how the system would
benefit each group. The change and training for the nurses and physicians would be by
demonstrating a more sufficient way of expediting what they need at the least amount of time.
EMR Introduction and Design
The first thing that will be necessary for this induction and design process of developing
knowledge of the new medical record system among the health professionals will be to conduct a
collaborative meeting (Finkelman, 2015). This is paramount as it involves health professionals
from all the department in the hospital. When implementing successful change, it is necessary to
demonstrate with evidence based practice literature how other organizations and facilities have
increased productivity and satisfaction through statistics, examples, and testimonies from other
healthcare professionals alike. In the collaborative meeting, it will be good to have a strict time
for starting and ending the meeting, and use humor lest the members feel bored. Additionally,
every health professional must receive an agenda about the meeting in advance; this will make it
easy to discuss during the meeting, and also gives them a chance to think of any questions they
may want addressed. During the meeting, it will be important to explain in details and in an
objective way what the new medical record will be all about and more importantly the way it
will benefit the organization and the health professionals at large. Further, as a nurse educator, it
will also be important to give others time to give their opinions, express concerns and input on
ideas in developing pathway criteria by the people who will benefit from using the new system.
Achieving buy-in
Achieving buy-in from the staff can be a challenge if they do not see the short-term
advantage of what’s being brought before them. In order to have your employees acceptable to
change As such, explaining the importance of the change to the improvement in patient
outcomes with a creditable change agent, how the change would not be chaotic or dynamic. I
will create buy-in from the staff in demonstrations in collaboration meeting. Through this, it will
be a good platform to achieve buy-in from the health professionals albeit there are those who will
resist the change altogether
Staff Training
From this meeting, the next thing will be to ensure that the health professionals are
trained adequately to have a working knowledge of the new system by open communication with
department managers and supervisors. The first step will be to ensure that the staff is trained will
be to come up with a schedule that shows how often the staff will be trained and from which
department. Ideally, the training will be undertaken every evening for three days every week.
Through this, every department will be aware of when their training will take place so that they
can avail themselves without failure, a factor that will see the staff get to understand the working
of the new system within a short period to enhance efficiency in the hospital. However, to
accommodate each discipline I would hire super users to assist with additional training times
doing the day and evening. Training will be hands on, check off list, and lastly implement a test
your knowledge questionnaire that can focus on what’s not understood. The next step will be to
send soft copies of the training program and cheat sheets to every health professional and others
lists in the noticeboard (Brown & Tanner, 2016). This will help in familiarizing and reminding
the entire staff of the training. Through this, I will ensure that no one misses the training without
any good reason. This will be important to make sure that all staff members are trained in a
timely manner so that they are able to collaborate well in their daily roles.
Teaching Strategies/Diversity of Workers
Change is inevitable and is always faced with resistance. As such, there are those health
professionals who will see the new medical record system as an interruption to their daily work.
This fear of the unknown will be present and it should to be addressed in a wise constructive
manner. For the few members of the acute care hospital who will not be comfortable with the
change, the best way to address the problem will be to have culture understanding first, a 1:1
meeting with them to address their fears, concerns and explain to them the importance of the new
systems efficiency to their daily routine. This would also give me the opportunity to evaluate
how they would learn best and suggest learning techniques that may enhance their computer
skill. It is only through demonstrating how the system will help in their working and offering
support that they will accept it. “Accommodating diversity will go a long way to achieving
diversity among the health professionals” (Butcher, 2017).
Conclusively, intra professional collaboration is paramount when it comes to the working
of a healthcare organization. As noted in the above discussion, when there is a technology
upgrade in a health care organization it becomes imperative to conduct an intra professional
learning (IPL) strategy that requires collaboration from all parties involved to be a success.
Ideally, effective communication is also key during this process of training health professionals.
Diversity in terms of culture plays an integral role and should to be considered as well as the
involvement of all stakeholders to address instances of resistance.
