Compare and contrast each group members response

Writers must collect the responses to the reading from group members, and faithfully represent those in a one and a half-page document that includes an overall summary of the group’s reactions, and follow that up with specific quotes/examples/questions.Writers must try to make the different responses cohere, perhaps by identifying a pattern in the responses or by linking them together in some way (e.g. “my group’s responses can be summed up as thinking Jones was too hard on contemporary working-class men or thinking Jones was not hard enough.”).In cases when there are some outlier responses that can’t be merged or juxtaposed with the others, writers can just add them at the end, as in “Finally, xxx thought Jones represented a modernist theoretical approach.”Writers can edit group members’ contributions for clarity and style, but they can also include direct quotes if warranted.

Tori: It is interesting to read Alone Together because I would like to think that my
generation barely escaped the large social media and technology takeover; however, in
reality my generation directly applies to the social impacts written by Turkle. Turkle notes
that Americans today are more insecure, isolated, and lonely (pg. 157.) This is strange
because the advances of technology have allowed people to be connected regardless of
their location. I suppose that this concept feeds into Turkle’s main point that although we
can be connected with anyone at any time, these relationships are often artificial and do
not compensate for real, genuine, human connection.
Jen: As a graduating student, I have been exposed to an onset of job interviews in the past
few weeks. This requires face-to-face interaction, manners, and thinking on your feet. It’s
amazing to me that many individuals my age fail to have normal social tendencies. Turkle
talks about the common pattern of insecurity among young adults when having personal
interactions. Unfortunately, I have seen this pattern among my colleagues. Many of friends
of mine are not confident in their social skills and are intimidated by social interactions
that take place in person. They feel much more comfortable holding conversations through
texting, emailing, or social media messaging. This isolated behavior enhanced by
technological advancements has robbed individuals, particular millennials, from possessing
normal social skills. I think the quality of our relationships directly suffer from this ongoing
pattern. Employers are impressed when candidates are able to have a firm handshake,
make eye contact, and know to send a thank you letter. These “assumed” behaviors are now
rare nowadays as many millennials do not even realize their importance. This is a tragic
phenomenon.
Thomas: I thought it was interesting how Turkle thinks of this era as “the beginning of
technology”. While our generation grew up with barbies and transformers, we have witnessed
technology’s increasing power as kids nowadays walk around with their heads down glaring at
their iPhones and iPads. I have seen our generation criticize these kids, and society at large, as
kids are no longer running around outside and scraping their knees but rather feeing joy after
getting over 100 likes on instagram. However, we should not be the ones to criticize as we are
equally to blame—even though we experienced the days prior to the social media takeover, our
generation is predominantly occupied by technology. As Turkle believes that this era is only the
start of technology and now is the time we can can escape before fully entering the technology
era, I wonder if it is actually plausible to avoid this encompassing force of technology.
Sophie: Reading Turkle’s Alone Together caused me not only to think about the impact
technology has had on the younger generation but the impact my generation is feeling, as well.
Days before each interview I’ve had in my third year, I am preparing, thinking about how I am
going to act with my potential employer. I am very comfortable emailing back and forth but start
to get very nervous 30 minutes before the actual interaction. I can only imagine the trouble kids
today will have when they start participating in interviews. Being sucked into their phones and
“connecting” over social media, the younger generation is experiencing less face-to-face
interactions and playing into these curated “realities” they see on a screen. Maybe in the future,
interactions will be solely via social media platforms and eliminate the need for in-person
meetings, which would then prevent the awkward meetings that would likely result from those
with little to no social skills. Is that really a reality we deserve, though? My generation isn’t
immune to this technology takeover either and we should be held accountable for its effects,
also. If there really is a possibility of scaling back the obsessive use of this type of technology,
we have to better emphasize the importance of forming deep connections and how social media
and other platforms don’t do a great job in that area.
