Mechanical Engineering and Music, a Contrast
Music is a diffusive art. It permeates every nook and cranny of our lives whether we
realize it or not. From all of our electronic media to nearly every retail store in America
we are constantly subjected to a magnitude of varying music styles. The same can be
said for products of mechanical engineering. Chances are that you no farther than 20 ft
from something designed or produced by a mechanical engineer at any given time of
the day. Appliances, cars, tools, truly any man made thing you see was either the
brainchild of a mechanical engineer or created using a machine designed by one.
Engineering, like music, is everywhere and is of the utmost importance in our lives.
Music and mechanical engineering share many similarities, from their creative structure
to the way they symbolize the times and even how they change lives; music and
mechanical engineering are undoubtedly related.
Like all things, music has a structure. Before an artist can play they must first have a
direction in mind. Whether it is from sheet music, memorization or simply making
something up on the fly, the musician must have a starting point and a direction they
wish to move toward. The same can be said for a mechanical engineer. Whenever they
begin a project, they have to have a goal and structure in mind or nothing will come
together properly. For example take a simple tune like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.
Knowing that the song would be directed toward a child audience, the songwriter kept
the content relatively simple. It has a duple meter, giving it an easy rhythm to clap or
pat along with, its melody is simple and memorable and the tempo is nice and slow so
children can have a longer time to annunciate the words. With tempo however, once
the child acquires a greater speaking ability they can speed it up and down as they
choose without worrying about annunciation. This “user friendly” style of song is not
unlike a simple household machine. Both are created for ease of use and simplicity to
learn. A bicycle, for example, has some of the same qualities as “Twinkle Twinkle Little
Star”. Its beat, the pattern in which the pedals are pressed down, is also a duple, in the
sense that it is a steady two motion cycle. The simple melody is easy to remember, just
like the feeling of riding a bike. Several elements come together to give that
unforgettable feeling to the rider, or singer, in the musical sense. Now the tempo is a
fairly straightforward comparison. Just as a child can change the tempo of a song after
they have become familiar with it, without fear of mispronunciation, a bike rider can
change the speed at which they are riding without the fear of falling. These are qualities
that both musicians and engineers consider while planning their work. They structure
their creations around whom and what they are for. This is why it often proves difficult
be a composer or engineer, most aren’t cut out for such a rigorous process.
Music and engineering are in a constant state of flux. Never settling for good enough,
always pushing the limits of what can be done. This ferocious ambition is the reason
music and engineering have such a tight grip on society. People look to these topics
everyday and thus they become an innate part of their daily lives. This ingraining into
daily life is why both music and engineering are so representative of the era in which
they occur. Looking at the 60’s, everyone remembers their favorite band, whether it is
Led Zeppelin, The Beatles or Bob Dylan. These bands did not simply play and keep with
tradition; they broke new ground and spoke to those who listened. They stirred
rebellion and an eagerness to change in the country’s youth, just as technological
advancements have. The scientists of NASA did not simply settle for a measly orbit of
the earth, they set their sights on the moon. If you ask someone of this era to recall the
crystallizing moments of their youth, they will most likely re-live three things; the music
they listened to, the political scandals they read about, and the incredible leaps in
engineering and technology they witnessed. Who could forget something as staggering
as the moon landing, or the first time hearing Jimmy Page’s solo in “Stairway to
Heaven”? Even in American history textbooks you will find sections on music and
engineering. The two symbolize much more than noise and rocket fuel. Music and
engineering are facets of human evolution and are remembered as such. It is for this
reason that they represent the era from which they are produced. These subjects are
what push humanity forward, and just like a child learning to ride a bike, humanity will
look back to its pusher.
Just like the father that pushes their child while learning to ride their first bike, music
and engineering have an immeasurable impact on everyone’s life. Music has the power
to heal, to inspire, and to teach. The same goes for engineering. Looking at the medical
field, there have been numerous studies testing music’s effectiveness in helping with
emotional and physical trauma. Among them is a study conducted my Dr. Mary Rorro, a
psychiatrist at the Veterans Affairs clinic in southern New Jersey. Rorro played her viola
for Vietnam War veterans before the beginning of their support group. In doing this she
attempts to remind them that there are still beautiful sounds in the world and not just
those of gunpowder and terror. The results, unsurprisingly, were quite positive with the
veterans reporting that they were far more at ease than usual in their discussion None
of that would have been possible without engineers. However, who would have made
the viola? Who would have made hearing aids for the veterans with hearing loss, or the
prostatic limbs that they depend on to accomplish everyday tasks? The
point here being is that music and engineering heal, both mentally and physically.
They were able to both inspire those wounded soldiers to keep going on as well as live
up to their potential. We have all felt the ineffable upwelling sense of inspiration from
some piece of music or
another. It encourages growth and motivation in much the same way that products
of engineering do. Who isn’t inspired by engineering feats such as the International
Space Station or the Large Hadron Collider? All of these things inspire us to better
ourselves, just as they have bettered society. However, in order for one to better themself, they must first learn, and to learn, one must be taught. Teaching comes in many
forms, one of them being passive. When one sets out to learn about music or
engineering, another individual commonly teaches them. However, the true insight
comes from what they are taught by the music or machine itself. It is the passive
teaching, or rather an inward reflection, which we learn from the most, because it is the
source of originality. Although, were there no music or product of engineering to help
these reflections the task would become much more difficult, so it is in this way that we
learn from them and they change our lives.
Music and mechanical engineering share an innumerable set of qualities. They feed
off of each other, constantly pushing forward, never satisfied with the here and now.
They help
humanity as a whole relate to itself and grow, and from their creative structure to the
way they symbolize the times and even how they change lives; music and mechanical
engineering are undoubtedly related.
