How can ethics training help senior-level managers behave ethically in a cross-cultural setting?
It is important for the leader of a multinational organization to consider the differences in
the ethical issues when partnering with different organizations. Multinational organizations
operate in a wide verity of geographical locations, which makes them face different ethical
standards, cultures, and norms than what they are used to in their home country (Khan, AlMaimani, & Al-Yafi, 2013). When a partnering company of a multinational organization found
to be engaged in a highly unethical practices, the senior-level manager should look at the reason
behind this practice. It is common that the partnering company would look like if it was doing
unethical practices, where actually these practices are ethical in its home country (Cavusgil,
Knight, & Riesenberger, 2013).
In my opinion, if the senior-level manager was faced by the news media that asking about
this kind of ethical issues, it would be better to address how this company was a great partner for
decades and how it is trusted to bring success for the organization. Also, it must be addressed
that the unethical practices will be considered and reviewed to not happen again. However, if the
ethical violation would cause a critical problem for the organization, there is an option of ending
its partnership with that partnering company, and deciding of partnering with another company
after knowing the multinational organizations own ethical standards (Our Community, 2018).
In order for the leader to avoid the damage that is caused by the poor publicity, he/she
must recognize the concepts of ethical relativism and ethical normativism. Ethical relativism
means that a company needs to follow the standards and norms of the other countries when
working internationally. Whereas, ethical normativism means the universal ethical behavioral
standards that the international organizations need to follow. When the multinational
organization and its partners are aware of the universal standards, they can avoid the unethical
practices or the impact of cultural differences. Hence, the multinational organization can be

Consumer goodwill is highly essential to business success and cannot be compared to
the monetary gains from a partnership with another company. There are often several institutions
to choose from while entering into a partnership, and one of
the factors in consideration while making such a choice is often
the goodwill available from such business relations (Lee,
2011). Consequently, the ethical question herein presented would require that the partnering com
the partnership as an effort to maintain its positive relations with consumers. Otherwise, continui
ng business with the company facing allegations of unethical behavior would have a negative im
pact on the level of trust in
the business and would end up having an adverse effect on sales and consumer relations.
Ethical values may vary from one culture to another, but there exists a primary baseline acr
oss all cultures which determines what is appropriate across the board. In
the presented case, allegations of human trafficking present a practice which would be
inappropriate in any society irrespective of the culture in question. Notably, the legal position
of the practice in the home country of the business infers
that there are limited chances of change within the company, as there
is minimal risk of prosecution. Ultimately, such a reputation would end up hurting business partn
ers as the society could wrongly view them as being in cahoots with the unethical company. In
this respect, terminating the partnership would be effective enough since
it prevents such aftermath, and leaves the organization with the ability
to seek partnerships elsewhere, with companies whose reputation meets
the local standards and values of both the company and its consumers.
