REALISM AND IDEALISM
Realism and Idealism
Introduction
Realism is a term that tends to refer to a more practical and authentic view of the
situation at hand. Idealism, on the other hand, means envisioning or seeing things in a perfect or
ideal manner. The two models can be considered different on their perspectives; with realism
focusing on ‘what is’ while idealism is focusing on ‘what could be.’ In philosophical view,
idealism is a model that depicts that the reality is formed by diverse ideas and thoughts.
Contrary, realism emphases on the fact that reality has entire existence free from our
consciousness, ideas, and thoughts.
Stereotypically, realists are often seen as individuals with cool ideas who carefully
measure their many options before making any critical decision. Following these, realists are
believed to make more practical and safer choices compared to idealists. Idealists may focus on
making more risky decisions. The two concept also have a great impact on how people handle
failure or success in their lives. An idealist who is more focused on the greater good will be less
affected by setbacks compared to a realist. Although, it is not sensible and very unhealthy to live
in a world of unachievable goals and fantasy. An idealist may set goals that are nearly impossible
or impossible to achieve. A realist is not a person who rush for success but instead plans right
and pursue set goals and objectives successfully (Tomuschat, 2014).
Summary on a comparison between realism and idealism
Based on decision making, idealists may have haughty ambitions that lack focus and
clarity that makes them a reality in an attainable manner. While realists are more thorough and
goal-oriented towards making their goals and objectives a success. Idealists have a habit of being

positive on how they perceive things and carry out tasks as compared to realists. Realism makes
an individual to view a situation the way it is without involving explicit emotions onto the
matter. Idealism, on the other hand, makes a person to view things in a more hopeful manner and
attempts to modify the situation through applying personal ideas.
Political realism and idealism
In the political world, political realism is seen as a way of handling political situations as
they depicts in reality while political idealism is handling politics as an ideal. Over the years,
many political viewers have debated whether individuals are naturally good or naturally flawed.
Philosophers believes that when a person sees things based on their external five senses, then
they are realists. But when an individual makes decisions based on moral virtues, sentiments and
ideas inclusive of impressions from internal senses, that person is an idealist. Political realism is
embedded in observations of the world materials while political idealism is embedded on
thoughts and ideas (Galston, 2010).
There are several ways that idealism and realism can be compared and every individual
who embraces the two concepts realizes that having each can help in making a good decision. In
politics, there is dire need to use both of them to come up with a better solution to every
problem. Politicians must be able to understand idealism and realism to be able to extend their
empathy to others. Career politicians tend to understand both concepts and thus have a history of
best ideas and choices. Machiavelli and Alinsky argue that political rulers need to embrace a
criminal virtue and have the knowledge that the ends can sometimes justify the means.
Similarly, it can be argued that the system of idealists have led to more recent problems on
humanity, not because they are less upright but the fact that perception of absolutism does not
see to align with areas of human nature,

Recent events in Ukraine have portrayed that the international relations are now a popular
topic around the globe. In the past, the League of Nations was based on idealism; the league was
initially created to ensure that the weak were protected and that the Second World War was
prevented from happening. Although asking Germany to repay all its debts was idealistic and led
to the Second World War. Currently, Northeast Asia’s view on North Korea nuclear weapons is
based on realism perspective (Griffiths, 2013). Realism is an approach used in international
relations to depict a distinctive and diverse style of analysis. Personally, realism best fits my
viewpoint on politics and international relations because the concept gives a platform and allows
individuals to make decisions based on the cause of action and reality.
