Transcript of the video We are now ready to talk about one final type of design. The design of one of the most critical aspects of any screen based resource. The content and information that the resource provides. The terms content writing and information design may be used interchangeably. Alternatively, you may find that content writing, often called web writing when talking specifically about web content, more often carries an expectation of the creation of words while information design is used more generally to refer to the creation of content that goes beyond just the words. For the purposes of this video, we will refer to everything as information design. Information design is focused on making sure that content can be consumed as intended. By understanding who is going to see the content and how they are going to use the content, an information designer makes sure to create content that meets these users’ needs. As an information designer, you will need to overlay an understanding of users with the needs of stakeholders and produce content that is usable and useful but also meets required business goals. You may be expert in a particular industry and can generate content based on knowledge or expertise. More likely however, you will gather information from subject matter experts possibly by interviewing them or perhaps by reviewing a draft of something they produced and then editing and rewriting it to tailor it to a particular medium and for a particular audience group. You will need to make sure that content is not only user friendly and written in plain language but also meets business goals and perhaps legal constraints that may be required in a given industry. While it’s easy to think about content creation as the writing of words, an information designer may also make sure that pictures and illustrations supplied truly provide users with added value and meaning. You may choose to display information as a chart or a graph or as an info graphic. You don’t necessarily create these graphical displays but can channel the skills of various other experts to create these alternative types of content. Like others in the company, you may need to adhere to a corporate style guide that addresses how content should be developed and published. You may also be responsible for maintenance of the style guide or even for creating a corporate style guide from scratch. Now let’s turn our attention to another type of content creator, the technical communicator, often called a technical writer. The technical writer is charged with the task of making sure that important technical information is understood by the intended audience groups. The technical writer functions as a very specific kind of content writer, someone who can understand enough from developers or engineers about the technical ins and outs of the website, application or product and then translate that understanding from the more technical source into user friendly explanations. The technical information may come in the form of screen based help or could be hard copy or electronic documentation that is used to help consumers understand more about software or physical products. While some of what you produce as a technical writer could be long and descriptive, it could also include just in time help texts such as error messages. You would need to make sure that users understand errors and have enough information to successfully recover. In addition, creating elements such as labels and tool tips, may also be part of your job. Like an information designer, you may also produce more than just words and may integrate screenshots, illustrations or even videos as well.
