Discussion: Seminar Reflection Discussion – Joseph
The Relation of Research and Presented Content to Doctoral Study
The seminar has enhanced my understanding of information technology (IT) for
competitive advantage. The research and content presented in this course did relate to my
Doctoral Study, and I have gained so much from the annotated bibliographies (ABs), which
have enriched my understanding of information technology. In understanding what
information technology is, we must first become familiar with the concept of information
technology. During the last seven weeks, through the synthesis of the key themes and
concepts of information technology, I am better equipped to apply what I have learned in this
class to my Doctoral Study, which is about the barriers of e-commerce adoption, by small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana. A common thread among researchers in
developing countries is that e-commerce is a promising application of information technology
in which parties interact electronically to perform one or more business functionalities
depending on their contextual resources and constraints (Boateng, Heeks, Molla, & Hinson,
2008). Information technology plays a critical role in the development of SMEs and giving it
a competitive advantage over its rivals in the market (Prajogo, 2016).
Confirmed Approach to Individual Research
Recent activities in the technology and corporate worlds inform us that the world is
going through rapid changes and information technology can bring about desirable
competitive advantage (Brown & Anthony, 2011). During the seven weeks of this class, I
had the opportunity of preparing many annotated bibliographies that covered information
technology, innovative approaches and tools, and the emerging topics in information
technology. This seminar enables me to evaluate the methods of data collection, research
statistics employed, and the overall research designs by the authors. It has shaped and
enlightened my approach to research especially about the generalizability of the research. I
intend to use a qualitative research method in my Doctoral Study, and the ABs I have
prepared gave me an in-depth understanding of my chosen research method to know if it will
address my research topic. Qualitative work requires reflection on the part of researchers,
both before and during the research process, as a way of providing context and understanding
for readers (Sutton & Austin, 2015). The literature in this seminar has reinforced my
understanding of what qualitative study seeks to convey especially by understanding the
importance of collecting qualitative data creatively. Some of the literature evaluated for the
annotated bibliographies in this seminar also included the quantitative and the mixed methods
but my focus was in the qualitative articles.
Exposure to New Sources of Data
The ability to identify the gaps in the literature is a gain from the seminar because it
would assist me to prepare the background of the problem for my Doctoral Study and in the
building of my literature review. In this seminar also the foundational theories, current
research, and trends in information technology concepts were explored. I would be able to
explore the theories that support the adoption of e-commerce by SMEs, the current research,
the trends, and the innovations. I have also gained a strong sense of the issues and the
potential areas for further investigation in the field of information technology. Firms on the
verge of becoming obsolete embrace information technology concepts (Eggers & Kaul,
2016). For example, Uber does not have any cars to operate the taxi business, but it takes
advantage of the emergent technology and brings a novel way of linking taxi owners with
prospective clients (Nagy, Schuessler, & Dubinsky, 2016).
A Global Change Agent
As a global change agent in light of the topics covered in this seminar course, I would
encourage the adoption of big data analytics and cloud computing. From the seminar course,
I am capable, as an agent of positive social change to influence my organizational systems
such that they adopt the latest emerging IT concepts for competitive advantage.
Unemployment is one of the issues that society is struggling to contain, and IT concepts
should play an important role in opening up opportunities that may be used by individuals to
get incomes. Performance will be dependent on how well firms can incorporate IT concepts
into their systems (Prajogo, 2016). The best way forward for everyone in the business world
is to admit that the race of technology will not stop any soon, and thus the only way to beat it
is to embrace IT concepts that take full advantage of any new way of doing things (Sinfield &
Solis, 2016). As a change agent, I see myself encouraging people to use the Internet because
it is very comfortable to use by almost everybody who wants to use it to search for
information and it is a cheaper way of getting a lot of information.

Does the research and content presented in this course inform or relate to your
individual Doctoral Study? What research methods or strategic analysis approaches
might be useful in answering the questions that you have posed? Justin
The level of research and the content exposure during this course is beneficial to my
development as a scholarly researcher. The content presented in this course was well
informed as it relates to my specialization: global and supply chain management, which
focuses on addressing the management challenges facing managers when implementing
technology-based tools/systems for their supply chain. The course content confirms that firms
are leveraging information technology (IT), within their global supply chains, because it
enables them to operate more effectively and create or maintain their competitive advantage
(Avittathur, & Jayaram, 2016).
Consider the articles that you’ve read, and evaluate how the methods of data collection,
research statistics employed, and overall research designs have enlightened your
individual approach to research. Is there anything about your approach to your
individual research that the literature in this seminar has reinforced or confirmed?
The research methods used in most of the materials were qualitative semi structured
multi case studies. This helped me to decide on which method to use for my case study
because it would capture real-life situations, identify significant events, explore
contemporary and answer questions (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2015). The qualitative
semi structured multi case study will help me to get answers from participants on which
strategies they have implemented within their organizations. More specifically, qualitative
method is most appropriate because global supply chain management involves planning how
the entire supply chain will function as an integrated whole, with the aim of generating an
optimum level of customer service while being as cost-efficient as possible. Qualitative
research can help researchers to access the thoughts and feelings of research participants,
which can enable development of an understanding of the meaning that people ascribe to
their experiences (Morse, 2015).
Were you exposed to any new sources of data that will be useful in your Doctoral
Study? Be specific in your answer.
The class material has exposed me to some new material that includes the role IT
plays in a company’s supply chain (Flynn,2016). I also learned that the IT can be used by
businesses to understand to overcome uncertainties and to encourage supply chain
coordination (Bi, 2017). Managers can create or maintain a competitive advantage by
leveraging IT within their supply chain.
How do you view yourself as a global change agent in light of the topics covered in this
seminar course?
Successful supply chains rely on strong leaders who can spur top performance from
those around them. Leaders contribute their own talents, interests, styles, and goals to help
their companies reach their full potential. As a change agent, I would help groups build
bridges of trust and understanding, reduce the mystery of who they are for one another, and
establish a connection that opens up a new possibility for shared accomplishment. Sokol
(2014) noted that organizational leaders that seek to create change must find stability and be
open to exploring new methods. When initiated properly, being open to change can help to
expose new methods for profitability and becoming more socially responsible. As a
proponent for change, the information on corporate social responsibility provided great
details and examples of the creativity of several multinational corporations. I seek to create
opportunities for change and improvement for not only my organization, but globally. My
study on IT change in the supply chain will explore successful strategies that that managers
use to implement supply chain related IT change initiatives that will improve productivity
and employee morale.
