THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS- A SOCIAL PROBLEM THAT NEEDS A
HUMANITARIAN SOLUTION
The War in Syria: How It All Began
The current war in Syria is by far, the longest and deadliest in the history of the
Arab spring. For 7 years and one month, the conflict in Syria has claimed around 435,000
lives, the worst in any war, over the last decade (Syria and the Statistics of War – Opacity Medium, 2018).
Before the war, Syria was among one of the most promising Arab countries. It has
an estimated 1200 million barrels of oil reservoirs. Socially, Syria was one of the most
tolerant countries in the Arab Peninsula. It had the highest Christian population in any Arab
country (10%) and many more non-Muslim minority groups. The country was once one of
the most westernized in Arab. The Sharia Law was not constitutional, despite its majority
Sunni population. Women in Syria could own property, go to school and run businesses,
something other Arab countries do not allow. Indeed, the potential of Syria as a major social
and economic block in the Arab Peninsula was limitless (Syria and the Statistics of War –
Opacity -Medium, 2018).
The socio-economic achievements in the Arab nation were however cut short on
March 16th 2011 when 15 boys were detained in Syria for writing graffiti in support of the
ongoing Arab uprising in Egypt and Tunisia. The breaking point of the nation was the death
of one of the boys, a 13-year old, succumbed to the injuries sustained during his torture and
detention.
This resulted in massive protests the following day. Hundreds of thousands of
people protested in anger. Government forces killed them in the hundreds for days. This

resulted in a Sunni faction of the Syrian army to defect from the country’s army and declared
war on Bashar Al-Assad, the country’s Alawi President (Syria and the Statistics of War –
Opacity -Medium, 2018).
The severity of the refugee crisis
The different factions that have joined in the Syrian crisis have only escalated the
war. Besides the 435,000-people killed in the Syrian conflict so far, it is estimated that more
than half of the country’s pre-war population has been displaced. To be specific, 13.5 million
people out of 22 million people are currently displaced and need humanitarian assistance. By
humanitarian terms, millions of women, children and the elderly are homeless. They lack the
most necessities: food water and clothing (Syria and the Statistics of War – Opacity Medium, 2018). However, the worst part of this situation is the harsh treatment from the
people these refugees seek help from. They are subject to discriminatory treatment on the
excuse of being a possible ‘security threat’.
While there has been an increase in the frequency and number of terrorist attacks
on European soil since the conflict began in Syria, this cannot be entirely blamed on the
people trying to flee the effects of the conflict. The harsh treatment of refugees from Syria in
Europe makes the humanitarian situation worse. The negligence and profiling of the refuges
trying to make something of their lives in the wake of conflict is worsening the hostility
between the Sunni-Islamic world and the West. Although European countries claim to be
doing their best to solve the Syrian refugee crisis, they are clearly not doing enough from a
humanitarian point of view. Fewer restrictions to integration of refugees in Europe and

making refugee camps more habitable is the ultimate solution to the Syrian refugee crisis and
hostility between the Islam and western world.
The role of European governments in the Syrian Refugee Crisis
As already stated, the Western governments are rather negligent in the way they
handle the Syrian refugee crisis. They approach the situation in Syria with excessive caution.
They fail to understand and appreciate the fact that most people escaping the conflict in Syria
do so because they do not have any alternative. Their businesses have been destroyed,
children cannot go to school, farmers cannot grow food and feed the nation. Only death and
carnage awaits them, in case they decide to return to Syria (Coen, 2015).
European countries should develop effective ways of sieving through the refugee
population seeping through, not barring them entirely. Although there is a small element of
chaff in the otherwise majorly grain population getting to Europe from the Syria, it should
not be used as a scapegoat in the handling of the humanitarian crisis due to the conflict in
Syria. The vast resources the governments have at their disposal should be used to boost
intelligence, and help the suffering refugee population (Coen, 2015).
What Europe is Doing Wrong
Derek McDougal tries to explain the rather unorthodox way in which Europe,
more so the Austrian government is dealing with the increase in refugees seeking safety and
stability from Syria.
Austria, has in the recent past, made significant discriminating efforts to stop
refugees seeking asylum from the conflict in Syria from getting into the country. Theirs is a

HUMANITARIAN SOLUTION
blatant inhumane treatment of the victims of the conflict. There are reports of several
instances where refugees are detained in security centers in Papua New Guinea. The Austrian
Government defends these actions by stating it is a necessary security precaution in dealing
with the potential threats to security a surge of refugees from the war-torn area pose.
This strict and discriminatory methodology in the handling of refugees in the
country has led to the worsening of the humanitarian crisis in Austrian refugee camps. People
fleeing the conflict in Syria are subjected to harsh living conditions in make shift tents and
blankets. The Austrians forget that mothers, the elderly and children are the most affected by
the war. Austria and other European countries need to be more tolerant and accepting to the
people living in Syria. Profiling and detention of the refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria
only makes the situation worse (McDougal, 2016).
The Hidden benefits of Integrating Refugees in the Social Framework of
Europe
Although there are instances where the refugee crisis has blotted the security
situation in some of the countries that accept refugees, the overall effect of integrating the
refugees is an underlying and unseen benefit in the social framework of the global society.
The silently tainted relationship between the West and the Islamic world could be
made better by the interaction between the two social groups brought about by the integration
of Muslim refugees from the war-torn nation. The amalgamation of the cultures would
translate to a better understanding of the difference between the two cultures. A better
understanding will help to bridge the gap created by terrorist activities and islamophobia. It is
worth noting, however, that this understanding might take some time to get accustomed to.
6
THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS- A SOCIAL PROBLEM THAT NEEDS A
HUMANITARIAN SOLUTION
The long run benefits of the same should, however, be enough incentive to pursue and effect
this amalgamation of cultures (Turculet, 2017).
The Syrian Conflict- Syrians are Not Entirely to Blame
In as much as the refugee crisis in Syria largely depends on how European
countries react, the solution to the crisis does not entirely depend on Europe. It is quite
evident that the large number of people fleeing the conflict in Syria cannot be fully
amalgamated in Europe.
The best cure for the refugee crisis in Syria is the end of the war in Syria. The war
in Syria, and other parts of the Arab Peninsula are a knee jerk reaction to injustices
committed to minority groups (Saiya, 2016).
In Syria, for example, the Alawi sect-led administration has been historically
discriminating to the Sunni population. This discrimination started with Assad’s predecessor,
his father against the Sunnis. Their control of the military is what makes Sunni a political
minority in the region. The killing of the teenage Sunni boys that sparked the revolution in
the first place is a culmination of the social frustrations the Sunnis have against the Alawi
regime.
The Syrian conflict can only be corrected if these injustices are resolved. This,
however, does not necessarily translate to bowing down to the will of terrorists. It means the
world should be fair enough to correct these injustices. These corrections can only be done
through the west (Saiya, 2016).
Conclusion

THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS- A SOCIAL PROBLEM THAT NEEDS A
HUMANITARIAN SOLUTION
Addressing the Syrian refugee crisis should be a matter of urgency, for the entire
world. The exposure I continuously get from working with the refugees drives the passion
with which this paper is written. Indeed, women, children and the elderly are the most
affected by the power struggles between the warring parties in Syria. They are subjected to
harsh life-threatening living conditions with religious profiling adding insult to injury.
Humanity owes these people better treatment and living conditions. World leaders owe these
people a long-overdue solution to the conflict in Syria.
