Description
Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) is one of the
largest international petroleum and natural gas
exploration and production companies in the world.
Its principal business is energy, involving exploration
for and production of crude oil and natural gas; the
manufacture of petroleum products; and the
transportation and sale of crude oil, natural gas and
petroleum products. The company has hundreds of
affiliates, many with names that include ExxonMobil,
Esso, Exxon, XTO or Mobil. Overall, the firm divides its
business units into three areas: upstream,
downstream and chemical. The upstream business
focuses on conventional oil, heavy oil, shale gas,
deepwater, liquefied natural gas (LNG), Arctic and
sour gas projects. The downstream business is
concerned with refining crude oil and other
feedstocks into fuels, lubricants and other chemicals
and delivering it to customers through a global
distributor network. The chemical business is focused
on the production of olefins, such as ethylene and
propylene, and polyolefins, such as polyethylene and
polypropylene. In addition, it manufactures specialty
chemicals for use in water treatment, coatings,
lubricants and oil drilling fluids. In late-2017, the firm
signed production sharing contracts with the
government of Mauritania for three deepwater
offshore blocks; and acquired a 25% stake in
Mozambique’s gas-rich Area 4 block from Eni and
assume responsibility for midstream operations. In
January 2018, ExxonMobil signed a petroleum
agreement with the government of Ghana to acquire
exploration and production rights for the Deepwater
Cape Three Points block, with exploration activities,
including acquisition of seismic data and analysis,
expected to begin by year’s end.
