MGMT-535 EXAM #2 (ETHICS) (SPRING 2018)
You may use your text-book and/or any other non-human source. If you quote
from or otherwise rely upon sources for ideas or concepts (outside your
textbook), please ensure you provide proper attribution. You may not work
with or communicate with other students or consult with or discuss the
problems with any living person. All work must be your own. Each question is
of EQUAL VALUE. Please do NOT repeat/summarize the facts presented in your
answers.
YOU MUST ANSWER QUESTION #1 (BELOW) (100 POINTS)
THEN ANSWER ANY TWO MORE QUESTIONS FROM #2-#7. (50 POINTS EACH)
QUESTION #1 (ALL STUDENTS MUST ANSWER)
Draft a 400-500 word essay on the following topic:
Why I do/do not believe *(pick one!) that ethics in business are important to me
and to my personal success.
In your response, you must incorporate at least THREE (3) basic/broad reasons
that form a basis for your opinion. Please ensure that your essay incorporates
relevant examples from current (or past) global, national, or local business
environment that serve to underpin/support you opinions.

QUESTION #2
Consider some of the marketing practices that we discussed in class (i.e. Nestle Baby Formula,
Starbucks, etc.). Without using any product or service we have already discussed in class
this semester, select any OTHER currently available product or service being marketed in what
YOU feel is an unethical manner. Discuss what factors within the marketing mix need to be
modified or terminated. Are there other issues or decisional factors that need to be addressed?
Are there similar products or services utilizing marketing practices that might serve as exemplars
(or not)? Make sure you address how any specific marketing strategy violates your own ethical
principles.
QUESTION #3
Most business ethics philosophies center on one of three principles: the Golden Rule,
Enlightened Self-Interest (in some form), and Utilitarianism. All three are based upon normal
social and/or contractual interactions between business persons (people) and/or other business
interests (i.e. corporations, governments, as well as other stake-holders). The most important
business social exchanges are usually among and between stockholders, managers, employees,
and (then) consumers. Governments also experience consequences from what businesses do (or
do not do) and may react to interest groups, voters, and other political entities. Pick any major
and/or dominant multinational corporation such as Amazon, or Uber. Discuss how does/has your
selected company (historically) respond(ed) to inappropriate or illegal conduct? Integrating the
three ethical principles described above, briefly, but SPECIFCALLY discuss the moral/ethical
responsibility of your company for inappropriate behavior when it occurs in the supply chain,
marketing, manufacturing, etc.
QUESTION #4
Congratulations, you have just been hired as the CRO for ACME Incorporated. ACME has been
one of the fastest growing IT Consulting Firms in the United States and is preparing an IPO for
next year. In less than ten years, ACME has grown from three employees working from a condo
into a Fortune 5000-sized business employing 2500 salaried and hourly workers working in
eleven foreign countries (so far). For whatever reason, ACME has done reasonably well without
a formal “ethics code.” You have been brought aboard to draft and implement such a
document/policy. Prepare a short memo with a 10-point “bullet list” summarizing what will be
IN the code as well as HOW it should be implemented and enforced.
QUESTION #5
Based upon your background and experience in multi-national organizations, outsourcing, and
competing in the global marketplace, ABM Inc. hires you to be lead project-manager for its new
electrical hand-tool manufacturing facility (factory) in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is an extremely
poor country, but has experienced modest growth due to exports or low labor cost textiles and
other manufactured goods. Corruption is a major factor in daily life and also dampens investor
confidence and foreign capital. 85% of the population lives well below the poverty line. The
President of ABM Inc. already knows you are fully capable of building and managing a start-up
manufacturing facility, but she wants you to explain to the Board of Directors you are going to
ensure ABM Inc. will be viewed as a “good neighbor and business partner” by the people in
Bangladesh. After researching a bit, select a suitable factory LOCATION in Bangladesh (BUT
write your answer based upon the assumption that the factory location/city has ALREADY been
selected before you assumed your duties). After determining a suitable factory location, draft a
memorandum to the president of ABM Inc. outlining your short and long-range planning to
accomplish her specific ethical goals to enhance ABM’s corporate image both in Bangladesh,
but also in the USA. Make sure you discuss specific standards and outcomes you hope to
achieve.
QUESTION #6
You and a couple of other junior-executives recently returned from a business trip to New York
with the CEO of the company where you are employed, ACME Inc. One evening, you entered
the hotel bar to grab a cup of free coffee and saw your CEO at a table with a woman you know is
a prostitute. You know this because she propositioned you the previous evening and you turned
her down. As you were getting your coffee, you saw the CEO and the woman leave the bar and
get on the elevator together which stopped at the 14th floor (Top floor/Executive Suites). ACME
is a publicly-traded (Fortune 500) company. The CEO is married with children. You have met
and are on a “first-name” basis with his wife, Judy. In fact, you just spoke with Judy at a dinner
party hosted at the CEO’s home just one week before the business trip. The CEO is a dynamic
leader and is responsible for keeping ACME out of Chapter II Bankruptcy (three years ago). He
is very popular with both employees and management. Under his leadership, ACME stock has
gone up from $7 to $19 dollars per share.
What, if anything, should you do?
Problem #7
ABC Pharmaceuticals Inc. markets a multi-vitamin which is essentially the same ingredients as a
Children’s One-A-Day or “Flintstone’s” children’s vitamins with a few additional (harmless)
natural minerals and fiber. The product is called TallMax.™ TallMax™ is almost exclusively
marketed on morning and afternoon AM Radio programs during commuting hours and when
kids are being taken or driven home from school by their parents. An annual supply of
TallMax™ nutritional supplement costs over $245.00 a year (plus $16.00 in “shipping and
handling”) for a one-year’s supply of 365 tablets. More typical children’s vitamins such as
Children’s One-A-Day brand cost less than $12.00 dollars for a large bottle of 200 tablets. The
typical TallMax™ radio commercial runs something like this:
•
Female “Mommy” sounding radio voice #1: I’m worried about my little Judy, she’s the
shortest girl in her 3rd grade class.
•
Male “Daddy” sounding voice #2: Yeah, my Davey doesn’t seem to be growing as tall as
the other kids. I wish there was a way for him to start catching up.
•
Radio Announcer Voice #3: Haven’t you folks heard about TallMax™? TallMax™ is
the safest height-enhancing supplement on the market. Our product is exclusively
designed to target our consumers at their maximum growth stage (kids from age 12 to
young adults of 25 or below). Our proprietary, trademark patent-pending formula is a
mixture of herbal, oriental and western supplements that gives kids the required
balance of essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids that promotes rapid heightgrowth while boosting the immune system to the maximum extent possible.
•
Male “Daddy” sounding voice #2: Wow, that sounds great, I’m definitely going to
order some TallMax™.
•
“Mommy” sounding radio voice #1: How can I get some TallMax™ for my Judy?
•
Radio Announcer Voice #3: Just call 1-800-TallMax for your 6 month supply. For
greatest potential height enhancement, ask the operator about our discount for a
one year supply. Call 1-800-TallMax right now to give your boy or girl every
opportunity to achieve his or her maximum growth, do it today, right now, you will
be glad you did and so will your child!
QUESTION: Is TallMax™ an “Ethical” Product? Discuss. Make sure your answer addresses
whether or not the radio-marketing strategy specifically violates any of your own ethical
principles. You may also choose to incorporate any of the various Ethical Problem-Solving
Models (i.e. 5-step, Potter Box, 8-Step/Murphy/Murphy, etc.) into your analysis if you wish to
aid in clarity, organization, or persuasion.
EXAM IS DUE IN HARD-COPY ON APRIL 20 IN CLASS.
