Vision Selfie
If the name of the wars is social media networks these days, then a “selfie” is a major
soldier in that war. The word “selfie” found its way to the dictionary in 2013 when the online
version of Oxford Dictionary accepted it as a new word in the English language. Also, the defined
as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam
and uploaded to a social media website.
How social media can affect on languages, relations, and daily-life which result loss of
privacy, and the creation of artificial personalities? I collected 33 participants to involve in the
survey. There are 18.2% of participants are women and 81.8% are men. 60.6% participants are
between 25-34 years old only 3% of them don’t have smart phone. The average of hours that spend
daily on phones are 4-6 hours. 30.1 % of participants spend their time on social media such as
Facebook, twitter, and Instagram while 18.1% of them spend their time on taking photos and share
it using social media. Moreover 63.6 % of them share approximately 1-5 photos daily using social
media. The average of photos that in participants’ phone are 3000 pictures while the average of
selfie that in participants’ phone are 200 pictures because 42.4% of them don’t like take selfie.
The significance of study shows that there is a positive relationship between number of
photos on the phone and posting photos on social media daily which means when the number of
photos increase, the posting times on social media will increase. Also, the study shows that there
is negative relationship between the ages and number of photos and hours that spend on the phones.
Which means when the individual become older, he/she will spend less on the phones and doesn’t
take pictures frequently.
Our relationship taking selfies has become an addiction, all thanks to the social media
which plays a major role in our selfie-obsessed culture. According to some estimates in 2014, there
were more than 17 million selfies uploaded to social media each week, but Google’s figures sugge
quantitativest the cult of selfie taking has grown even further, and we continue to upload and share
all day. Isn’t it true?
I reading the study shows in 2012, Google searches for “selfie” took off, and the hashtag
#selfie has grown by more than 200 percent since January 2013. Today, more than 55 million posts
on Instagram are labeled with the hashtag, and the number of #Selfies and #Selfiesunday posts are
above 331 million and 9 million.

Social media and selfies have impacted the lives of many people of all races, gender and
ages. These are as a result of the advancement of technology (Zarrella, 2009). Some of the social
media platforms are Facebook, Instagram, Snap-Chat and Twitter. People post their pictures and
selfies to get approval from their peers. It is also used as a platform for updating fellow peer groups
the newest trends and fashions. In today’s world, the use of mobile cameras and social media on
selfies has made most of the teenagers and adolescents obsessed.

than men. In conjunction, with this, the study seeks to research on the phenomenon of Saudi
Women.” why Saudi women” The problem statement will be backed up by the previous studies
on how social media has affected interrelations between families, colleagues and friends in Saudi
Arabia.
The following objectives will guide the study. For instance, this will constitute of elements
of studies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The second objective will be to determine
how “yes” the use of social media has affected psycho-social variables. For instance, this will
constitute of elements of studies such as relationships. The relationships may involve family
friends and co-workers. The third objective of this study will be to determine the extent the social
media has affected the level of addictiveness to their phones and gadgets among the Saudi women.
“Why do Saudi women take selfie? or how have selfie impacted Saudi women’s
relationships?” For instance, this will constitute of elements of study such as poor time
management, unproductivity and obsession. The last objective will be to determine the how the
use of social media and selfies has impacted on the mood in Saudi Arabia women concerning their
lives. The elements of this objective will be their studies, career and personal development.
Data collected will be primary data. The researcher will determine quantitative methods
of data collection targeting Saudi Women through non-random sampling.
The data collected will be researched using descriptive research design. The problem is
well defined, and the researcher is conversant with the problem statement (Bernard, 2013). This
design describes behavior that the researcher cannot control. The researcher will always report the
results as depicted in the study. The data will be analyzed using descriptive forms of percentages
and frequencies to achieve accuracy in the presentation.
Scholars and academicians will use the significance of the study as a source of information
on other research topics in the social media platform. Mostly, scholars in the field of
communication, information technology and also psychology and counselling.
This study applies to communication as a form of reference on the new trends in
technology involving the exchange of information. Communication globally has been made easier
by the use of mobile phones and gadgets. One can send information to someone who is overseas
with a blink of an eye. This has led to the effect of selfie-taking and sending them online to convey
a certain message to the receiver. This makes conversations more electronic and reliable than the
past days. So, I want to know whether selfie have effect on Saudi women lives.

The author of the article, Abidin, is discussing the importance of Instagram and social
media platforms and apps in selling selfies as a form of business platform. The author and the
other friends have a publishing connection where they print Instagram photos marketing products
such as beverages and other products such as handbags attire, bracelets and also the wedding,
engagement and friendship silver rings. They have minimum followers of around 50,000
followers in the Instagram where they do their marketing in Singapore across borders extending

The author, Bar illustrated the empowerment of Saudi women and their knowledge and

empowerment is brought about by the technological education models as compared with Japan.
Having the use and empowerment of selfies and control over social media gives the Saudi
women a feeling of empowerment and acknowledgement. The author tries to illustrate the
differences that had been in the past and modern Saudi woman as far as technology is concerned.
He also explains how Saudi women are enthusiastic about taking selfies and their use compared
to Japan women through studies done in higher institutions.
Through the article, the author can bring about the self-awareness and concept of the
Saudi women who have acknowledged the need to be empowered. Most women in tertiary
institutions from Saudi have been able to cope with the growing technology and use the social
media to their advantage.

done in Saudi Arabia in the capital Riyadh. He can explore the precise usage of technologies by
the women in Saudi. He explains how the female gender in Saudi has been trampled on by the
social, cultural and religious norms. He can bring out a clear picture of how the Saudi woman is
empowered “in what ways” to use cell phones. He also expounds how she can use various apps

Selfies are widely known due to their popularity in the social networking activities. It
involves the taking of pictures by oneself with an object, a family friend, family or a pet or even
with a child (Alyedreessy, Helsdingen & Al-Sobaihi, 2017). This depends on what the selfie
taker will prioritize. Nowadays, in today world due to the advanced technology selfies are taken
using smart phones, tablets, digital cameras or even webcams.
In Saudi Arabia, women have not been left behind in the uses of selfies in their daily
lives. Due to the advanced technology, the access to selfies has been made possible to every
young and senior woman in the Middle East (Abidin, 2014). All the same, the use of selfies has
impacted their lives differently. This includes their social life and relationships. Some of the
effects of selfies to the Saudi women in regards to their relationship are discussed as below.
a) Less attachment to family time
In most cases, it is evident that selfies-taking might be obsessive if not regulated. This is
brought by the fact that one is carrying her phone wherever they go. These become their centres
of attention and consequently develop an eccentric behaviour (Bar, 2016). This obsession makes
it hard to socialize with their family members and friends. The use of selfies is known to have
caused loneliness to the users and the closest people of the obsessed young woman. The
emotional detachment and solitude are brought by this eccentric attitude thus creating a selfabsorbed personality which grows gradually. Some do even take selfies when doing anything, for
instance, eating, shopping, social gatherings, cooking and walking or driving on a busy traffic
road.
b) Affects romantic relationship
The relationship between two lovers or a romantic relationship can be affected by the use
of specifying. This may deter the effectiveness of social media for the betterment of a
relationship.
Couples who are in love keep posting for selfies which makes their bond strong about the
creation of memories of their loving moments. This has affected the romantic relationships
positively by creating a vibrant and exciting relationship. On the other had the opposite sex may
keep posing for selfies which could make him/her unconformable if the pictures go viral. This
causes disagreements between couples because one may take a selfie and caption in a way the
other party would not appreciate or may feel offended. This heated arguments and disagreements
might lead to break ups (Abidin, 2014). For instance, a selfie taken while partners happen to be
in a compromising state may bring conflict if it is posted without either party’s consent.
c) Lack of privacy.
The use of privacy has led to overexposure of women’s social life. This is caused by the
posting of everyday duties and undertakings one is going to accomplish. This involves some
personal issues that may not need to be overly exposed or mentioned to the public. The obsessed
women in Saudi with the selfie-taking have led to making them lack a personal life. They also
pose about their past current or the potential romantic relationships (Alyedreessy, Helsdingen &
Al-Sobaihi, 2017). This makes them an easy target for their enemies because they do not keep a
private life. Some Saudi women go to an extra mile of taking even the life videos on Instagram
every day telling people about the vacations and social activities they are undertaking which may
not be necessary. The study has shown that most of this woman who lives their lives in social
media are affected by lack of self-worth and esteem thus seeking approval, especially from men.
d) Social image
The use of selfies can sometimes create or break a social image for Saudi women. This
has affected their reputation or relationships that they encounter from then henceforth.
Sometimes when parents or spouses or even other male gender see the kind of selfies, a woman
is posing on leads to a form of judgement (Bourdeloie, Silveri & Houmair, 2014). For instance,
when a woman poses marketing her business or even talking about her family in a positive way
the society is likely to embrace her with dignity and social respect.
On the other hand, when a woman poses with her pouting mouth and her tongue out of
her mouth or even showing off her cleavage the picture or the image she is portraying with lead
to instant judgments too all the same. This may make the male gender view her as a sexual object
or as a sexual idol (Caidi, Beazley & Marquez,2018). This has affected the women’s relationship
across Saudi because of the reputation they display or the images they depict inform of life.
e) Seeking approval for their newborn babies
In this digital era, women in Saudi have digitized their way of making her popular in the
internet using the selfies of her kid or newborn. This has affected the relationship between
mother and child because the mother is busy seeking approval other than taking care of the baby.
Some newborn has face book, Instagram, twitter snap chat accounts even as old as one month
(Caidi, Beazley & Marquez,2018). The children being exposed to the social platform has led to
overreliance of likes and comments which may reflect on the mother’s way of bringing up the
kid. On the same positive and negative comments has a way of reaching the kid through her
mother’s reactions.
On the same when the kid comments are positive and applauding, the mother and the
father of the kid are likely to have high esteem due to the approval of their peers (Bourdeloie,
Silveri & Houmair, 2014). Nevertheless, it may turn out the other way. For instance, if someone
comments negative about a post of a newborn baby or dislikes, this may cause poor judgements
or overreactions from the mother thus leading to anger, depression, hating their innocent baby,
low self-esteem and broken relationships with the spouse if the comments were affiliated with
