Running head: ABORTION AND MOLARITY
Abortion and Morality
ABORTION AND MORALITY
Abortion is a procedure carried out to terminate a pregnancy in order to save the life of a
woman or when a woman does not want to give birth out of personal reasons. Pregnancy
termination to save the life of a mother is legally and medically approved. However, it becomes a
controversial issue when a mother wants to carry out an abortion by choice which is termed as
ethically unacceptable (Casuera, 2017). The issue has brought about two conflicting groups where
the pro-abortionists rally behind the acceptance of abortion when a mother wants to as they argue
that a mother has right to choice over a fetus. The others view abortion as unethical behavior. In
this paper, we will reflect on whether abortion is morally acceptable when the pregnancy is not a
threat to the womans life.
An article titled the law and ethics of abortion is a scholarly article by British medical
association that discusses on the legal and medical bases that an abortion can be acceptable from
the law, ethics and medical perspective. It also explains the process and procedures of an abortion
(British Medical Association, 2017). Despite the law and medical ethics of abortion, the article
argues that the society should not be judgmental to a mother when they want to do an abortion on
for other reasons apart from when the pregnancy pause as a physical or mental threat to a mother.
The article gives other reasons why a mother would choose to terminate a pregnancy at will.
According to British Medical Association (2017), some of these reasons are when a woman
discovers the gender of the fetus is different from what she wants. For example, if a fetus sex is
male and the mother wants a female, the article argues that the mother has a right to terminate the
pregnancy. Abortion can also be carried on bases of reducing multi pregnancy as well as when
ABORTION AND MORALITY
deformity in a fetus is detected. However, the British medical association believes and terms it as
illegal to terminate a pregnancy on basis of a mother preference.
The article seems to reason in line with religious perspective where it is believed that once
a fetus is conceived, it is viewed as a whole being and should be treated with dignity and should
enjoy right to life just like any other human being wherein an article titled a social history of
Christian thought on abortion (Casuera, 2017) where abortion is termed as killing which is
religious perspective is immoral. This argument based on biblical views where killing is acting
against Gods will and the sin is punishable. However, the article talks about how the abortion
debate was politicized in the 20th century in Protestant churches and in the 19th century in the
Catholic Church, something that divided Christians to liberals and conservatives (Casuera, 2017).
According to the center for reproductive rights an article titled Safe and Legal Abortion
argues that women have rights to make decisions on their reproductive health without been
discriminated or judged by moral ethics (Cosentino, 2015). Denying women access to abortion
services is considered as discrimination by human right activists. The pro-abortion activists argue
that a woman should have right to access abortion services even on a personal basis such as adult
competent where they have a right to make their own decision on what they want. They also argue
that a woman may lack the capacity to cater for a child due to mind or brain disorders and thus
suggest that abortion should be allowed in such a state. The article also argues that minors should
be allowed to carry out abortions since they do not have ability and capability cater for the needs
of a child and also termed as immature to make their own decisions so the parents have the
obligation to make reproductive decisions on their behalf. Human right activists are thus
ABORTION AND MORALITY
advocating for inclusivity of abortion in public health to be accessible by all which they argue that
it will reduce the rate of unsafe health and the dangers that come with it (Cosentino, 2015).
Abortion topic remains the most controversial debate worldwide where some people
support it and others are against. According to law and religious perspective, life is a fundamental
human right that begins right away from conception thus it gives no one right to decide on whether
the child will be born or not (British Medical Association, 2017). The attempt to carry out an
abortion is thus termed as illegal and is punishable in the court of law. On the other hand, the
women under womens human rights feel that denying women right to abortion is discrimination
to woman basic right since no one should be forced to give birth when they are not ready. They
are also advocating the legal framework on abortion to be changed and life of a human being to be
declared to start after birth (Cosentino, 2015).
