Passage 1
Book 4 line 295-299
Whence true authority in men; though both
Not equal, as their sex not equal seemed;
For contemplation he and valor formed,
For softness she and sweet attractive grace,
He for God only, she for God in him:
Eve is created for Adam, she is sweet and attractive and suppose to see God through Adam.
It shows her dependence on Adam and the hierarchy of the relationship between them.
She was created to be co-dependent with Adam. Therefore, it is her character. She cannot be
alone. She is not wise enough to be alone or think for herself.
Passage 2
Book 4 Line 307- 315
As the vine curls her tendrils, which implied
Subjection, but required with gentle sway,
And by her yielded, by him best received,
Yielded with coy submission, modest pride,
And sweet reluctant amorous delay.
Nor those mysterious parts were then concealed,
Then was not guilty shame, dishonest shame
Of nature’s works, honor dishonorable,
Sin-bred, how have ye troubled all mankind
A hint maybe Eve’s subjection and her yielded by him (Adam?)
Yielded with coy and submission
The start of sin from guilty bodily shame that didn’t exist before
Sin-bred and troubled all mankind. Maybe Eve is the cause of all sins that humans suffer for?
Search all the vocabs and try to relate it with Eve’s character.
You can use the vocabs to help you define certain hidden meanings.
Passage 3
Book 4 Line 447-452
Preeminent by so much odds, while thou
Like consort to thyself canst nowhere find.
That day I oft remember, when from sleep
I first awaked, and found myself reposed
Under a shade on flow’rs, much wond’ring where
And what I was, whence thither brought, and how.
She is sexualized as lying down and always sleeping, as a seductive kind of gesture.
she seems to clueless as to where she is, and wondering.
And how she is here or brought back to awaken. (No free will)
Therefore, she can easily be deceived and is the weaker sex, less intelligent.
Passage 4
Book 4 Line 456-466
I thither went
With unexperienced thought, and laid me down
On the green bank, to look into the clear
Smooth lake, that to me seemed another sky.
As I bent down to look, just opposite,
A shape within the wat’ry gleam appeared
Bending to look on me, I started back,
It started back, but pleased I soon returned
Pleased it returned as soon with answering looks
Of sympathy and love; there I had fixed
Mine eyes till now, and pined with vain desire,
She is vain about her image and likes herself too much. Define vain in multiple meanings.
Another example when she bends down to look into the clear smooth lake and thinks its another
sky. This is a clear indication of her being so naïve and doesn’t know anything about nature. She
could never be alone without Adam’s help. She seems very helpless and lost little girl.
Inexperienced with the world.
Passage 5
Book 4 Line 475-79
Mother of human race. What could I do,
But follow straight, invisibly thus led?
Till I espied thee, fair indeed and tall,
Under a platan, yet methought less fair,
Less winning soft, less amiably mild,
She’s able to sin because of her own actions
Eve prefers her own judgment
God said to latch on Adam, but he is less fair, less soft, less mild. Sounds like she is rebellious,
arrogant a bit?
Step 1:
Rank the passages in order of the importance you see them; providing your reasons in each case.
(i.e. thorugh your topic sentence) for why the passage is important. Make sure order is logical.
Step 2:
Please pick only the best 4 passages that you believe are the best to discuss and analyze/
interpret, and explain the passages of Eve characters as your thesis.
Step 3:
Your argument is therefore something like this “these four passages are the most important in
our understanding of Eve because……..”
Step 4:
Then the rest of the paper is to support through close reading. Extensive and connected
discussion of imagery and links among word choices and among passages, since there should be
something in common for all four passages.
NOTE: you can connect as to how Eve is portrayed by Milton that she could be the first sin for
humanity just like the character Sin who is the progeny of Satan. And how they’re both the only
female characters in the book. Milton might be hinting women are the start of all evil.
Temptation, lure, seduction, etc.
