Emergency Medicine Management of Sickle Cell Disease Complications

Journal Review 3
Currently, in the US, the total number of people suffering from Sickle Cell Disease
account to approximately 100,000. Following the nature of the cells and hemoglobin when
deoxygenated, these patients often suffer from additional conditions which call for immediate
attention from the relevant parties. As a result, various scholars, as well as experts, dedicate their
time today to come up with an emergency medicine that could help in the management of the
disease among the affected population. The failure to administer such drugs and interventions in
most cases end up with fatalities. According to the presented research, SCD may present the
patient with some various other complications which may require the clinical interventions of the
experts as they happen. Some of the recommended interventions in the treatment of SCD include
the administration of thrombolytics to the adults who express sudden ischemic CVA among
others (Simon, Long & Koyfman, 2016).
According to the article, the author suggests that the patients who develop various
complications may experience a varying magnitude and length of pain. As a result, the medical
teams responsible should always keep watch on the changes by their patients so as to administer
just the correct medication. For example, the medical teams should use the available drugs to
offer treatment to the patients who develop acute pain. For instance, the medics may use
analgesia within the first 30 minutes of triage (Yawn et al., 2014). However, each doctor or
physician should consult the others and must arrive at a consensus before administering such
treatment among others such as blood transfusion to the extreme cases (Yazdanbakhsh, Ware &
Noizat-Pirenne, 2012). In addition, before subjecting a patient to any forms of treatment in case of
an emergency, the physicians should first seek to understand the nature of the complication and
the possible impacts. With such an understanding, the doctors may then implement the most

effective solution to the affected patient. On the final note, individuals with SCD may develop a
wide range of complications which may include but not limited to ACS, AHS, acute renal
disease, priapism and also CVA among others. The goal of the physicians focuses on the
management of the pain on the patients and reduce the impacts brought about by the
complications. Detecting the difficulties at an early stage may provide a conducive environment
for their containment. Also, each complication may present a different form of pain from the
others. The same case applies to the manner in which they manifest themselves. The physicians
should take into account the respective attributes of each complication and derive the most
effective mode of intervention. Just like in the various conditions that the patient’s exhibit, the
medical teams must take into account the details of each form of complications to reduce the
chances of misdiagnosis or the failure to implement the desired level of attention early enough.
