Child Maltreatment: Witnessing domestic violence
EDLESON, J.L. (1999). Children’s witnessing of adult domestic violence. Journal of
Interpersonal Violence, 14(8), 839-870. doi:10.1177/08626099014008004
The article focuses on how domestic violence can diminish the moral structure of the family.
This article is essential because I learned that most often the child’s experiences can be a threat
from their father, his manipulation strategy trying to convince the child that his or her mother is
the cause of the dysfunctional activities in the family. The article also elaborates on the
testimony of different parents and emphases on how witnessing domestic violence can cause
the child to be rebellious and continues to participate in crimes.
Anthony, L. (2006, Aug 03). Witnessing domestic violence has a lasting impact on children:
UNICEF report; Daily Gleaner Retrieved from https://search-proquestcom.contentproxy.phoenix.edu/docview/413063268?accountid=134061
This report, based on numbers from the United Nations Secretary General’s Study on Violence
Against Children, found children who witness domestic violence are more likely to be victims of
child abuse. It also mentioned that there are risks to the child’s physical, emotional and social
development and that these children are at a higher risk of becoming perpetrators or victims of
domestic violence later in life.

Blair, F., McFarlane, J., Nava, A., Gilroy, H., & Maddoux, J. (2015). Child witness to domestic
abuse: baseline data analysis for a seven-year prospective study. Pediatric nursing,
41(1), 23.
The authors assert that children who witness the abuse of their mothers are at risk for adverse
behavioral outcomes. It is evident from CDC that over 4.8m women in the United States are
assaulted by their partners annually. These women often have children who witness the
domestic violence. The authors found out that children who see domestic violence have more
negative behavioral outcomes and emotions in comparison to the children who do not witness
domestic violence. Therefore, children who witness domestic violence usually show signs of
anxiety, withdrawal, and depression. Most of the children are aggressive and often break the
rules. Others suffer from attention disorders. Research also indicates that those children are at
risk of becoming victims of abuse and abusers as well.
The article is credible and reliable as evidence from previous studies has shown that most
children that witness violence experience behavioral problems. Besides, the report highlights
how boys who saw the abuse of their mothers, experience adverse effects on behavioral
functioning. The article is also current since it gives statistics from 2015. It is therefore relevant
to the research as it enlightens on the emotional and behavioral impacts of children who
witness domestic violence
On average there are roughly 3 million juveniles that are referred to protective custody. These
children are victims of sexual assault or rape. When a juvenile under the age of 5 years old is a victim of
rape or sexual assault can affect them past their twelfth birthday resulting in emotional and behavioral
issues. Not only do these experiences affect the juvenile emotionally and changes in their behavior, it
affects their school work as well. Studies have found that these traumatic experiences may affect girls in a
more severe way than their male counterparts. No matter the gender, it has been found that when the
change and behavior and sexual assault are occurring within that same timeframe.
When the juvenile experiences sexual assault they may show signs of withdrawal from friends
and family resulting in possible depression. This depression can carry over into their academics as it is
common for these juveniles to miss more school and veering away from normal childhood behavior. This
behavior and lack of emotional response can lead the juvenile down a path of possible substance abuse to
help deal with their emotional issues. Other related factors to sexual assault could be aggressive or hostile
behavior and all these actions can result in the juvenile entering protective custody.

Childhood Physical Maltreatment on Psychological, Behavioral, and Academic Problems in
Adolescence. Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatric, Volume 24(1) pp 80-81
