Assignment 5: Methodology
Identify a methodological approach, appropriate design and measurement for your study. Describe what
your data (primary or secondary) will consist of, how you will go about your study, how you will measure
or observe your variables, identify your independent and dependent variables, why your instrument or
design is best and talk a little about the reliability and validity of your study.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you demonstrate applied learning specific to the discipline of
political science. It will demonstrate your ability to identify, integrate, and synthesize analytical
approaches and applications, and communicate clearly and effectively.
This assignment must include the following elements:
Research design. A design is the complete strategy for your research agenda. This should include the
components of the entire research process. It should talk about the data you plan to collect, the analysis
you plan to use, and basically your overall plan. You should specify whether or not your research will be
qualitative or quantitative. If you need help in this section, refer to your text books.
Measurement of variables. How will the concepts (variables) in the hypotheses be measured or
observed? More specifically, what are the indicators and instruments of the variables? If the variables are
measured with survey questions, your instrument and the specific survey questions should be drafted and
attached as an appendix.
Sampling. Define the study population and sample or thing you are observing. What is the specific
sample or phenomena that will be used or observed? How will the sample, objects, or elements be
selected? Will you use a random sample, simple random, stratified sampling, snowball, convenience, and
so on. Explain how you will gather the artifacts for analysis?
Research Methods. What is the method by which the necessary information will be collected? Is it a
survey, field study, a meta analysis of existing data (secondary data), focus group, content analysis, case
study, in-depth interview, etc?
Plan of Analysis – Explain whether your study is a Quantitative Analysis or Qualitative Analysis.
Talk about how you will gather your data and manage it
Discuss (coding, inputting cases into an application (Excel or SPSS), cleaning your raw data, etc…).
What statistical tools will you use to interpret your variables: (Mode, mean, median, Chi Square, T-Test,
standard deviation, confidence intervals, regression, range, inter-quartile ranges etc…).
Explain Why they are appropriate?
You will also need to describe how you will access, gather and make sense of your qualitative data, e.g.,
your observations and or artifacts. What descriptive statistics will you use on qualitative data?
Lastly, create a 12-week schedule of what you will do each week to ensure you accomplish your research.
This schedule will guide your work as well as provide conversation points with your professor on your
staying on task.
