Debate (April 2, 9): 15%
Assignment Description
Teams are assigned topics (resolutions) and asked to research and prepare for a debate on this issue.
Teams will need to prepare both affirmative (pro) and negative (con) arguments for the issue since neither
team will know which side of the issue they will present on. Affirmative and negative sides will be
determined by a coin flip on the day of the debate.
The persuasive research essay (1,250 words) is your individual part of the research on the debate topic
your team is given. Your essay will form the basis of your argument in the debate, and should reflect an
in-depth analysis. In this essay, you are asked to not only write in order to give your reader information,
but to affect your reader’s thinking on a particular issue (i.e., persuade your reader). In a persuasive essay,
you should anticipate and address the arguments of the other side using facts and logic, without
attempting to argue both sides of the issue.
Assignment Directions
Part 1: Debate (April 2, 9)
Each team member will have 5 minutes to make her/his argument. The debate will open with an
Affirmative (pro) argument, followed by a Negative (con) argument until all team members have
had their turn. One team member from each side will then have a chance to make a 3 minute
rebuttal speech. During the rebuttal speech, debaters may not bring up any new arguments or
new evidence except to directly counter material which has already been presented. The audience
will be asked to decide which side’s arguments were more persuasive.

Part 2: Persuasive Research Essay
1. Locate at least 5 sources (books, articles from scholarly sources either print based or online) for your
paper. Evaluate these sources for relevance and validity.
2. Write the first draft of your essay. Use the guidelines from your text and class notes to help
determine and structure your argument. Think about what strategies of persuasion would best
convince your reader to agree with your way of thinking. Incorporate research to support your
points, remembering to cite all your sources appropriately.
3. Revise your essay based on peer feedback. Submit your final draft (15%) on Blackboard by the start
of class on April 16.
Resolutions
1. Employers should be free to hire temporary foreign workers if it meets their business
needs.
2. Business has a social responsibility to hire workers and be a good corporate citizen, even
if it means immediate, increased staffing costs.
3. Canada is a good global environmental citizen.
4. Toronto needs to and should increase taxes.
5. Businesses should police their employees’ social media activity and discipline employees
whose on-line behaviour is inappropriate.
