Creativity and Happiness
Research Proposal
Research Question
Creativity entails the development of ideas and thoughts that are both new and useful.
The concept of creativity and its role in our overall wellbeing is an important one. The reason
for this is perhaps the highly-controversial debate on whether passion makes us happier in our
work. On the one hand, we have the argument that creative work leads to more satisfaction.
However, there are those who claim it does not. In light of this, it is proposed here that
creativity leads to overall wellbeing or happiness because it is associated with good feelings,
patience, and cultural impact.
Evidence
Creativity is associated with good moods and patience and contributing to the
common good (usefulness or impact). These elements of the creative personality are all
associated with life satisfaction. It has been shown that people are generally happier when
they are creative, perhaps because they do not feel restricted to limited pieces of information
but can think more widely. Creative works or environments also allow us to be more attentive
and see more potential ways of solving creative issues because we completely get immersed
in the work. Creative work often involves contributing to the general welfare of humanity
since it is widely accepted that creative work is a vital aspect of the cultural industry and the
economy.

Context
The expansion of the field of positive psychology has led to increased interest in the
role creativity plays in our overall wellbeing. Many psychologists are now trying to figure out
what exactly we mean by happiness and the role in which creativity plays in it. This scholarly
interest is due to the different views on work and happiness. Creative types, such as writers
and poets and musicians, are seen to be moody. But at the same time, they do work they
enjoy, work that is their passion and contributes meaning to the society. Confucius once
advised that the one who does a job she loves will never work a day in their lives. This calls
for an investigation into the true intersection of creativity and happiness.
Related Issues
Any discussion of the relationship between happiness and creativity will involve
several related issues. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the issue of mental illness will
come up at some point. Ironically, madness is often related to genius in the arts field. It will
be interesting to see the contrast in creativity, happiness, and mental illness. The concept of
passion will also come up as a related issue in the research essay because it is intertwined
with creativity. One can fairly argue that works that involve passion is creative work in most
cases. In the research paper, passion will be used as resulting in happiness because it protects
one from the psychological effects of work such as boredom and anxiety.
Annotated Bibliography
Conner, Tamlin S., Colin G. DeYoung, and Paul J. Silvia. “Everyday creative activity as a
path to flourishing.” The Journal of Positive Psychology 13.2 (2018): 181-189.
This new article seeks to measure the effect that everyday creative habits have
on human wellbeing. The authors are experts in social psychology, conducted a study
in which they evaluated the findings of their study in which they tested a cohort of
Omayrah 3
young adults by having them participate in a 13-day diary experiment. The young
adults tracked the number of hours they spent on creative tasks and how these tasks
affected their daily flourishing. The participants reported they felt higher flourishing
when they engaged in more creative tasks than was usual. The implication of the
study is that it supports my argument that creativity increases positive psychological
functioning.
Fujiwara, Daniel, Paul Dolan, and Ricky Lawton. “Creative occupations and subjective wellbeing.” London: NESTA Conclusions 185 (2015).
The authors are spiralized in this field and have done many studies and
research activities is developing measures of wellbeing and happiness. In this article,
the authors seek to assess, statistically, whether creative work is linked to increased
levels of wellbeing after all the other indicators of wellbeing are controlled for. The
authors use happiness, anxiety, life satisfaction, and worthwhileness as the four
factors to be measured using the U. K’s Annual Population Survey. They find that
most creative jobs result in higher degrees of happiness, worthwhileness, and
satisfaction compared to general employment, though a significant number of creative
jobs also cause higher degrees of anxiety. Overall, once all other measures are
controlled, creative jobs are linked to better wellbeing—an argument that supports my
proposed thesis. The recent article will be helpful to me as it offers the British
perspective on the subject and is an empirical study as well.
Kabanda, Patrick. “Work as Art: Links between Creative Work and Human Development.”
(2016). UNDP Human Development Report Office.
Kabanda’s article states that creative occupations have fostered human
development and happiness for a long time now. In the same vein, human
development and happiness has also enhanced human creativity. However, the author
argues that the relationship between the two is not automatic. Creative work has
Omayrah 4
elements of gender bias and exploitation. While writers can improve human
development, the reality is that illiterate people cannot benefit. In this regard, the
paper is resourceful for my research because it proposes that to increase the role of
creativity in human happiness, we need to engender more output of creative work in
local communities. The paper advocates for more creative work in our societies to
increase human wellbeing. The author is also an authority in his field as he is a
consultant for the World Bank and has written a book called The Creative Wealth of
Nations.
Mainkar, Maya. “Creativity and Mental Illness.” Journal of Psychology 2.2 (2014): 137-146.
This recent article by an author who holds a doctorate in psychology is
published in the respected, peer-reviewed Journal of Psychology. It examines the
veracity of the old myth, which states that genius is linked with madness. This
argument has its origins perhaps in art and literature, where madness is related to
genius. However, the author argues that this notion is anti-life, at least in reality. She
points out that we often the use the terms loosely. In essence, all people desire
happiness and are creative. We can employ our creativity to discover and make great
things, and this creativity is achieved by using the brain wisely. She argues that this
notion is true to the extent that art involves a degree of doing things without control
since art is the depiction of things from a metaphysical point of view and a lot of it is
intuitive. The article is highly relevant in my thesis because it dispels the belief that
anxiety creativity is conditioned on anxiety and mental instability, and that creative
people are unhappy.

Moss, Jennifer. “The Science of Happiness and the Creative Brain.” Forbes, Jun. 5, 2017,
https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescommunicationscouncil/2017/06/05/the-scienceof-happiness-and-the-creative-brain/#4dc586aa37ef. Accessed 26 Mar. 2018.
This recent Forbes article has a refreshing perspective on the debate of
creativity and happiness. Jennifer Moss turns the concept on around. The common
notion is that creativity increases human happiness. But she asks us to consider the
argument that happiness fosters our creativity. The author argues that strengthening
our mental wellbeing can enhance our creativity and performance. Such little daily
acts such as practicing gratitude and exercising can substantially improve our work
performance. The science behind this argument is that anxiety or stress render the
brain inactive in preparation for survival, meaning that creative thinking takes a back
seat. Feelings of happiness and gratitude, conversely, make our brains more creative. I
agree with the author’s contention and it supports my thesis.
