Tableau vivant, or a living picture was an early modern practice of religion and entertainment in which
people recreated paintings and literary or biblical scenes, using their own bodies, props, and stage sets. In
this assignment, you will team up with fellow classmates and to create your own tableau vivant based on an
image discussed in this class (I will provide you with a list of options). You will research your chosen work of
art, create a tableau and perform it either in class or through a photograph, and present your research and
tableau to the class. Students will also write an individual research paper on their chosen work of art.
The project will have the following elements:
1. Preliminary Bibliography with at least 5 entries. Due April 5th. 3% of final grade (Group grade)
2. A Tableau Vivant, either performed in class or photographed. Your tableau should relate as closely as
possible in composition, figure, and lighting to the original work. You are encouraged to be creative with the
setting, props, characters to create a modern, critical response to the work. You may not use Photoshop or
other software to create or alter your tableau. Due May 8th. 10% of final grade (Group grade)
3 Oral Presentation (10-15 minutes) on your chosen work, in which your group provides a critical analysis of
the original work, and present and discuss your tableau. Due May 8th. 7% of final grade (Group grade)
4. Research Paper (6-8 pages) on your chosen work with a bibliography (3-5 entries) and citations. Every
student will write their own paper, though it is expected that your research and thinking about the work will be
strongly informed by the work done by your group. The paper should engage with published scholarship on
your chosen painting and develop an argument about that painting. This paper may be submitted to UMass
Boston as part of the Writing Proficiency Portfolio. Due May 8th.10% of final grade (Individual grade)

5. Reflective Response Questionnaire. I will provide you with a set of questions on which you will reflect on
the assignment and your tableau. Here you will detail and evaluate the specific contributions of each
member of the group, including yourself. Due May 8th with, and included in the grade of, your Research
Paper (Individual grade).
A Note on Group Participation: You will choose your own group, with a minimum of two class members
and no more than five in any group. You may recruit additional people in or outside of the class to appear in
your tableau if you wish. Larger groups will be able, and are expected, to create more complicated tableau.
Everyone is encouraged, but nobody is required, to appear physically in their tableau. However, all group
members must actively participate in its preparation and creation. In addition to appearing in the tableau, you
might participate by:
researching your painting, and presenting your findings to the group;
recommending and/or summarizing readings on the painting to your group;
facilitating communication between the group (setting up a shared Google Doc, scheduling
suggesting ideas for the tableau;
making or acquiring costumes and props;
locating a setting;
creating a stage set for the tableau;
lighting and/or photographing the tableau;
other tasks deemed necessary by the group.
The oral presentation will also require at least one person to present, to write or outline the presentation,
create a powerpoint, etc.
