Prevention of Adult Obesity in America
Final Research Title
Introduction
This research paper addressee the problem of adult obesity in America and shows the way
to prevent adult obesity. Health plays a critical role in the survival of humankind and for centuries
now, people have been plagued by different diseases caused by the environment they live in and
the habits they embrace in everyday life. The diseases impacted humans differently but
summarized under psychological, physiological or emotional impact. The perceptions of health
vary from place to place and are mostly surrounded by weight and height. What people consume
is important in maintaining their health. Eating habits in humans can lead to different lifestyle
diseases which include diabetes, cancer, heart attack, and obesity just to mention a few. However,
obesity can also be caused by natural body changes, especially during growth and development.
The changes are common mostly during puberty, and which is marked by physical, size and shape
changes on the body. During the adolescent period, the changes experienced with both genders
differ highly. It is also critical to understand that most of the challenges associated with obesity
among adults have a high possibility of occurring at this stage. Obesity is slowly becoming an
epidemic across the world and requires immediate attention and action towards preventing it from
growing beyond the rates that have reached. Obesity occurs in both young and old and has negative

effects and changing diseases such as diabetes to strokes and finally heart attacks which may lead
to death. Therefore, it is important to prevent obesity across all nations in the simplest way possible
such as engaging in physical activities and good eating habits.
Background
Obesity is a disease that causes health risks due to excessive increase of body fat, and is
scientifically measured using body mass index (BMI). BMI is measured by obtaining the values
of a person’s weight and dividing it by the square of their height. The result that range from 25 –
30 Kg/m2 is considered overweight, and above range as obese. The national weight of USA has
been on the increase for almost a decade now between the ages of two to nineteen-year-olds but
has leveled off to the people above nineteen years (adults) in recent years. Among symptoms are
too much sweating, brittleness after task and heavy snoring when sleeping, tiredness at all time,
low confidence and self-esteem, inability to keep up with daily physical activities and
continuous, unpredictable back and joint pains. “Excess body weight accounts for a high
proportion of case of hypertension, lowers HDL- cholesterol levels, and increase triglyceride and
LDL-cholesterol levels (Brownell 399).
Obesity occurs when the consumed calories in food are more as compared to the calories
that the person burns. Calories are critical for the sustenance of human life and also provide the
ability to be physically active, however, in order to maintain weight, there has to be a balance
between the energy consumed and the energy used. Energy balance is tipped towards overweight
and obesity when the calories intake is more compared to the calories burnt. There is a change in
the imbalance between calories in and calories out from one person to the next. Factors such as
genes and environment, and many more, play a part in the imbalance difference among people
(Koch et al., 843).

Some of the factors that encourage obesity among adults include; body dissatisfaction,
changes in body composition and physical inactivity. Body dissatisfaction is mainly associated
with the common term body image or image. Body image is an individual’s perception and
subjection of their body weight and shape. Having a bad body image is one of the most common
effects of obesity. However, it is a fact that obesity can be prevented, and also with personal and
medical help cured. Obesity becomes deadly to a human when it goes untreated for a long time
(Koch et al., 840).
Some of the simplest preventive measures that can be taken for the prevention of obesity
include per taking in physical activities, drinking enough water and finally, continuous selfevaluation using BMI to know an individual’s state in relation to obesity. Through early medical
consultation and attention, a person reduces the possibility of experiencing obesity.
Significant of the subject
Adult Obesity is significant to general public and doctors. This study helps you to find
out how to prevent adult Obesity. It will help to minimize obesity and helps to reduce chronic
disease. The main causes for are adult obesity is the food industry, lack of exercise, depression
and sleep deprivation. It is important because Adult obesity become an epidemic in the United
States.

research to produce a more credible and reliable study. This study did not take into consideration
race and gender. However, further study should be done to include to be variable for a stronger
research.
Outcome
There are many barriers to an effective obesity management program identified. At the
physician practice level, a lack of time to address obesity during routine office visits, a lack of
reimbursement, inadequate training and low self-efficacy in handling patients of excess weight
Abdo 5
are some barriers to effective management (Ruth 274). At the patient level, stigmatization, a lack
of financial incentive difficulties in accessing weight management services are identified as
barriers to effective management.
One of the best ways to reach each adult and help prevent adult obesity includes
community-based programs which ensure the availability of healthy foods that are appealing and
also establishing educational programs that provide knowledge on healthy eating habits through
food ingredients (Kass 791). Also, projects can be set up at different food stores that aid in
educating their customers on healthy foods. Furthermore, the requirement of space that allows
for physical activities such as parks. However, the community-based programs should be region
specific, through addressing the specific local are problems and matching them to the resources
available. Success in the plans is achieved through bringing together essential partners with the
available assets and taking an approach that ensures the impact is maximized (Kass 793).
In conclusion, prevention of adult obesity is only possible when individuals,
communities, non-government organizations and the Government work together to implement
effective measures and strategies that can be applied nationwide. Different programs aimed at
preventing obesity in schools, community centers, and health centers will play a vital role in
preventing obesity in the long run. Adult obesity is as a result of poor eating habits during
childhood and teen years, and as a result, the best prevention method for the rising rates of
obesity will require a keen focus during tender ages through programs and strategies
implemented by the community at large in different parts of America. Impact of such programs
would be more significant if carried out in small areas with respect to their problems and needs
when it comes to obesity.
