Medical Errors
Running head: RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Research Proposal
Medical errors have been identified as the primary cause of mortality and morbidity in
most of the healthcare settings in the United States. According to the postulated research studies,
the medical errors, in the United States contribute to about 47,000 to 98,000 deaths. Despite the
increased awareness on the adverse impacts associated with the medical errors, it is imperative to
point out that there is limited expertise on the interventions that can be embraced to reduce the
rate at which medical errors occur in the healthcare settings (Loannidis and Lau, 2001).
Furthermore, people have not obtained a comprehensive understanding of the effect of the
medical mistakes in the delivery of quality care. Therefore, the research will aim to explore the
interventions that can be used in reducing medical errors and the effect of medical errors on the
delivery of quality care.
Research Questions
What interventions can be used to reduce the occurrence of medical errors in the health
care facilities?
What is the impact of medical errors on the delivery of quality care to the patients?
Research Objectives
To examine the interventions that can be used in reducing the occurrence of medical
errors in the health care facilities.
To determine the impact of medical errors on the delivery of quality care to the patients.

Retrieved 20 February 2018, from
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1495210/
The article explores the strategies and interventions that can be embraced in reducing
medical errors in the healthcare facilities. The article further examines the evidence on the
approach that can be used in reducing medical errors. According to the article, simple
interventions can be used in achieving a significant decrease in the medical errors (Loannidis and
Lau, 2001). The article further points out that the severe errors in medication should be given
more attention.

Administration Errors in Hospitals: a Systematic Review of Quantitative and Qualitative
Evidence. Drug Safety, 36(11), 1045-1067. Doi: 10.1007/s40264-013-0090-2
The article explores the factors that contribute to the occurrence of medication errors in
the healthcare facilities. According to the article, error violation provoking conditions and unsafe
acts can result in the occurrence of medication errors (Keers et al, 2013). The article further
claims that in-depth research should be carried out to observe the complex and nature that
contributes to the occurrence of medication errors.
Mehndiratta, S. (2012). Strategies to reduce medication errors in pediatric
ambulatory settings. Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, 58(1), 47-53. doi:10.4103/00223859.93252
The article expounds on the strategies that can be used in reducing medication errors in
the ambulatory settings in the pediatric. According to the researchers, the most efficient way to
understand the rationale behind the occurrence of medication errors is to evaluate the
classification of errors and their etiology (Mehndiratta, 2012).The article further explores that
medical errors can be classified as either rule-based or skill-based error.
The article postulates that the knowledge-based errors can be curbed through enhancing
the knowledge of the physicians. On the contrary, the rule-based errors can be reduced through
improving the rules. The action-based errors can be prevented by offering proper training the
individuals involved in giving medication (Mehndiratta, 2012). The memory-based errors can be
reduced through early detection of the mistakes. Additionally, the use of computers and
information technology can aid in reducing the occurrence of the errors.
