Introduction
This guide describes how to install and use Visual DSSunder the Microsoft
Windows operating systems.
The Microsoft Windows documentation provides information regarding
use of the menus, dialog boxes, keyboard and mouse.
The Visual DSS Reference Manual provides the reference material required for using Visual DSS.
A README file is also be included with the setup files. This file contains
any new or revised material not included in this guide or the Visual DSS
Reference Manual. To view this file go to Help>Readme file.

Chapter 1
PRELIMINARIES
This Chapter covers the preliminary information for installing the system
and working through this guide:

installation under Windows and
conventions
INSTALLATION
Approximately 6 megabytes of disk space is required for installation. The
installation process installs all files into one directory. It creates a Visual
DSS item on the Windows Start/All Programs menu.
To install Visual DSS:
1. Insert the CD into your CD drive.
2. The installation program should commence automatically.
If the program does not install automatically, run setup.exe on the CD
from Windows Explorer.
Online
Reference
Manual
The online version of the Visual DSS Reference Manual can be found on
the Help/Online Manual menu item. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required
to be installed in order to view the manual. This can be obtained as a free
download from:
http://www.adobe.com/
De-installation
Visual DSS and its associated files are all copied to a single directory
during installation. The installation process also creates the Visual DSS
menu folder. No modifications are made to any files on your system.

To de-install Visual DSS:
1. Click on the Start/Control Panel menu item.
2. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
3. Scroll down to Visual DSS and click on Change/Remove.

CONVENTIONS
The conventions used in the presentation of this guide are designed to
help distinguish between the different kinds of material presented.
Courier Font
Courier font is used to represent Visual DSS output and for all information entered into the computer. This includes those parts of syntax
definitions which represent characters that are to be entered exactly as
given. It is also used to represent models or model code fragments.
Where model code fragments are shown indented in the text their leftmost character represents the first character position of the lines.
Models
All models or model fragments are shown indented in the text. The
leftmost portion of the model code represents the first character position
of the lines. The use of:

represents lines of code similar to the preceding code or lines appropriate
for the context.
Chapter 2
USER INTERFACE
This chapter provides an introduction to the Visual DSS interface. After
reading this chapter you will be familiar with:

the basic interface;
the contents of the menus;
entering commands;
displaying the directory tree;
the facilities for printing and
exiting Visual DSS.
THE BASIC INTERFACE
The Visual DSS interface is made up of three windows and a number
of toolbars. The major windows are labelled in figure 2.1 and described
below.
Title bar
The Title bar shows the current directory and the files attached to the
workspace. This directory is where Visual DSS looks for and stores
all files. In figure 2.1, c:tutorial is the current directory and the
attached source file is demo.
When an application window (see page 11) is maximised, the name of
the window is indicated in the Title bar.
Menu bar
The Menu bar groups the Visual DSS commands in a standard Windows
format. Keyboard access is available by pressing the ALT key. You can
scroll across and enter menus using the arrow keys. A menu item can be
selected using the mouse or the ENTER key.

Dialog line
The Dialog line is used to type commands directly at the asterisk prompt.
The buttons on the left are used as you would use ESC and ENTER respectively. A log of the most recent commands can be viewed and re-entered
by clicking on the down arrow on the right hand end.
The swap windows button, on the far right of the Dialog line, enables you
to swap between windows if more than one window is displayed. The
TAB key can be used for the same purpose.
Toolbar
Customised tool buttons are displayed corresponding to the active application window. For example, the Graphics window has a toolbar which
enables you to change the style and features of your chart by selecting
from a set of tool buttons.
Keyboard access to the Toolbar is available by pressing ENTER if you are
in the Dialog line (above it) and no command has been entered, or ESC
if you are in an application window (the windows below the Toolbar).
You can scroll across these buttons using the arrow keys and press ENTER
or the spacebar to make a selection. The button with the keyboard focus
is highlighted. Alternatively you can make a selection by a single mouse

click.
Status bar
The Status bar shows a variety of information dependent on the action
being carried out. For example, if you are selecting a command from the
Menu bar, a brief description of the command will display in the Status
bar.
Application
Windows
Three windows are provided for the presentation of information.

Edit window
View window
Graphics window
If more than one window is displayed, then the button for swapping
between windows is displayed on the Toolbar.
Edit window
The Edit window is displayed whenever you are using the Visual DSS
editor. The editor is opened whenever you are creating or editing a model.
View window
The View window is used to display text output. This includes the model
solution and report.
Graphics
window
The Graphics window is used to display charts and images.
2.2
THE MENUS
Selecting from a menu, in most cases, generates a Visual DSS command
which is then immediately processed. This can be reviewed on the Dialog
line before the input of the next command by pressing ESC .
If an item on the menu is not available, it will be dimmed. For example,
the Run (Macro). . . option is only available if there are macros attached
to the workspace as a result of the processing of a model containing
macros.
File
The File menu contains the items for working with files. You can open
new or existing files, process source files, output to a printer, run macros,
send email, post reports to the web, preview output and exit the system.
You can also specify the locations of the various file types using the
Paths. . . item.
Edit
The menu provides a standard set of editing facilities. A Copy graph
and a Copy cells option enable you to copy a chart and selected cells
respectively. These can then be included in a word processing document.

View
These items allow you to look at different aspects of output. The majority
of the items are related to looking at the report output. Other items display
the solution and any errors which occurred during processing.
Chart
These items are concerned with the production of graphs. The standard
styles are available as well as a range of options to customise their
appearance.
Analysis
Visual DSS offers case analysis, goal seeking, sensitivity analysis, variation analysis and risk analysis. Dialog boxes guide you through the
selections required to carry out these tasks.
Data
These items provide ways of dealing with data in Visual DSS. You can
read data files, update worksheets and save data in various formats for use
by other models or programs. Access to a database is available through
ODBC.
Window
In addition to the ability to arrange and activate the windows, you can
toggle the Dialog line, Toolbar and Status lines to be on or off. The
directory tree can be displayed for easy access to files.
Help
This will take you to the on-line help facility, the on-line Reference
Manual and a set of sample models. Acrobat Reader 3.0 or later must be
installed to view the manual. This can be obtained as a free download
from the internet (http://www.adobe.com).
2.3
ENTERING COMMANDS
Commands can be entered interactively in three ways:

Menus/Dialog
boxes
selection from a menu or dialog boxes;
direct entry by typing the command at the * prompt on the Dialog
line and
clicking on a toolbar button.
Menu items followed by . . . open one or more dialog boxes to facilitate
the selection of commands and arguments. Where appropriate the entry
of a command on the Dialog line without an argument, will open the
dialog box for that command.
The full capabilities of many commands cannot be accessed using dialog
boxes. Entering the command on the Dialog line or including it in the
model (see Chapter 8 on end user systems) allows you to fully specify a
command.

Direct entry
The Dialog line can be used to enter commands directly without using the
menus or dialog boxes. Commands are typed in immediately adjacent
to the asterisk. The first three letters of each command is sufficient for
the command to be recognised. For example see the Graph command
shown in figure 2.2.

The buttons on the Toolbar provide shortcuts to commands. The status
bar provides a brief description of the function of each button as it is
highlighted. For more information on using these commands search the
Visual DSS Help facility for “toolbars”.
The buttons on the far left of the Dialog line can be used as you would
use ESC and ENTER .
The last command executed can be displayed on the Dialog line by
selecting the ESC key. Pressing ENTER will execute the command.
Clicking on the down arrow on the far right will display a log of the most
recent commands entered either on the Dialog line or via a dialog box.
A command generated by selecting arguments from a dialog box can also
be displayed on the Dialog line in the same way.

When the Dialog line is empty, arrow keys scroll the active window if
appropriate.
DISPLAYING THE DIRECTORY TREE
A directory tree of the current working directory can be displayed.
To display the directory tree:
On the Window menu, select Directory Tree.
The directory tree is displayed grouping the files according to their type
(see figure 2.3).
Double click on any of the listed files to view the contents.

PRINTED OUTPUT
The Print. . . option in the File menu enables the production of printed
output.
The main dialog box leads to others for printing and related selections.
The command generated by selection of the various dialog box items will
be either a Print, Type or Plot command depending on the choice made.

EXITING Visual DSS
At the asterisk (*) prompt on the Dialog line type Exit or Quit or from
the File menu select Exit.
Chapter 3
GETTING STARTED
This chapter provides a tutorial style introduction to the basics of modelling with Visual DSS. After working through this chapter you will be
able to:

process a model;
understand how the model is constructed;
vary the layout and format of the output;
use the audit facilities and
use the editor.
STARTUP
If Visual DSS is not already installed, follow the instructions in section 1.1.
To start Visual DSS:
1. On the Startup menu, select the Visual DSS program group.
2. Click on the Visual DSS icon to bring up the program.
The splash screen is displayed for you to choose from a list of options.
We will begin by processing a model called sample.
3.2
PROCESSING A MODEL
A Visual DSS model file contains statements termed source code which
specify the nature of the model in a highly readable form.

To process a model:
1. Select the radio button marked Process an existing model and click
on Yes.
or
On the File menu, select Process. . . .
The Process dialog box is displayed. Only source files (.dss) are
available to be processed. The selections available in the current
working directory are listed.
2. Select sample.dss and the OK button.
This will process the source file called sample which has been set
up as an example.
Report view
The report view of the solution is displayed in the View window when a
model is processed. The report view includes reporting features such as
headings, titles, underlines etc. Rows or columns can also be suppressed
for the report output.
Worksheet view
The worksheet view of the solution represents the solution to all the
equation statements defined in the model. No reporting features are
shown.
To show the worksheet view of the solution:
On the View menu, select Solution.
The solution can be saved for use as data by other models (see section 7.3).
View window

The buttons on the Toolbar provide shortcuts to commands which relate
to viewing the solution. The Status bar provides a brief description of the
function of each button as it is selected. For more information on using
these commands search the Visual DSS Help for “toolbars.”
Model
The source code for the current model can be viewed by opening the
model in the editor.
To show the source code for sample:
1. On the Edit menu, select Edit Model.
The source code for sample is displayed in the Edit window (see
figure 3.1).
2. On the Dialog line, Click on the Swap windows button
to swap between the Edit window and the View window.

To view source code and solution together:
On the Window menu, select Cascade, Tile Vertically or Tile Horizontally.
This will enable you to view the solution and the source file at the
same time.
3.3
UNDERSTANDING THE MODEL
Figure 3.1 shows the source code for sample. Figure 3.2 shows its
report output.

The solution contains four columns — Qtr1, Qtr2, Qtr3 and Qtr4.
These are specified in the Columns section of the model. The Rows
section contains a set of equations which define the relationships between
the rows.
The Volume row:
Volume = 1000;1200;1500;2500
specifies the quarterly volume figures.
The Unit Price row:
Unit Price = 20#3;16
similarly specifies the Unit price figures for each quarter. Note that
the # symbol represents a repetition operator. The first three columns
will have a value of 20.

Multiplication is indicated by * and division by /.
The Overhead row:

specifies that Overhead is 8000 for all columns.

3.4
LAYOUT AND FORMAT
Some aspects of the layout and format of the solution can be modified by
clicking on the Toolbar buttons or interactively on the displayed output.
