Very small fix!

Hi Kishnewt2017You did a great job with this paper (United States should not legalized marijuana essay) but I got small note from my professor. Thesis is working well but save the point about the debate on legalizing weed for later in the paper.Fix intro as stated above and bring that counter argument for later in the paper. You can add evidence to refute the counter argument if you like. Mainly you just want to acknowledge that there are counter arguments to what you say.Could please fix it? Thank you!

United States should not Legalize Marijuana
Introduction
There has been a rapidly shifting landscape concerning whether or not marijuana should
be legalized for medical and recreational purposes in the United States. During the contentious
debates, adverse effects as well as beneficial effects have been cited by the opposing camps. The
people claiming that it should be legalized cite that it is only a harmless pleasure used for
recreational purposes. Contrary to that, marijuana has been proven to bring about adverse health
effects to its users. Some of the negative health effects stemming out from cannabis use include
altered brain development, risk of addiction, memory loss, cognitive impairment, psychosis,

chronic bronchitis and the risk of cancer. United States should not legalize marijuana because it
has negative effects on the brain and the body.
The common method of administration of marijuana into the body is through inhalation.
Smoking any substance always brings about negative and potentially life-threatening effects on
the respiratory health of its users. Lung hyperinflation, increased airway resistance as well as
inflammation of the large airways are associated with regular smoking of marijuana. Chronic
bronchitis is likely to affect the addicted users of cannabis. The increased rates of respiratory
infections in marijuana smokers is likely to compromise the immune and functionality of their
respiratory systems (Volkow, Baler, Compton, & Weiss, 213-214). Vascular conditions that
bring about increased risks of transient ischemic attacks, myocardial infarction and stroke during
marijuana intoxication have also been associated with regular inhalation of marijuana. This is
one reason why the marijuana use should not be legalized the use in the country.
There is an increased risk of addiction stemming out from the long term use of marijuana.
This is a good reason why the use of cannabis should not be legalized in the United States.
“According to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 2.7 million
people 12 years of age and older met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
4th edition [DSM-IV] criteria for dependence on marijuana, and 5.1 million people met the
criteria for dependence on any illicit drug” (Volkow, Baler, Compton, & Weiss, p. 221).
Marijuana withdrawal indicators such as dysphoria, sleeping problems, irritability, anxiety and
hankering confirm the fact that the use of the substance is highly addictive thus making cessation
very difficult as well as contributing to relapse. During adolescence, the brain experiences active
development which leads to a bigger susceptibility to negative long-term effects from cannabis

use by the adolescents. There is an increased risk of experiencing marijuana dependence if one
starts using the substance early and regularly.
Marijuana should not be legalized in the United States because it brings about adverse
effects to brain development. Through the various developmental periods between the prenatal
phases until the end of teenage hood, the brain is usually very active. This young brain is usually
in a state of experience-funneled growth. Negative outcomes of environmental effects for
instance exposure to tetrahydrocannabinol in marijuana is likely to affect a young brain within
these developmental phases than a mature brain (Wadieh, 181-182). People who used cannabis
regularly when they were adolescents have impaired neural connectivity in specific brain parts.
One such region that has been impaired is known as the precuneus which is responsible for
actions that require high degree of integration for instance alertness. Fimbria is another key node
of the hippocampus that has been affected and is responsible for learning and memory.
Subcortical networks, responsible for processing routines and habits has been subjected to
reduced functional connectivity (Filbey et al., 109-110). Decline in IQ in marijuana smokers is
the result of the negative effects on the functional connectivity of the brain. The formation of
synapse during brain development is caused by marijuana according to preclinical findings and
thus these results are consistent with the impairments in brain connectivity brought about by the
exposure to cannabis in adolescence. Memory loss makes it difficult for marijuana users to retain
information as well as learn. There is also an increased risk of mental diseases in people who use
marijuana regularly because it brings about high degrees of anxiety and depression. In people
whose immune has been genetically compromised, marijuana has been linked with psychoses or
schizophrenia.

Another reason why marijuana should not be legalized in the United States is because its
use causes altered judgment in its users thus they are usually not in a good state of mind when
making their decisions which eventually leads to an increased risk of sexual behavior that bring
about sexually transmitted infections or HIV/AIDS (Wadieh, 202). This impaired judgement also
leads to poor motor coordination, interfering with driving skills which eventually leads to an
increased risk of injuries and accidents on the roads.
Conclusion
It is evident that marijuana brings about adverse health effects such as altered brain
development, risk of addiction, memory loss, cognitive impairment, psychosis and chronic
bronchitis to its users. These adverse effects on the citizens’ body and brains outweigh any
benefit that the use of marijuana can bring about and therefore the United States government
should not legalize its use in the country.
