Visual imagery describes the information passing through the brains in the form
of perceptions and in real case nothing is happening. Visual imagery can lead one to
having a sense of touch, smell or sight. Visual imagery is a mental image (Kosslyn &
Pomerantz, 2007). The topic of visual imagery is very important in the field of
neuroscience and psychology. Many people experience visual imagery in the form of
imagination. People can develop scenes inside the mind. An individual can imagine of
an experience at the beach in the form of an imagination. The pictures forming the
imagery are developed in the mind.
Stated in the article is that the “visual imagery plays an important role in the
functioning of the brain, when children are being taught, they use imagination to connect
them with knowledge” (Kosslyn & Pomerantz, 2007). Visual imagery has formed careers
for people who are into creative works such as sculpting, painting and writing.
In the field of psychology, people are advised to use visual imagery to manage
stress. Psychologists guide people by using visualizations and these processes happen
in the mind. Visual imagery is also used in meditations as practiced in religious
traditions by Asians (Marks, 2013). Psychologists use visual imagery to study the
problems of their patients. The patients are asked to visualize and explain what they
can see happening in their minds.
There are people who prefer to learn through pictures while others prefer words.
Visual imagery entails thinking more consciously, factually and conceptually. Use of
words represents abstractions to things that have little resemblance to the used words.
For example the word ‘car’ does not look like the car itself. Words are arranged into
sentences for them to make sense and to pass a message (Marks, 2013). To
communicate verbally, conscious control should be exercised. As compared to visual
imagery, use of words is more concerned with the realistic demands that we have to
Visual imagery is more holistic, emotional, personal and sensory. Our senses are
aroused by the images portrayed in our minds. The images can be perceived by the
eyes but it is the mind that first reacts to the impressions portrayed by the image. The
images arouse our memories and emotions (Mellet, 2000). Children use images to
process their experience before they learn to use words. The human mind works more
through visual imagery than in the use of words. As humans, use of visual imagery and
words works properly when combined though there are people who are better than
others in visualizing and using words and vice versa.
People have chosen careers depending on their ability to use visual imagery and
verbal systems. Those who are good at visual imagery find themselves in the fields of
photography and writing while those with good verbal systems may become news
anchors and presenters. According to research, people who combine visual imagery
and words learn effectively as they can visualize the images and use words to express
what they can visualize (Mellet, 2000). Though images do not have to be expressed
through words for them to be understood, words add a more direct opinion about the
ideas in the image.
