ME 4160 Advanced CAD Project #1 Summer 2018
Vehicle System Modeling
This is an individual project. However, students are encouraged to work with others to obtain correct
engineering dimensional data. This project is to develop technical abilities in modeling real-world engineering
systems. Students will learn to obtain correct measurements and produce engineering sketches on the system
components. Students will develop complete computer-aided design (CAD) models of the parts and assemblies.
Students will generate an engineering drawing package of the complete system. Finally, students will produce
and submit an engineering report of their learning activities for this project.
Each person will develop a complete computer-aided design (CAD) model of the vehicle described in the
following paragraph. Additional credit may be earned for prototype models of your exact design. Emphasis
should be on providing the exact measurements, fits, clearances, proper fastener employment, engineering
material selection, FEA/FEM, structural member development, form-fit-function and operation of the vehicle,
and feasibility of the vehicle. Engineering costs of the final vehicle should be included.
Figure 1. Sample backhoe with a front end loader
Each student is to develop a computer-aided design model of the Wright State University Lake Campus vehicle
located outside of the Trenary Hall building. The project requirements are listed in the next section of this
document. Emphasis should be on producing a fully functional machine system to the exact dimensions of the
model shown in Figure 2.
The tractor parked outside of the Trenary Hall building is shown below. Each student will develop their own
CAD model of this vehicle sub-system.
Figure 2. John Deere tractor with front loader
Students are expected to work individually to complete each task listed below:
1. Produce conceptual sketches of the front end loading sub-system. This includes all hoses, connectors,
and attachment components.
2. Maintain an engineering project log book with every project detail.
3. Obtain the exact dimensions of the front end loading system components.
4. Conduct limited literature review into commercial versions of this vehicle.
5. Develop CAD models for each of the components in the front end loading system. This includes
connections, fasteners, piping, cables, motors, container tanks, and all interface equipment.
6. Note: At this time, no CAD modeling of the tractor unit is required.
7. Produce CAD models of each part.
8. Produce CAD assemblies and sub-assemblies of the system.
9. Produce exploded view CAD assemblies with sufficient routing lines for clarity.
10. Produce a complete engineering drawing package for the complete system. For this project, an estimate
of 40 to 50 engineering drawings is applicable. The student should produce isometric views of
assemblies and sub-assemblies. Multi-view drawings for each part, except common fasteners or
electrical wiring, are required. Detail, section, and other emphasis drawings are required as needed.
Students are expected to determine the necessary drawings for this project through research of industry
standards and discussions with the faculty member.
11. Produce exploded view animations.
12. Produce system modeling animations.
13. Produce limited FEA/FEM on selected structural components. A static analysis is required. Additional
analyses may be performed to validate a successful design.
14. Employ advanced modeling techniques introduced in the course or learned in industrial practices.
15. As a minimum, smart fasteners, advanced mechanical mates, surface to solid techniques, parametric
modeling, structural member development, routing techniques, and smart mating applications should be
evident in the modeling process.
16. Students are expected to provide proper naming for components in their Feature Manager to aide in
understanding during inspection processes by the instructor.
17. Student teams are to submit an engineering report using the format structure below:

c. List of Figures
d. Project Overview and Requirements
e. Report Introduction
f. Literature Review
ii. Numerical Analysis
iii. Part Modeling
iv. Assembly Modeling

18. This project must be completed and submitted by 4 p.m. on 13 June 2018.
1. Complete copy of all electronic files (parts, assemblies, drawings, AVI, report, etc.) in one compressed
ZIP format file.
2. No hard copy of this project is required. All data will be submitted electronically to the Pilot website.
This project is worth 10% of the final course grade. A rubric will be posted to the Pilot website. The copy
below should suffice for preliminary understanding. The grading rubric is shown in Figure 3.
