Academic Analysis Of Literature
Draft Due: May 31st
Conferences: June 1st
Final Due: June 4th
First Essay Assignment â??Thematic Analysis 15%
Argument:
This assignment will allow you to explore a theme in Ogawaâ??s writing. You will identify a
theme and trace that theme in the text, supporting it with ample textual evidence (close
reading of details, passages, and scenes from the book). There will be lots of class time spent
discussing themes and approaches to the textâ??students are actively discouraged from
reading secondary sources about the stories for this assignment.
Theme:
A theme is what a book says about an issue. If â??sexâ? is an issue in the novel, then â??The
novel argues that sexual desire is really a desire for acceptance is a theme. Reasonable
people can disagree with this themeâ??in other words, you have to make your case.
For such a short essay, you will need to pay special attention to narrowing your theme.
â??Family is importantâ? is much too broad and vague a theme. â??Family kinship is more
important in the novel than individual desire is a narrower and more specific theme.
Requirements:
The essay needs to be approximately three to four pages double-spaced, Times New Roman
12 inch font. It will need to correctly cite and/or paraphrase passages from the text in
correct MLA format.
Possible Themes:
The class will come up with a list of possible themes. You will want to choose a topic about
which you are excited, one that intrigues you and that will hold your interest for the weeks
that you work on this essay. Remember that the best essays attempt to answer questions
(what is the novel saying about sex?).
Process:
After choosing a theme that interests you, return to the text. Skim the text with this theme in
mind, marking down relevant passages. Think of what the novel is saying about this theme,
then marshal evidence from the text, and sketch out an essay draft for peer review and
conference. As you revise the essay, think about organization and argument support, be sure
you cite specific details, lines, passages or scenes to support your claims, and be sure you
explain how they support your claims. Remember that revision is not correction, it is a reseeing of your argument and involves content and organization. Finally, edit the essay at the
sentence level for style and grammar. The final version of the essay is due in a folder that
includes two final copies and the first draft with my comments.

Ayaâ??s Mental Status
â??The Diving Poolâ? is one of the unsettling novellas written by Yoko Ogawa, a Japanese
writer. Desire, cruelty, and loneliness are themes demonstrated in the novella that are presented
in a manner that is quite heart touching. The story introduces the reader to a teenage female
narrator called Aya. Aya was the only biological daughter of her mother and father. Her parents
used to run a Christian orphanage that was known as the Light House. Though Aya, the narrator,
lived with her family, she felt neglected and not loved, and this is demonstrated throughout the
novella by the violence towards the orphans.
Despite being their biological daughter, Ayaâ??s parents treated her just like the other kids
at the orphanage. This kind of treatment frustrated her and made her not to feel at home in the
presence of her parents as well as the other orphans (Ogawa 12). The only time when Aya found
comfort was when she sneaked after school to watch one of the orphans from the Light House who
was at her age, Jun, at the swimming pool. June used to do some practice with his diving team.
Aya felt obsessed by Junâ??s body. It looked sturdy and young. However, despite her desire, she
could not get any intimate connection with June simply because she was considered her brother.
She could not help but watch.
There is a remarkable flashback at the beginning of the story (Aya calls this her old
memory). In this flashback, Aya carries Jun in her laps and feeds him the â??opalescence liquid
oozeâ? that was dripping from the broken branch of a fig tree â??like a baby at the breast.â? (Ogawa
Alghamdi 2
10). In this story, the writer presents a different view of the female towards the male. There is
desire, but a wide rift still exists which is seen as separation and helplessness. This also added to
the kind of frustrations that Aya was going through. In an attempt to cover up her loneliness, Aya
develops an obsessive routine in which she secretly watches her foster brother dive at the
swimming pool with his team. Aya feels neither sympathy nor empathy from those she deserved
to get them from. This made her cruel to both the young and the large ones. Her deformation
stemmed from the kind of loneliness that affected her life.
In an attempt to escape her frustrations, she thinks of something that could relieve her from
it. She picks at her foster sister, Rie. In extensively cruel ways, Aya abuses this toddler. She was
meant to take care of this toddler as she was a person who they depended on, but she kept hiding
from her. She also traps her in an urn until she sobs herself up. Aya also made Rie feed on spoiled
food which had severe consequences on her body. Aya says, â??I wanted to savor every one of Rieâ??s
tears,. to run my tongue over the damp, festering, vulnerable places in her heart and open the
wounds even wider (Ogawa 26). Ogawa points out that anybody is capable of developing some
unreasonable cruelty when they feel low or disturbed. Aya states that â??my desires seemed simple
and complicated at the same time; to gaze at Junâ??s wet body and to make Rie cry.â? (Ogawa 4950). The writer also points out that the fact that Aya lost herself in cruelty and obsession indicated
just how much she had been washed down by loneliness.
All human beings usually strive to get at least some attention from those around them. This
attention is some comfort, and it helps in the social and mental development of individuals. Young
minds specifically need this kind of attention. When everybody around them fails to care or ignore
them, they tend to come up with escape mechanisms to survive the situations. As in Ayaâ??s
Alghamdi 3
situation, she needed to be loved, but she did not get it neither from her biological parents nor Jun,
the boy she loves. As a result, she developed the feeling of being neglected.
Neglect consequently results in loneliness which can consume up a person and alter their
personality. It can be a mental disorder altogether. Frequently, a little abandonment or loneliness
occurs in some little cruelty which might last for just a little while. If the cruelty or some obsessive
behavior continues for a rather long time, it is possible to conclude that a mental lapse has finally
set in. Additionally, metal disorders commonly present in the form of obsessions. Aya was
possessed of two main things; she only wanted to watch the wet body of her foster brother and felt
the pain and tears of her foster sister Rie. These were the only sources of comfort that she had in
her life. Whenever she felt low or when the loneliness crept in, these two were the sources in which
she can feel the healing.
It is strange how the narrator uses these external means to relieve her loneliness. Her being
possessed with Junâ??s body can also be attributed to her isolation. She was developing sexual
feelings towards June which could not be satisfied in any way available due to the kind of
relationship between them. There was no way she could express her feelings to Jun, so she resolved
into a secret watching. Regardless her need of having a small and quite family, she thinks that
Junâ??s love would replace her feelings about her family. Aya simply needed some kind of love that
she could not reach in the people around her.
Loneliness makes people to cling on to whatever they find around them to get solace. Love
makes an individual to have a sense of belonging. It creates a human bond between people and
their environment through development of quality and peaceful relationships with others. Love
also makes an individual to be much caring about the welfare of those around them. In the absence
of love, loneliness creeps in and consumes the human part making a person to act inhumanly or in
Alghamdi 4
a socially unacceptable way. Aya was obsessed with such unreasonable thoughts that made her
neglect her duty of taking care of Rie. She did not care of her being a toddler. The poor little kid
went through severe suffering in the hands of Aya. Maybe this was a way of drawing the attention
of her parents towards her. She wanted those around her to notice her presence.
In conclusion, the narrator presents the neglect that she experienced throughout the story.
She felt unloved and could not find a better way of finding relief or developing a sense of
belonging. She started having certain obsessions such as secretly admiring Junâ??s body and making
her foster sister cry herself up. On top of that, Aya could not manage her feelings between having
a settled family and loving Jun, she, at some points, was contradicting her feelings.
