Business Intelligence Justification
Introduction
Chesterâ??s Inc. is a medium sized retailer company operating in an increasingly competitive
market. This company deals with a variety of merchandise but has been facing a challenging time
in expanding into the market due to the growing competition itâ??s been experiencing. The
management of the company has however expressed interest of venturing into different markets
and attracting more customers to their enterprise. The company has also recently adopted a new
centralized information management system which is projected to help the company in improving
decision making as it take advantage of its data.
Decision making problems that currently exist in the organization
Currently, the organization has been experiencing a number of challenges related to its
decision making process. These include; deciding on the most suitable strategy to resort to in
marketing their business and their products. The presence of different strategies causesâ?? confusion
for the business as it seeks to come up with the most suitable approach.
The organization has also been facing the challenges in deciding what products to stock
and keeping track of its inventory. This has manifested itself in customers seeking products from
the shop and the company realizing that the stock ran out and they donâ??t have any at hand.
The organization has been having a challenge utilizing the data gathered to make decisions
on various issues related to the business. This is because the information is too much and cannot
be readily synthesized.

Knowing who the specific target of the business is and the segment driving the revenue of
the business has been a challenge. This has affected the decision-making process since the
organization does not know which products or segments to prioritize.
The company has been experiencing challenges in making decision which have achieved
success in building in building the brand and giving it a competitive edge. Coming up with the
right strategies has been a challenge and it has therefore lagged behind its competitors
The company also faces challenges in coming up with strategies which best meet the needs
of the consumers and anticipate their future needs. This has especially been rampart in the current
changing market environment where everything is changing so drastically.
Typical organizational response to problems using the business pressure-responses-support
model
Generally when the organization wants to determine the most suitable marketing strategy,
the company has often resorted to intuition and gut feelings. The leadership in the marketing teams
would scan around, see the most popular platforms that are being used and through conviction and
gut feeling decide on the platform they want to pursue.
When the organization faces a challenge with their stock and they realize that it has ran
out, the management resorts to making orders to the suppliers for the products which are missing
or out of stock. This process becomes costly and unscheduled.
Typically when organization fail to utilize the data gathered in decision making, they resort
to their gut feeling and unsubstantiated information to make decision regarding various issues such
as the products to produce, segments to target, strategies to adopt in marketing their business and
meeting the needs of their customers.

Quantitative and qualitative impact of the organizational response problems on managerial
decision making
When organizations wants to make a decision on the marketing strategy that they will
adopt to market their product, they have generally relied on crude mechanisms which such as
intuition and gut feeling. This process has however had quantitative effects on the organization in
terms of finances because; the company is often unable to get its return on investment (Schmidt,
2016). This affects the organization negatively because it leads to a financial loss.
The challenge of stock tracking within the organization and the decision to make
impromptu orders once the sock runs out within an organization affects it both qualitatively and
quantitatively. Qualitatively, the organization losses its reliability to customers as the place where
they can get whatever product they want, while quantitatively, the process affects the finances of
the organization because of the unnecessary transactions which are incurred in unscheduled
transportation
Lack of proper utility of the data gathered by the organization, has affected the
organizationâ??s decision making since they donâ??t know their clients well, their needs, drive and so
forth and therefore they are unable to come up with products which suit their customersâ?? needs
perfectly. They fail in building the organizationâ??s brand, and experience a dip in their revenues
since they lack insight on the areas to exploit.
How business intelligence can be used to support problem solving and decision support in
the case study organization
The business can employ business intelligence to determine the most effective marketing
strategy by analyzing the return on investment it is getting from the marketing strategy (Schmidt,

2016). This is essential because the current market is saturated with a lot of marketing platforms
and strategies and therefore organizations need proper mechanism to decide which strategy of the
ones they have invested in is bearing fruit and giving back returns. Through business analytics
reports which are products of business intelligence, an organization rely on solid research results
to make their decisions instead of other crude mechanisms such as their gut feeling, intuition and
so forth.
Business intelligence can be employed by the organization to track their inventory and
ensure that the organization is keen on capitalizing on trends (Schmidt, 2016). Through this
technology, the organization can know where and how much inventory they have and the rate at
which it is selling. The company can therefore be able to identify the trends in the marketing in
terms of buying and ensure that they stock the products the customers are demanding for.
Business intelligence can be employed by the company to derive knowledge that will help
the company to get a competitive advantage from the sea of data they have (Holley, 2015). With
the numerous data generated by in organizations, it hard for them to effectively use it without a
special tool enabling them to analyze it and produce meaningful results. BI therefore comes in and
helps organization to generate meaningful information from the myriad of data that the
organization has which is used in the decision making process. Through this process the
organization can gain an advantage by understanding the market dynamics and the needs of their
customer. In deriving this knowledge, BI helps the organization improve their performance, deliver
customer promises ad build long term relationships.
Organizations can employ BI to determine and understand what drives revenue for their
business. This information can help the organization in their decision making helping them to

decide who to target with their product and the end characteristics of the end user. This information
helps the organization to know the factors that influence their decisions and so forth so that they
can exploit them maximally (Al-ma’aitah, 2013).
Business intelligence can help the organization to build the brand of the organization to
competitive levels even in the retail environment they operate in which is complex. This is
achieved through providing marketers with information which they use in their decision making
process helping them to plan and respond more effectively and efficiently. Through business
intelligence, the organization is able to gain insight into creative ways which they can employ to
grow their business
Organizations can also use business intelligence to understand why customers are behaving
in certain ways and the factors which inform their consumer behavior. Business intelligence helps
organizations to add qualitative information to the quantitative information they have providing
insight as to why things are the way they are (Al-ma’aitah, 2013). Through this information,
organizations are able to make decisions informed by real information rather than relying on their
gut feeling
