Develop a list of at least ten interview questions to ask your IT leadership professional.
1. “Tell me about the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the past six months.”
Putting my Dog to sleep. I had the Dog for 13 years, he wasnâ??t terminal but he was
hurting and I knew he was suffering.
2. “Tell me about a major mistake you made, and what you did to correct it.â?
I think the worst mistake I ever made at work was in my first ever job â?? five years ago
now. A more senior member of the team seemed to take an instant dislike to me from
the start â?? and one day she was particularly unpleasant to me in front of several
colleagues. Later on, I was talking to one of those colleagues who was, I thought,
attempting to console me. Angry and hurt, I foolishly vented my feelings and told her
what I thought of the lady in question. I was naturally shocked to find out that she went
on to tell everyone what I had said and this certainly didnâ??t help my relationship with the
team member who was causing me problems. Rather than let the situation carry on, I
chose to have a quiet word with this lady so as to find out what her problem was with me
and to see if we could put it behind us. It turned out it was nothing personal; she just
resented the fact that a friend of hers had also been interviewed for my position and had
been turned down. Once we had got matters out into the air, her behaviour changed and
we actually got on quite well after that. However, I certainly learned a lot from the
experience. I learned that careful communication is vital in managing interpersonal
relationships and that if I have a problem with someone itâ??s always best to talk it over
with them rather than with someone else.
3. “Tell me about the last time a customer or co-worker got upset with you.”
At my last job, a customer came in cursing and yelling-the works. I knew it was out of frustration
so I didn’t take it personally and I made sure the customer knew their concerns were being heard.
I listened carefully and apologized. She was complaining about an item she wanted to return,
however she didn’t have her receipt. I explained that I wasn’t able to give her a cash refund
without the receipt, but that I could allow her to have the same amount in store credit. It ended up
being a win-win situation for everyone.”
4. “Tell me about a time you knew you were right, but still had to follow directions or
My last company had very strict processes with tight timelines and schedules. I knew
that wavering a bit off the timeline would create a better product for the customer but had
to follow protocol.
5. “Tell me about the last time your workday ended before you were able to get everything
Frequently, My day ends before my tasks are completed. I am very comfortable working
on projects from home in the evening if the company allows that.
6. “Tell me about a time you needed to motivate a co-worker.”
Recently, a co-worker was passed up for a well- deserved promotion due to a company
re-organization and not skillset. His spirit was crushed. I reminded him how much of an
impact he has in his current role and how the re-organization could possibly produce
even better or more opportunities.
7. “Tell me about a time you had to raise an uncomfortable issue with your boss.”
I once disagreed with my boss over how to best help a customer. Rather than question
his authority in front of everyone, I talked to him off of the floor. I was open and honest
about the problems I had with the way he wanted to do things. It turned out that there
was just a simple misunderstanding. That disagreement we had showed me the
importance of communicating with my coworkers to make sure that something obsolete
doesnâ??t become a bigger problem than it needs to be.
8. “Tell me about a goal you achieved.”
The greatest goal I set was to graduate University as an honors student while still
working full time in a related field. I was top of my class, and working full time. Reaching
this goal showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career, and reach the goals that I
set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and be recognized for my dedication
9. “Tell me about a goal you failed to achieve.”
I had hoped to dual major in college but the workload was too much so I had to commit
to one major.
10. â??Tell me about a personal goal that you hope to achieve in the next 5 yearsâ?
My goal right now is to find a position at a company where I can grow and take on new
challenges over time. Ultimately, Iâ??d like to assume more management responsibilities
and get involved in product strategy. But most importantly, I want to work for an
organization where I can build a career.
