EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA
2
Social media enables the spread of unreliable and false information
It is interesting to note how people spread unreliable and false information without their
knowledge in the social media. Such people re-post information without seeking authentication
about their origin. By the time they realize the data was false, a lot of damage has already taken
place. Understanding of the effects of social media regarding the spread of unreliable and false
information is necessary for understanding how it affects the society negatively. By believing
this view, I would notice the negative effects the social media has on the people. I would also
believe that social media create an environment which can affect relationships and the spread of
malicious information. It is clear the use of social media has increased the spread of false and
unreliable information as sharing of information is done faster. There is no doubt that social
media enables the increase of untrustworthy and false information. Most people share data which
they have not confirmed its source, at many times, they find out the information they shared was
false. A group with ill motives can spread information to many people who do not have adequate
information about the subject. A good example is the last U.S election where different groups
spread false information about the two candidates without the knowledge of its followers. Such
information could have destroyed the reputation of one candidate.
Social media users are vulnerable to security attacks such as hacking, identity theft, and
viruses
It is interesting to see how social media has made people more prone to hacking, identity thefts,
and viruses. With the information which people provide in social media, attackers can use them
to launch attacks thus gaining access to their personal information. On the positive side, it can be
helpful for the people to adopt security measures to secure their personal information on social

media. They can become more careful about what they share and the information they use. To
secure their information, social media users can also enhance the use of other security measures
to protect their information. By believing this premise, I would notice that people are more prone
to attacks than I thought. The official names, dates of birth, pet names, and the phone number
people share makes them prone to attacks. Such information can be used to crack their passwords
giving the attackers access to personal information which may lead to identity theft, and loss of
personal savings. This idea is true because many people have fallen victims of such attacks. They
post information which might affect the personâ??s reputation or use the information for their
financial gains.
Social media harms employeesâ?? productivity
It is interesting to see how employees are using social media at work instead of dedicating their
efforts at enhancing their productivity. People with social media accounts like Facebook,
Twitter, and Instagram cannot go a day without viewing their accounts during the working hours.
The employers can consider this factor to adopt measures to control this condition. Believing this
premise would make me understand the financial losses which might be caused by social media
in the workplace. In the current technological world, social media has negative effects on the
employers who their employee use it in the work. This is because the employee will waste some
time every day accessing social media thus causing delays and destructions when performing
duties. The research conducted by Pew Research Center confirmed that 56% of workers feel that
social media distracts them when they are performing their duties. As long as the employee is
using social media in the workplace, jobs will be delayed and the quality will also be affected.
